Wow that last thread filled up quickly. Well done to your DS, Piggy!

That's interesting Ruby, may I ask which course he is looking at? DS2 is going to offer holder days at both in the next few weeks. DS1 is at UEA and loves it but for a very different course. It would be ultra convenient to have them both at the same place but it's totally DS2' s choice

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/01/2019 20:13

Yes, very relieved especially as she's been so poorly and looking like she may fail at least one A level.

GoldenRuby · 24/01/2019 20:14

@sluj he wants to be a PE teacher, so his UEA course is Physical Education. The Birmingham course is Sports, Physical Education and Coaching Science. Lots of similarity in course content. (I know these courses aren't popular on MN/get looked down on so I haven't found many others on here with DC going down this route!)

GoldenRuby · 24/01/2019 20:16

@sluj can I ask what first year accommodation your DS1 had at UEA, as my DS is weighing up his preferences now. Thanks!

Laniakea · 24/01/2019 20:18

Thanks Titchy

Fazackerley · 24/01/2019 20:18

Ruby dd is doing the same! Although she wants to work in the health field so I don't think the course at uea will be quite right for her.

sluj · 24/01/2019 20:19

I have to say I was very glad when DS1 chose UEA Ruby. Its a really friendly and beautiful environment. Norwich is a great city too. Let me know if you need any advice from DS about accommodation but I think he would tell you to avoid the Village unless you really don't mind being slightly away from the action.

Fazackerley · 24/01/2019 20:21

Uea were the best communicators as far as dd is concerned. Don't think she's going to accept offer as it's a really long way away and the course is more aimed at those who want to teach.

sluj · 24/01/2019 20:24

Sorry, crossed posts there. DS was in the Village but would have preferred to be on the main campus I think. The Ziggurats seem extremely sociable which might suit someone with a less intense course than my DS. Some of his friends had ensuite campus like Hickling and Barton (and others I can't recall) and they seemed great but more expensive. Definitely on campus is best for that heady first year whirl.

GoldenRuby · 24/01/2019 20:44

@sluj thanks 😃. DS quite liked the Village when he looked round, so it is good to get that perspective. He doesn't want to be constantly partying, and thought the Ziggurats might be a bit too noisy for him! We know someone who was in Paston last year and they liked it. I suppose it all depends who you end up sharing with at the end of the day.

@Fazackerley great to have company! When my DS visited UEA the 2nd year student he talked was specialising in health modules and I think she may end up with a slightly different degree title - Physical & Health Ed or similar. Not sure if this is still possible as the course has changed this year.

sluj · 24/01/2019 20:51

Ruby, re the Village. You are right about it being who you share with. DS1's flat was largely made up of students from health care courses who had full on courses and placements so they weren't very sociable. DS found his friends outside the flat. The quieter reputation of the Village is attractive to people who will be doing night shift placements but it might mean there is not much social life. Having said that, some of the flats did seem livelier than his. Thank heavens there were lots of other opportunities to make friends.

pasanda · 24/01/2019 22:31

Well ds has had his 2nd offer. His 3rd choice. Oxford Brookes, BBC. Much more achievable than AAB!

Anyway, I am getting slightly panicked about all the offer days people are attending/planning to attend.

Will ds be too late to do these? Does each uni have more than one? Seeing as he only went to one open day, I feel he needs to see the others before making his choice (if he gets offers from the others that is!)

Shimy · 24/01/2019 23:07

I was reading earlier on about registering with a service that helps find a course for you via Clearing, I can’t seem to find the posts? Anyway, I remember seeing this advert pop up during resultsweek last ur but now don’t know where to find it. Can anyone help pls?

Threeforfree · 24/01/2019 23:07

We’re going to 2 offer days. One in Feb, one in March. Dd was given several choices of open day dates by each university. She only put these 2 uni courses down on her ucas form and they have both given her the same conditional grades. The offer days will be the decider which she firms and which she chooses as an insurance. She’ll still put both down just in case she missed narrowly and she’s got twice the chance one would still let her in! The offers are ABB. She’s never got below an A in any exam so she’s pitched it well and got an A in EPQ in the bag.

Shimy · 24/01/2019 23:29

@Fazack - DS has applied to 2 of those and got offers. Both above his pay grade judging by recent mocks. To be honest it’s starting to me feel ill Sad.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/01/2019 06:52

GoldenRuby I wish my DS was sporty enough to consider doing the courses your DS is applying for.

Of all the universities DS visited for open days, UEA was definitely the one with the best general vibe. It's DN's first choice for course and campus!

OP posts:
Fazackerley · 25/01/2019 07:19

I'm not sure why dd applied there as she's not sure the course is right - they do have a health 'pathway' however. Haven't been to open day! Maybe we should go.

She has a super low offer from OB which will be her insurance I think. She liked the open day and loved Oxford but has been a bit put off by the fact a LOT of local private school kids go there!!

GoldenRuby · 25/01/2019 07:32

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 thanks 😃. DS has severe dyslexia so we are rather proud of him to have found the thing he is good at and to have offers from all of his choices.

@Fazackerley DS has an offer from OB as well, but won't take it. He applied as he knows someone on their sport & business course and they are really enjoying it. The only thing that has put him off a bit is the limited (ie not enough teams) scope to play hockey. His friend is coming home most weekends to play as there were just too many people for the few teams they had. Not sure it is like this every year of course.

WheelyCote · 25/01/2019 07:32

Your here!

I've been looking out for this thread!
DS 18 is going through uni applications. He has three offers.

He's worried about his grades but the school /sixth form have been put into special measures. We've been told that uni's will lower a grade boundary in that instance as a special case. So I'm looking into that

DS is revising hard do hopefully he'll get the grades.

We've been looking at accommodation and the average price seems to be about 100 per weekShock

Fazackerley · 25/01/2019 07:35

Dd likes rowing but won't have a chance in hell of getting on a team at OB. I think she wants it as insurance as she has had health issues and really tough anxiety issues and it's almost an unconditional offer. She likes to plan and know what is going to happen, uncertainty is a killer. So she knows she will definitely get in there. She wnet to the sports coaching talk and wasn't impressed but much preferred the pure sports science course there.

VanCleefArpels · 25/01/2019 07:36

fazackerly she is right about private school and Oxford Brookes - it is considered the more acceptable of the ex-polys and certainly in my sons year was probably the top destination in terms of numbers from his very minor public school!

Fazackerley · 25/01/2019 07:41

Yes it was the top destination for our local private girls school!

GoldenRuby · 25/01/2019 07:48

Thinking about it DS' Hockey friend went to a reasonably well known private school. @Fazackerley is your DD doing A-levels or Btec? I hope the run into the exam season isn't too stressful for her. DS is on the Btec route so at least it isn't completely back end loaded.

Fazackerley · 25/01/2019 07:48

One of the best for research is Swansea. I really liked it! But dd worried its too isolated.

Fazackerley · 25/01/2019 07:51

GoldenRuby she is doing two a levels and a Btec a level equivalent. Predicted BB for the a levels (Inc PE) and will get a D for the btec, may retake an exam for a D*. She's also doing an epq.
