New thread, I hope it's okay to start one.

Good luck today for those still waiting for interview news, which includes us.

Congratulations to those already with dates.

Pandas I am now very curious what your daughter’s subject is! Pointless degree you say, hmmm very very interesting! I did not think there are such degrees offered at Oxford. We call them Micky mouse degrees at my uni lol.

PantTwizzler · 06/12/2018 21:40

I spoke to a tearful DD earlier. She had two awful interviews at other colleges. One of them kept asking a question she couldn’t answer. The other one started late and was cut short by 10 minutes which DD interpreted as a very bad sign. Then to add insult to injury she got back too late for supper, and all her “friends” had gone out without her. She can’t contact them because of the mobile outage. So all gloom and doom here.

Nearly 30 years ago I got interviewed by a 2nd college but still got a place at my 1st choice college. Nowadays I’m assuming it means DD didn’t get her 1st choice college and it seems like she didn’t get the pooled ones either.

Couchpotato3 · 06/12/2018 21:48

Don't despair Pantwizzler. Tutor at a second college interview very kindly told DS that being called to another college did not mean that his original application was not still 'live' or under consideration. They just wanted to see him too.

Hubbleisback · 06/12/2018 21:55

PartTwizzlerr you really do not know how she did. Sometimes people come out distressed because they have been really pushed. It is over now and time to celebrate Christmas. Flowers

PantTwizzler · 06/12/2018 21:58

Thanks both. You’re right of course.

pandasandpeas · 06/12/2018 22:20

PantTwizzler your poor DD. As others have said though - you can never know because it’s probably worse in her head. And whichever way it goes she did an amazing job to get so far and I’m assuming she has other great offers? (As I’m quite new to the thread I don’t know about everywhere else people have applied/second choices!)

Puzzledmum · 06/12/2018 22:26

Panttwizzler do not despair, she probably did better than expected. It is always heartbreaking when they are unhappy and you can do nothing to make it better.

Lumpy76 · 06/12/2018 22:41

@goodbyestranger we have 8dc too! 😁 However we are just starting with higher education as our DD who was interviewing this week is our eldest. I’m hoping DS (2nd dc) will be inspired to work a little harder instead of cruise and be doing this next year! Our youngest is only 2 so we’ve quite a while with him yet! 😂😂

Runzilla · 06/12/2018 23:10

Well after two interviews today, one of which went better than the other, ds has had a great evening in the pub with new friends. So glad he's ending on a good note - whatever happens it's been a taste of independence. Can't wait to see him tomorrow night

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/12/2018 06:36

Dd2 who is 14 has already decided that Cambridge is not for her after watching dd1 jump through all the application hoops to apply. But she's only this year taking her options. She's a clever girl too but although she doesnt particularly coast, she doesnt work like a Trojan like dd1 does. Plenty of time for that to change though.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/12/2018 09:03

We're here. I'm waiting in the parents' waiting area. She's gone off for her first interview which is in 20 minutes.

Puzzledmum · 07/12/2018 09:09

Good lick to your daughter DrMax!

Lililili · 07/12/2018 09:40

Good luck!

If a college provides a place for parents to wait, then it's obviously because their experience is that some parents want a place to wait. Don't overthink it, just do what works for you!Smile

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/12/2018 12:33

Plenty of parents in the bar area. Complimentary refreshments too.

She's all done. Relieved it's over with and happy with her answers.

Now for a museum visit and a bit of shopping before the 4.5 hour drive home.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/12/2018 12:34

The students get to choose whether to wait with their parents, which some did or to wait in the jcr instead.

Aurea · 07/12/2018 14:21

Apologies in advance as I know I'm fussing and I have to be patient.

If you come from a 'wider access' demographic, do you stand more of a chance of an offer? In our case, it's being Scottish and applying from a school with very few successful applications to Oxbridge (one every couple of years on average).

Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part. I know they have targets, but....

goodbyestranger · 07/12/2018 14:40

Thye're bound to stand a better chance Aurea. The UNIQ application is quite clear that it's hunting for Scots. A small compensation for midges, rain etc etc :)

goodbyestranger · 07/12/2018 14:41

(I'm half Scots and have much experience of midges, rain etc etc).

Aurea · 07/12/2018 14:57

Thank you!

He did apply to Uniq but didn't obtain a place, unfortunately.

Hi cleo my dd is in the same boat for history she was told that the colleges couldn’t make decisions so it has gone to the history faculty and they had to wait until 4.30 then they were all told to leave. No one has been pooled from the sounds of it. She is very fed up as her interview was at 9 yesterday so has been hanging around for nothing

Hubbleisback · 07/12/2018 16:58

No Coleoptera keep positive and deal with disappointment if and when it happens. Your DS is bright and will already know how the numbers stack up anyway.

Justanothermile · 07/12/2018 17:02

I think it will be what it will be coleptera. We plan to get the process over with next week and then enjoy Christmas. At least the offers all come out on a set date, via a specific means of communication.

Aurea, Dd did UNIQ, I'd quite like to know if this will benefit her application. And, much as I'd like to consider this and contextual data help, factually its a 60/40% (broadly) split between state and independent school offers. I'm not criticising, but that's how it is.

Well done to your DD Madeline.

8 DC......

How's your Dd today pantTwizzler? I'm sure it's difficult to read anything into anything being honest.

panda DD's degree is somewhat niche, and she hasn't studied the subject ever. DS isn't back until next week but I'm ready for it now! Re the sport - I compete at Masters level (old farts!) and probably train two hours a day on average. It's tough fitting it in, with work, home and some study too for coaching. I'm a cow quite frankly if I don't train for a period, so I get how your Dd feels.
