New thread, I hope it's okay to start one.

Good luck today for those still waiting for interview news, which includes us.

Congratulations to those already with dates.

Good Christmas here too, thanks! 11 days to Oxford decision day! My DD is already really apprehensive and impatient! She is thinking to take the day off to come to terms with the outcome whatever it may be! Smile

Hubbleisback · 29/12/2018 12:54

Puzzledmum I took the day off work myself and once my DS had his offer he went into college. Many of his friends went into college as normal and were informed by a UCAS update. The college emails arrive at various times through the morning so for some students UCAS was their first indication. I would advise for the student to stay at home only if someone is with them, otherwise probably best to be with friends.

Hubbleisback · 29/12/2018 13:05

DC should stay home I believe if they judge it to be right for them. People handle success and disappointment differently and they may need their space. Others need to celebrate with friends or be forced to put things in perspective. Your DD should do what is best for her Puzzled.

Hollybollybingbong · 29/12/2018 13:36

Good luck to all DC.
Last year DD waited until she was home from school before opening the email, this year she's taken the day off work.
DC will know what's best for them.

A friend of DD went into school after a rejection and choose not to discuss it, she then went into a lesson where a teacher sympathised loudly with her, DD knows herself well enough to know she wouldn't be able to smile and nod through that!

LIZS · 29/12/2018 17:44

Not really an option to stay home at dc school, mocks fall across both offer dates.

Puzzledmum · 29/12/2018 21:31

Hubble - to be honest, I think I’ll take the day off also, or at least can go in late. My DD has one lesson on this day, so not a huge loss if she is absent. I’ll let her do whatever she feels is best for her.
This is so unfortunate to have mocks on the offer dates! My DD’s fall after feb half-term.
I hope all DC get good news soon!

Coleoptera - I was thinking how are we going to be able to get up in the morning after the holidays! Seems impossible to me! Today I had 10 hours sleep!!! Dreading going back to be honest!

TheFrendo · 30/12/2018 12:25

Cambridge produce a report of the number of applications, offers and acceptances by school.

www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/apply/statistics

Eton for example had 73 applications, received 27 offers and ended with 22 acceptances.

My son's (state) school had 6 applications, received 4 offers with 4 acceptances.

It appears that proportionally independent schools put more students forward than state schools in general. If you take acceptances as a percentage of applications, then my son's school has a hit rate of 67%, Eton has a hit rat eof 30%.

Perhaps state schools should be encouraged to put more students forward?

Does anyone work in this area?

Rianna · 30/12/2018 13:34

Puzzledmum happy to haar someoelse is hibernating too ...days are getting longer again though. I can’t bring uni up as son gets all grumpy . I hope he finds out before going to school on the ninth . He will go to school if it’s a no ... he prefers his friends to me for some obscure reason .

Puzzledmum · 30/12/2018 14:34

Rianna - hibernating is an understatement here Grin I am the laziest I have ever been this holiday! Maybe it is because we did not go away. I hope my DD hears early in the morning also, so we know how to plan the day! I am very tempted to take the day off whatever the outcome 😉

mumsneedwine · 30/12/2018 14:50

TheFrendo its partially a marketing thing. Fee paying schools have to sell themselves to prospective parents and one way to do this is have great headline Oxbridge numbers (as parents like these). So students are encouraged to apply.

State schools don't really care as much and encourage kids to apply to courses they like - sometimes these are Oxbridge but often not these days. They offer great courses for some, but many students want a different way of learning with industry years and no tutorials, so apply elsewhere. For instance in medicine you don't see a patient for the first few years at Oxbridge whereas other places let you loose on them in first term. No one way is better but I think this explains the higher applicant numbers from fee paying schools. They need to have good Oxbridge figures to attract parents who like Oxbridge ! My bog standard comp's parents have no choice but to come to us (although our rate was 82% in 2017 from that data Smile).

mumsneedwine · 30/12/2018 14:52

PS good luck to all you kids. It's a tough process and they work so hard to get to this stage. My friends DD is at Oxford doing languages and absolutely loves it. My brother did PPE (first student at our school to go to Uni and he was discouraged from applying - so he did it anyway).

GeorgeTheHippo · 30/12/2018 15:06

Sorry to be dim, but I can't find the Cambridge figures by school from that link (I've read all 31 pages of the PDF for the last cycle). Can anyone help?

GeorgeTheHippo · 30/12/2018 15:07

Oh wait, the other PDF..... 😀

Rianna · 30/12/2018 15:14

Puzzled is it for oxford ? My understanding it will be updated early in the morning on the ucas website . So I will know hopefully before school . My son checks his mail at school and would text me later on. If disappointed he’s better off at school .I don’t think many of his school applies to oxford , Cambridge was the more popular choice . I will see if I can find that info about the ucas form . About being lazy : why is it ok on the beach and not at home ? Chill out ! Our bodies tell us to ;-)

Rianna · 30/12/2018 15:16

What do they mean by ‘early in the morning ‘? I hope that’s before 8.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/12/2018 15:17

There must be some good reason why so many cultures in the northern hemisphere have had midwinter festivals for aeons - Saturnalia, Yule, Christmas!Smile

Rianna · 30/12/2018 15:22

Errol you’re right about that !

Aurea · 30/12/2018 16:09

My son's state school is

Aurea · 30/12/2018 16:10

Sorry wrong way round. >.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/12/2018 16:23

You were right the first time..
Pity those tables aren't sortable. Out of curiosity scanning for large numbers this jumped out ... nature and nurture beats private schooling?!

Hills Road Sixth Form College CB2 8PE. Maintained 96 38 29

TheFrendo · 30/12/2018 16:32

There is no indication of cohort size in the table.

A quick Google shows that Hills Road Sixth form is massive, with a year size of ~1200 students.

So 29 going to Cambridge is 1 in 40.

Eton has about 240 in a year, so they get about 1 in 11 to Cambridge.

My son's school has ~110 in a year, 1 in 28 get to Cambridge.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/12/2018 17:03

Yes, DD and I were just taking a look (she was curious to see stats for some of her pals schools) and I belated realised the absence of cohort size.
