And I didn't have cleaning in my uni accommodation back in the day (house, not halls, but uni owned)!

Piggywaspushed · 23/02/2019 20:51

I can't properly remember but I know the boys left their bin outside the door so the cleaner didn't wake them up so we must have done. I would have thought that there might be some sort of hygiene /H and S regs about cleaning shared bathrooms in accommodations.

LIZS · 23/02/2019 21:02

Ds didn't get his ensuite room cleaning except communal kitchen and stairs weekly but not when they'd left it in a mess or post party condition

Piggywaspushed · 23/02/2019 21:17

I know en suites aren't cleaned (we didn't have those in my day!!) ...was wondering about shared bathrooms. At Lincoln today, nothing is cleaned at all.

MarchingFrogs · 23/02/2019 21:31

The accommodation info for each university should explain the details, but in general, 51 week lets are for postgraduate students and those doing e.g. Nursing, where placements take place over the long vacation. 40ish weeks will normally run to the end of the summer term and include the Christmas and Easter holidays (x-posting with LIZS, went off to eat dinner after starting post).

Shorter lets will probably involve vacating the room at Christmas and / or Easter. Not all universities will be able to offer storage over those periods, so everything will have to come home and go back again (or the student hire a small storage unot, or use one of the companies which will collect, store and bring back their belongings).

Frankly, I was happy not to have multiple 330 mile round trips when DS1 was in halls in first year and the use of the room out of term time meant he could stay on to work / socialise; the extra time in the summer meant that he could move his stuff into his second year house gradually.

Piggywaspushed · 23/02/2019 21:38

Yeah, that's my thinking marching!

justasking111 · 23/02/2019 22:29

Imagine having to be a cleaner in those halls. I certainly would not have the stomach for it. I was advised by a teacher whose five children have gone through uni. to meet them in a pub/restaurant and not to go back to their halls Grin

VanCleefArpels · 23/02/2019 22:59

On the Halls contract, my DS paid extra at Nottingham so he didn’t have to vacate his room at Xmas and Easter. There were only a limited number of rooms in each Hall that could do that IIRC so they need to be on the ball but it was the best £150 spent!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2019 01:04

DDs room last year had a lockable cupboard (the shelved half of a wardrobe) which she could leave quite a lot of stuff in at Xmas and Easter, and also didn't have to clear the kitchen equipment - conference people didn't need those. Exactly the same arrangement as when I was in halls elsewhere (oh blimey) 40 years ago.

Very interesting day at Reading yesterday, it’s much nicer than I expected, nice campus, good facilities, good accommodation.
DS has a dilemma though as they offered him lower grades if firmed, but same grade as Birmingham if not. On paper Birmingham is a better university but if he puts that as his firm he will have to rule out Reading altogether as there’s no point in putting insurance with the same grades!
He’s going to have to really study the course units so he can make the decision, but I know he’s finding it hard, I don’t know what to think as have no direct experience of either ! Any opinions welcome....

Shimy · 24/02/2019 10:56

Itscold - Glad you had a nice day at Reading. I don’t think having the same offer for firm and insurance is that unusual. DS is in exactly the same situation. You just have to be a bit Tactical in your choices. Which one is more likely to be flexible with grades? Which one has a history of going into Clearing? (Last yr Birmingham was only in Clearing for one very random course if I remember correctly).

Piggywaspushed · 24/02/2019 11:04

We have a similar issue really in that all his offers are bascially the same , apart from his UiF from Lincoln. If he firms another uni, Lincoln becomes the same as all the others, give or take one grade. It feels like it is too hard to decide! He was thinking about accepting Lincoln's UiF in the car yesterday after the day at Lincoln but that was really vis a vis not having to revise!! Lincoln seemed a pleasant enough uni, but not actually very well organised or welcoming compared to others at Open or Offer Days. Reminded me of Huddersfield , campus wise . None of the buildings quite had the wow factor of the ones at NTU, Hull or OBU . The accommodation was nice, perfectly acceptable but almost too many different halls to be able to make a decision. We looked at 4, and there were at least another 6 or 7. Hull wins hands down on accommodation , assuming he'd get the on campus stuff but their accommodation has already been open a few weeks and Hull is his highest offer.

In terms of Reading vs Birmingham, I always feel like Reading flies under the radar, perhaps because the place itself doesn't have particular appeal to anyone (sorry Reading!). This often groups it with places like Keele (probably a bad example but it is the best I could come up with!), which really have to appeal on the quality of their courses, rather than their location. Birmingham is very popular : I would say it has recently overtaken Sheffield and Nottingham for more able students at my school in terms of popularity. My DS's friend is desperate to go to Reading : he was very impressed at Open Day, or so I hear from his mum! I do think (as the man at Lincoln said to us yesterday) weighing up the different modules is the best way of deciding.

