Engineering for girl (with very high grades)

Dd has heart set on applying to Cambridge (I know, I know, she is doing this all wrong). But she’s going to apply there, end of discussion, she says! With her exam performance and other activities throughout school so far, she has a good shot at it. It will be her firm, as it stands atm.

My question is, where else can she apply that will be both prestigious and really interesting? I gather she needs an MENg to be properly qualified, but I don’t know. She is maybe interested in Bioengineering in the longer term, and quite keen on something like a stint abroad or at least a placement, as part of the course.

I don’t want her to end up like her sister, with three offers but all for the same (high) grades. Sis was set on a super demanding subject, or nothing (in the end she got the grades but it was super stressful waiting for results and not knowing where she was going until 2 weeks before). I want dd2 to have a proper insurance, with actual lower offer grades in the event of dropping a grade, where she won’t be too sad about getting second choice.

Not keen on London, we live there and she wants to leave home for uni.

TIA

Maryso - I wasn’t taking issue with your opinion on Manchester. I actually recommended the university in the first place! I just said that I hadn’t heard much about the place lately. I never said anything about the quality of the courses. I reiterate that I said you were cynical not for your opinions on universities but because you suggested my post was intended to dissuade people from applying to Manchester implying that I was trying to gain an advantage for my DC. This was not the case and I wanted to ensure that was recorded on here. I suggest that we now stop this conversation as we are diverting attention away from the original ask of the post.

Dancingdreamer, your version of stopping is to reiterate your mistaken personalisation of my post. I reiterate that you are personalising my comment which is of course your choice as to how you engage with the world. If labelling me as cynical somehow validates your post, I can see that you must do as you need to get by. Stop by all means but pretending to yourself that my actions or opinions can possibly be affected by your suggestions is pure cloud cuckoo land.

EcclesthPeacock - Geography is probably the most important subject of our time.

It’s workable solutions to the problems identified that are most important. Often, that’s Engineering solutions.

Eccles: we agree again. The Engineering Institutions have been woeful in promoting the professional status of engineers. In Germany there is an understanding and recognition of professional status.

We also have Incorporated Engineers which has diluted the status. We wouldn’t use the term Doctor of Medicine loosely. We all know it means years of study, experience and qualifications. There is not a half way house Doctor but with Engineers there is so the public are confused. If the higher qualified had a title indicating this, it would help.
