Wow that last thread filled up quickly. Well done to your DS, Piggy!

Sorry I got it wrong again!!!

We are still waiting to hear from Goldman Sachs, but it is JP Morgan that he has got to the final stage with. JP are doing the degree through Exeter. My DS is concerned that he doesn't actually go to Exeter, but has modules to complete in a training centre which are set and marked by the uni and therefore is not getting the full uni experience.

I think different DA's offer the uni element differently, I think he would be more keen if he did blocks at uni.

Shimy · 14/01/2019 16:30

Wiifi -You can't go wrong with an apprenticeship with GS and a degree from QM! i'd jump. DS wasn't interested at all which is a shame, i'm just being curious. I have also noticed the variation you mentioned between the various DGs and the university attached to the DG. Either way, I'm sure anyone who does a DG even if attached to the lowest ranking uni, isn't going to come out unemployed.

bizzey · 14/01/2019 16:56

Well the letter from Plymouth has been o pened...unconditial if firmed !.
Not a boat and i am sure it is standard letter but the wording says ..
"I have entered you nto our Potential High Achievers Scheme "

Unquote...due to his academic achivements and PS.

Nothing from UCAS or emails though.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/01/2019 17:03

I find it really strange the way these UIF offers seem to circumnavigate UCAS - still no sign of DS's York one updated on Track.

OP posts:
LIZS · 14/01/2019 17:05

With an UIF,you normally accept the grade offer on UCAS then status changes to
Unconditional.

Wiifitmama · 14/01/2019 17:07

@minesawine Yes I agree. We saw some like that and were less impressed. The GS one through QM is 3 days work, 2 days Uni each week.

@shimy I would LOVE for ds to get the GS degree app. However, it may not be his choice in the end. Who knows!

bizzey those A levels sound fine to me , if he is interested in people, in debate, and can write essays? He really is pointing himself firmly down the humanities route. Has he got a future career/ HE plan?

bizzey · 14/01/2019 17:29

@piggywaspushed thank you for your reply.

Yes he is very much of the HUMANitarin brain.. (no not a typo !) Ds1 is a maths /science brain..very interesting chats at our dinner table.
Trying to give both boys equal help and support and wanting ds2 to find his niche and not be in older brothers (silly clever brain ) shadow.

(Oh and thank you for finding it on the previous page !)

I'm a bit pissed off, so entertaining myself by reading MN Grin

Just wanted to say to those that are posting re the Degree Apprenticeships at the Investment Banks - they are a brilliant opportunity. My DS secured one last year (was in a position where he then has to reject all of his UCAS offers!, as the degree apprenticeships are a completely different application process). Agree that its not the full university experience but DS is lucky enough that there are quite a few apprentices in his intake - both from his firm and a number of other firms. They do attend uni one day a week and socialise a lot on the back of that. There is also no barrier to them attending/joining the university clubs.

DS was also lucky enough that the uni that delivers his degree was his first choice through UCAS.

It is hard work, working 4 days and delivering on all the units expected by the university. But salaried work and career progression while learning seems to be making if worthwhile - DS is loving the work aspect.

DS is studying software engineering - learning on the job/consolidating the theoretical while at work is perfect for this degree.

Wiifitmama · 14/01/2019 17:58

@celtithree that was really interesting - thanks! Is your ds with GS? If there is another investment bank doing them for software engineering, I would love to know! We have looked at as many different ones as we can find, but there aren't that many.

Shimy · 14/01/2019 18:16

I think the only drawback on the DA is that you're very limited geographically by wherever the organisation is based or the uni even aka Exeter, if you're not already living in Exeter. How do you sort accommodation those of you with dc doing them? or were you just lucky they happened to be near where you live? or do they just rent a place whilst there?I'm assuming student digs won't be possible if you're only going in once a week.

Wiifitmama · 14/01/2019 18:45

@shimy - it varies. Some of the degree app do provide accommodation. Dyson for instance all takes place on their campus - totally self contained and the students are in "pods". But they do not attend Uni which is one of the things I did not like about it. With Queen Mary's, I don't know as DS would live at home as we live in London.

Flyingarcher · 14/01/2019 18:50

Hi. Back again. Been hectic this week with auditions. He had Winchester on Weds that he didn't like. He said the interviewer wasn't interested in him at all and he doubted he'd get an offer but did by the next day of 96 points. Chichester yesterday that he loved. Got on so well. He is over the moon they've offered but big fall down to earth that they've said they want DDM on his extended diploma - that's 128 points! He isn't doing an extended dip - he id doing three separate subsidiary diploma BTec and should get 112 points. There is an outside chance he could get DDM but it would be very hard to raise up the Bus Studies. He has had an offer from Canterbury and then two more auditions at Chester and Essex, via a conservatoire, The latter, if you get an offer, you HAVE to put first.

Flyingarcher · 14/01/2019 18:53

@DitheringDan . I had this with DS. Acting or Sport? It was impossible to write a PS for both as they are too different. He has to choose. Why doesn't he do Music Tech?

Good luck.

celtiethree · 14/01/2019 19:06

@wiifitmama - have sent you a pm

Shimy · 14/01/2019 19:15

Wiifit - Definitely a whole new ball game. Lol at students living in pods! I wouldn't like the ones that don't involve attending classes at a uni at all. That's too insular.

AtiaoftheJulii · 14/01/2019 22:32

Oh, I'm obsessed with those pods! GrinGrinGrin

DitheringDan · 15/01/2019 08:54

Flying -- I think it's going in as English with Creative Writing, of which his Personal Statement was a fine example.

Why not Music Tech? Well, largely because Music was his direst A-level, really!

Laniakea · 15/01/2019 08:55

WiFit I went to QM a billion years ago (well the London but we had all our preclinical stuff in Mile End) ... I loved it so much, East London is my spiritual home Wink sorry about the Cambridge offer but your ds sounds like he has many interesting options!

Dd’s school (state comp) had a good year for Oxbridge - 8 interviewed for Oxford 6 offers & one of the non offer girls was picked up by Harvard in the early admissions round! Only two applied to Cambridge, one offer. They only got two in in total last year.

Next round of mocks start next week.

KittiesInsane · 15/01/2019 09:58

Off the point, but this made me grin:
it would be very hard to raise up the Bus Studies

Oldest DS would so be up for a degree in studying buses!

glitterbiscuits · 15/01/2019 11:30

Well, today is deadline day. 6pm tonight. I hope everyone's DCs are sorted.

I'm hoping unconditional offers will now come flooding in for my underachiever!

DitheringDan · 15/01/2019 11:33

Mmm, well, DS is at work all day and his promised reference hadn't yet come through when he left, which might be a snag.

On the plus side, he'll be really well sorted for applying next year, I suppose.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/01/2019 11:41

DitheringDan he can still apply after the deadline though - just not quite sure the applications are treated in quite the same way. You'd need to check the UCAS website for more details.
