Aberystwyth

Has anyone got recent experience of Aberystwyth Uni? DS has a conditional place there for International Politics. I do know that Aber has a very good reputation in this area.
DS is a funny old fish and utterly demotivated ... but he does like the sound of the modules. He has a lowered (contextual ) offer of BBC already. he sits a scholarship exam next week and if he does OK, that could drop to CCD.

So far, so good. However, we live 200 miles away , and it isn't the easiest place to get to. DGPs live in Wales , but in the Valleys , so not all that near. DH thinks it is too far away and is steering DS towards Lincoln, Hull or NTU.

Because of distance, we haven't even visited most unis : most we have visited DS hasn't then applied to!

I have never lived near home. My DF is 400 miles away, my DM thousands! I live 500 miles from where I grew up and went to uni 200 miles away from where I lived. But DS is so unlike me, I wonder if he was swapped at birth!

I have all the info about league tables and so on, so don't need that kind of info. My concerns about Aberystwyth are more about the place, and how out of place someone from a boring town a hundred miles from the sea, somewhere in the east of England, might feel there!

I see that you are in Cambridgeshire. I would point out again that it RAINS A LOT there and the town is isolated. And you didn't say that the Valleys was near - they're nearer than Cambridge. How exciting though. Hooe he does well.

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2019 17:05

Hope not hooe.

@2boys I agree, there is a engineering festival shortly in Lincoln. It has one of the fastest growing digital business growth areas in the UK, it also has spark house business centre, which is fully supported business premises for students who want to stay and start a business in the city, funding support is available in addition to opportunities you already mention. Students are fully embraced in the city.

Love Sheffield, work in various places over the years and always leave thinking it must house the friendliest people in the UK, everyone I tend to meet are fabulous.

I'm not in Cambridgeshire! I'm aware of the rain. DH from Wales and I am from the West of Scotland. Rain is in the DNA!

Waving back @fussychica. Glad to hear your DS is doing well too! Can’t believe nearly 8 years have passed since they started!

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2019 19:36

Sorry. I think it's a great uni. Seaside is good. Fresh air etc. Smallish town - probably not as expensive as a lot of places. Course has a good reputation.
I only mention the rain because when I moved to the South East I couldn't believe how dry it was. I've moved around the country a fair bit and some parts on the west coastlines have horizontal rain. But you knew that!

Piggywaspushed · 29/01/2019 20:51

I moved to York, then Nottingham. I routinely walked about everywhere with a brolly for about 4 years because I couldn't shake the habit. Now I live in a an area so dry that if it rains I wonder what that stuff is and never have an umbrella to hand!

Yeah, if you live in the east, you just buy a new brolly each time it rains Grin

I apologise piggywaspushed, I didnt want to start a fight.
Yes NTU and Lincoln are 42 and 43.
Quite remarkable for Lincoln which only fully opening as Lincoln in 2005.
I can assure you it not only rains in both Hull and Lincoln, but snows quite often too.
We have snow in Hull most of eldest 18 years.
Lincoln uni closed for 4 days last year due to snow.
Its not just WalesGrin
