Master’s Grades

I started my Master’s (distance learning) a few months ago. Just had my second assignment back and got 67. I got the same for the first one, so that completes this module.

Is 67 ok? I mean, I know it’s a pass, but I am beating myself up as I want to do really well. I passed my UG degree in 2006 with a 2:2 but I didn’t try my best there and I’m still ashamed of it now.

67 is great for a first module! Its the one where you figure out what your lecturers expect of you.

Is your masters graded? Mine were pass, fail or distinction. Pass was 50-70% and distinctions were rare. Since nobody every asks the grade for a masters it will matter to nobody other than you and as long as you've tried your best it doesn't much matter which side if an arbitrary line your grades fall.

I got a distinction for my first masters. I was single living in a great city, broke and spent all my time in the library. For my second masters I got a pass but I was working full time and by the time I got to my dissertation I just wanted it to be over. I'm more proud of the juggling that went into the second one to be honest and I regret not enjoying city life the first time around!
There's nothing wrong with a 2:2 either!

My master’s is graded, so this mark is a merit. 70 is a distinction.

I’m always so hard on myself and feel like I’m never good enough. Keep thinking I will have to try harder, but don’t know if I can! (As I already do).

Hi OP, if distinctions start at 70 then 67 is very good. One thing to remember is that the grading for M-level work is (or certainly should be) harder than for undergrad work. So, as I always tell my students, if you get a mark in the high 60s then this would be a 1st at undergrad.

67 is great for a first module but I agree with Jessicabrassica - once you have a masters no one asks you what % you got they are just impressed you got it.
You are a superwoman if you are doing it while working and having children. It’s hard going (speaking from experience) but you’ll be so proud in the end regardless of the grade

Merit for your first two modules is great! I was told it’s about upward trajectory when I was on my masters course. Be careful you might get hooked on studying- I did and I’m now a year into a PhD :-)

People do ask what you got for your Masters, depending what you want to do afterwards. If you're looking to go on to further study, it will matter - broadly speaking, you want a distinction to have a chance at funding.

Your marks are fine - but I'm envious that you have received them so early. I recall not receiving my first term MA marks until the end of the year - thus spending months convinced I'd failed.

(My Distinction does matter - a bit!)
