Following on from the previous thread.

That's a good offer for your DS, Itscoldoutthere. Yes, or maybe he is one of their very strong candidates and they want to entice him to firm Reading?

Newmodel Well he’s not that strong really, he’s retaking, he already has ACD and has applied with a conservative prediction of ABC.
We really liked Reading and it now means he can consider it as an insurance, but I’m surprised by their low offer, although we did have a good chat with them on offers day, so maybe that helped.
Still waiting for Bath which is frustrating !

Itscoldouthere · 12/03/2019 16:05

piggy not sure if you are referring to the Reading offer, or Dans so going without a coat Grin

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2019 16:21

LOL, Reading offer!

Itscoldouthere · 12/03/2019 16:22

Actually he’s just told me he’s got another email and it’s a contextual offer. Makes more sense now.

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2019 16:26

This is exactly the same situation!

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2019 16:26

Not the coat.. the offer...

You'd think they would have sorted out their contextual offers at point of original offer?

Itscoldouthere · 12/03/2019 16:37

Yes it’s very interesting Piggy no one else has given him a contextual offer.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/03/2019 16:52

It's a bit rubbish if they're not giving contextual offers from the off...

Itscoldouthere · 12/03/2019 16:57

Does each uni have their own list for contextual offers then? I didn’t know DS would be eligible till today, he has an ASD which he declared on his application form, but it’s not been mentioned by any uni till today.
They included a list of contextual catogories on the email and disability seemed to be the only one that could apply to him Confused

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2019 17:15

Well, I do know my DS's (and therefore his friend's) school is on various contextual lists . It may be Reading has widened their context. So , DS was contextual for Aber, Swansea , Reading (he only applied to one of these mind) to pick three but not for other places which I ahve now forgotten (Bristol, I think). So, yes, I would imagine universities occasionally look again at what their contexts might be.

I think Reading may soemtimes go under the radar : really good uni but not 'famous' and not in a glamorous (or cheap!) location : so it may be they work harder on recruitment.

Itscoldouthere · 12/03/2019 17:35

Thanks Piggy that’s interesting to know as it’s not something I even thought to look at, as we really try not to focus on his ASD and don’t really see it as a disability, it’s just a quirky and lovely part of who he is Smile

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2019 17:37

All round, it's a good thing, though. If he wants to go there?

Itscoldouthere · 12/03/2019 17:51

This may explain why we haven’t heard from Bath yet, as looking at their contextual information, it looks like DS would fit the criteria to be considered by their ‘Admissions Progression Team’
Very interesting and gives us hope that he may get an offer (he’s very keen on the course content at Bath).

Itscoldouthere · 12/03/2019 17:53

piggy oh yes all good, lower grade offers will help with the overall stress of exams for DS.

Fazackerley · 12/03/2019 19:28

I don't think dd will fit the contextual offers scheme and we haven't heard from bath either! I think she wants to firm Swansea as they've given her a very good offer and she really liked it there!

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2019 19:44

Phoned Lincoln and Hull today who do still have some decent accommodation left ('at least for the next 10 minutes' said one ominously! Go to love the internet and online booking!) so all is not lost until DH chokes on £5900 accommodation fees

Shimy · 12/03/2019 21:12

I want to make a note of the Unis with stupidly long offer times because I’m going to go through this again with DS2 in a few yrs:

Bath
Durham
Anywhere else?

TapasForTwo · 12/03/2019 21:23

Edinburgh
Manchester in DD's case

BringOnTheScience · 12/03/2019 21:27

Still waiting for Manchester here too. Interview was >2 weeks ago.

Piggywaspushed · 12/03/2019 21:29

Warwick was mentioned on another thread. Not surprising , I guess. All of them ave high volume of applications form very accomplished young people with very similar grade profiles, I expect.

RecentlyDeLurked · 12/03/2019 21:29

I think Exeter can be quite late (based on previous years)

Danglingmod · 12/03/2019 21:31

St Andrews as well, I think.

Shimy · 12/03/2019 22:05

Thanks all Smile.

Shimy · 12/03/2019 22:14

Just to crack you all up a bit, at recent Cardiff visit, i got chatting to a lovely lady, and she happened to mention her visit to Durham. During the 'talk', she tentatively asked about Clearing.
A silent gasp went through the room, the speaker/lecturer gave a long pause then looked at her slowly and answered, 'We don't do Clearing here!'.

Poor woman died a thousand deaths 😂.