Perhaps read out module titles to your DC without saying which uni they come from? That's how DS and I picked his UCAS choices.

Piggywaspushed · 24/02/2019 11:05

shimy , how would you find those things out?

Itscoldouthere · 24/02/2019 11:13

Thanks Shimy that’s interesting, I did ask at Reading if they had places in clearing last year and they said yes but they only have 60 places on his course where as Birmingham is much bigger more like 120. I
Don’t know if they had clearing places or not.
I think Reading might offer lower if he missed the grades, but don’t think Birmingham would. I suppose I just worry because he could fail again as he’s retaking and not at school, so I don’t really have a very good idea at how effective his revision is. I know he is working and he’s motivated but that’s all !

Itscoldouthere · 24/02/2019 12:44

Thanks Piggy that’s a really good idea about the modules, interesting most biology courses seem to have all compulsory units in yr 1, but Reading doesn’t so there is a big difference in the way it’s run. I think they may be more likely to accept a lower grade if he underperformed as they have already done that (but only if he puts them first) so it may make sense to put them as insurance.
Interesting to hear your thoughts on Lincoln, we ruled it out as we weren’t convinced about the quality of teaching, which I know is quite harsh, but the talk given by the head of the department was very underwhelming and we just didn’t feel it was very dynamic. Also my DH did some lecturing there several years ago (on a completely different course and as a guest/industry professional hes not a lecturer by profession) and he said he was very underwhelmed by the full time staff on the course, he felt some of it being that Lincoln is the type of location not everyone wants to live in , so getting staff can be difficult, but I do realise that this was biased without any hard facts!
I think that students enjoy Lincoln.

Piggywaspushed · 24/02/2019 12:47

They do extremely well in satisfaction surveys, have climbed up the league tables and have TEF Gold. It will be fine for my DS but , for a reason I can't quite put my finger on , it underwhelmed me. I don't think it's academic snobbery as I very much liked NTU and OBU. I think it was more that the students at the 'Welcome Desks' weren't full of the joys of Spring! I guess all that schmoozing makes more of a difference that one might think.

Itscoldouthere · 24/02/2019 13:15

Must say that I was really impressed by the enthusiastic students at Reading yesterday, then DS told me they were paid £11 an hour to be there 😂

Justanothermile · 24/02/2019 15:09

Birmingham definitely had clearing places for Maths last year, we checked. At one point DS was absolutely convinced he hadn't made the grades for Lancaster so we were looking at which universities had clearing places. He had actually turned Birmingham down, it was his fifth and 'where shall I put down, I've chosen four and can't think of another' choice.

Shimy · 24/02/2019 15:23

Piggy. - Just logging on. Re how do you find out those things, last yr I looked in clearing for the universities DS had in mind and noted them. Birmingham was ds’s Favourite when he went to open day but when Clearing opened and I checked Birmingham there was hardly anything there! Bearing in mind his predictions, we gave it a swerve. I think there was just one strange sounding course in there for Birmingham

. I also asked in a round about way at offer days. At UEA they replied, if you firm or insurance us we will consider you first before clearing, we were in clearing last yr and will be this yr too..... Grin.

I also asked at another uni if one applies late, what is the likeliness of getting a place through Clearing? Answer - we’re kind of very full as it is!

You can also get a feel for wether your preferred uni will go into Clearing by checking threads on Tsr. It is rather higgledy piggledy but usually you can find enough bits and bits to snuff out the one most likely to go into Clearing.

Shimy · 24/02/2019 15:35

Piggy & itscold it also follows to an extent that the more highly ranked a uni the less likely they are to have places in Clearing. So i’d take a guess and ‘firm’ them as aspirational and the other as insurance.

Shimy · 24/02/2019 15:38

Just seen pp said Birmingham was in Clearing for Maths last yr, I stand corrected.

Shimy · 24/02/2019 15:40

Must say that I was really impressed by the enthusiastic students at Reading yesterday, then DS told me they were paid £11 an hour to be there

The ones at Swansea we’re paid £8.50 Grin

Justanothermile · 24/02/2019 15:47

shimy - again, this surprised me last year. For maths, I think we found every top university for this course other than Oxbridge (who don't use clearing at all) and Durham. Numbers are low re birth years last year and this and there's no cap on student numbers - I suspect these are factors.

This was all types of maths i.e with stats, financial etc.

Itscoldouthere · 24/02/2019 15:52

Sometimes I wonder if us parents are just taken in by the wrong things🤔 I know I’ve certainly made some mistakes in my school choices in the past, by being swayed by the wrong priorities.
Thankfully in this instance the actual final choice isn’t up to me, we’ve had lots of discussion re the pros and cons but it is DS choice not mine and I will be happy with wherever he chooses and wherever he finally goes as to be honest they are look great to me !

Shimy · 24/02/2019 15:55

I agree just I would’ve thought a course like Maths et al popular enough to not need. Clearing.
