New thread, I hope it's okay to start one.

Good luck today for those still waiting for interview news, which includes us.

Congratulations to those already with dates.

Thank you old and gold . Tbh I have simplified my x mas routine : kids will hang their old rubbish in the tree ( which I keep in garden every year )and for x mas dinner the max decoration is a candle and festive napkins ... I keep it simple as the x mas stress got to me a few years ago . There’s probably a thread about this . And about Brexit ...but I’ll skip that one ;-)

Rianna · 13/12/2018 09:00

One question : are the interviewers going to be your tutors in case you’re accepted ? I’m asking as my son seemed to like one college in particular .

HingleMcCringleberry · 13/12/2018 09:26

Rianna - it depends. If you were sent to another college, the interviewer there may also have been shipped in from another college. I would check each college's website and see who the tutors/lecturers are, that should be the clearest guide.

But broadly yes - the interviewer in the college will be your tutor. For better or worse!

Rianna · 13/12/2018 09:43

Thing is that he really liked the tutor from the college he did’t applaus to . But he will be happy either way if he gets in of course . I just wonder how it works - for example that tutor could like him to perhaps and then the colleges between would decide ? No idea . Not much point in speculating either I guess ;-). Let’s wait and see what will happen .

goodbyestranger · 13/12/2018 11:15

Tutors also have a habit of going on sabbatical. Also, it depends on the structure of the course and the options. You definitely can't rely on an interviewing tutor teaching you. But they might.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2018 11:43

DDs DoS was on sabbatical last year. But the supervisions are done by various people (including postgrads) who are specialists in the particular area. This is probably the norm for courses such as engineering and Nat sci, and probably for other stem subjects - back in the day on my RG chemistry degree we had separate tutors for different branches of chemistry.

goodbyestranger · 13/12/2018 11:46

Errol arts and humanities and social sciences are no different! People still specialise!

OlderThanAverageforMN · 13/12/2018 11:54

Rianna et al applying to Oxford. Don't get too hung up on tutors. DD's BioMed tutors were all over the place. She had in college tutors, but also went to other colleges for specific tutorials in specific modules as well as having lectures at the science centre, and of course labs as well. It was nice to get out and about. She graduated this year, and loved her time there.

Message from Brasenose, Oxford on TSR.

Oxbridge applications 2019 (part two).
Lumpy76 · 13/12/2018 14:17

So it seems everyone is done with the interviews!! Now for the waiting! I’m not sure the e mail from Brasenose makes anything particularly clear...except that they will send letters out on the 8th...or I might just be being thick!! The way I had understood from dd was that she would receive an e mail from college at lunchtime ish on the 9th but might be able to tell from ucas track first thing on the 9th. I really hope that she can as being the only oxbridge candidate from her school and the very first ever candidate (her year is the first to do A levels since the school was set up) she feels quite pressured and really doesn’t want to receive a rejection whilst in school!

Rianna · 13/12/2018 14:30

Lumpy keep her home . What one day of school . Champagne for yes and chocolate for no ;-)

Rianna · 13/12/2018 14:33

Thanks older than average for MN

Malbecfan · 13/12/2018 17:30

Thank you Justanothermile She sent me a text saying it was over but she has no idea how she got on. DH was meeting some prospective clients so DD went for a wander round Cambridge market. They are on their way home, ETA is another 90 minutes.

Now just the small matter of 3 Carol Services for her and 5 for me plus a concert on 22nd before I can wind down....

Malbecfan · 13/12/2018 17:34

Ooh sorry, should have added that DD1 is a 2nd year NatSci student. Last year her supervisors were all PhD students. This year she has a mixture; some are PhD students or post docs, and one was her Director of Studies last year but is now Head of Chemistry. He seems to spend quite a bit of time helping them with Maths. Her supervisions are still in pairs, but she has got to know her "supo partners" very well and made some great friends. They are also not necessarily in her college.

Exactly what mocks are for. Keep her on her toes.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2018 22:47

It was the specimen of 2 years ago I believe

If it was the same board (I can't remember which) I think that was the reaction from DDs cohort 2 years ago to that paper. The results of the real exam were fine.

I think it's so hard for them to know how they did isn't it Malbec? Dd felt all her interviews went well, in so much as she engaged positively, answered all of the questions, felt probed but in a positive way etc... But, I'm sure very many of her fellow interviewees felt similarly and even then - they might have been looking for something else!

Dd is also shattered and ready to finish. Thankfully, yesterday was a study day, which she only gets every other week and so was perfectly timed so that she could at least have a day to recover.

old - physics would be tougher without maths, and a massive step up from GCSE my DS found (he did Maths and FM, but found Physics his hardest subject). Hope your Dd is okay.

old - We need to change our names, I keep reading your messages Grin

I just wanted to say good luck to you especially with one doing GCSE mocks, and one doing ALevel mocks and Oxbridge interviews. I have the bigger gap, so DD1 graduated, and DD2 GCSE mocks, but I did have the stress of DD1 applying and interviews for jobs, getting job, and now moving to London. It never really stops, but keeps us all on our toes Grin

Couchpotato3 · 14/12/2018 17:29

DS has mocks starting on the first day back after Christmas - you've guessed it - 9th Jan. Argh!

Message was suddenly gone ...my kids complain I’m too involved already ...
I never even check bedtimes during exam weeks . If they want to watch a film right before an a level , I trust they know their stuff and need to relax . Not to say I am right or wrong or anyone else is , I’m just a bit surprised .

Rianna · 15/12/2018 15:56

Ladies dis your kids think everyone was posh when they went for their interview ? My son thought people were normal . I don’t think I’m posh myself . What did your children think ?
