New thread, I hope it's okay to start one.

Good luck today for those still waiting for interview news, which includes us.

Congratulations to those already with dates.

Hingleberry she’s a strong willed character - she usually does 19 hours of sport a week and is really struggling this week because she’s barely been able to do any, and not at the standard she’s used to. She also felt the two tutors in the interview were hostile and being unfair in keeping her when they could clearly see she wasn’t enjoying it so she in turn became hostile. It felt like a punishing process.

I don’t think Oxbridge is for her at all and neither does she - she just wanted to apply for a really weird course that is available in very few universities! She probably won’t take up the offer in the unlikely event she does get it as her other options are better in terms of the more rounded experience she’d need if she did go to uni. I’m not sure academia is for her at all actually, despite her grades, which is why she’s taking a year out. She’s more sporty than academic tbh, I think her school just wanted her to apply to university and everyone else is going through the process so she felt she should. She’s always craved being ‘normal’.

HingleMcCringleberry · 06/12/2018 13:56

Poor thing. It's not fun when you're being dragged away from something you love doing. As an elite sportswoman, she's never going to be 'normal' though, that is serious dedication!

Couchpotato3 · 06/12/2018 14:28

DS has been called to two other colleges this afternoon. No idea how he will manage as the interviews are virtually back to back in different places. He is exhausted, but hopefully will get in gear once he's in there.

I'm feeling like a piece of chewed stringConfused

PantTwizzler · 06/12/2018 14:34

Good luck to DS couch. I know what you mean.

Puzzledmum · 06/12/2018 14:36

Couchpotato3 I hope your DS manages the back to back interviews, that is really stressful! I think my DD is exhausted too already and she only had one so far.
Talking about how you feel - when I dropped her on Tuesday, I got in the car and simply felt getting sick in that very moment. My body ached, my throat was sore, headache you name it! I had to stop on the way back to buy meds. I basically have been in bed since then and could not go to work this week! I hope I’ll be better tomorrow to go and collect her! This is just too much!

Mumsnut · 06/12/2018 15:14

Called to St Benet's, a Permanent Private Hall. No idea what to make of that.

Aurea · 06/12/2018 15:28

Ok. A bit weird. No law candidates from Trinity, Oxford have been called to other colleges for interviews. There were 18 interviewees for 6 places. Can anyone shed some light on this?

PantTwizzler · 06/12/2018 15:33

What subject mumsnut?

That sounds odd Aurea. When do they have to stay until? Possibly interviews tomorrow?

pandasandpeas · 06/12/2018 15:36

Aurea I don’t know but maybe it means Trinity found 6 they wanted from their candidates so haven’t pooled or taken from the pool? 18 for 6 sounds quite standard for law but I don’t know.

Aurea · 06/12/2018 15:42

Thanks! When they send candidates off to other colleges do they have to pool back (reciprocate) then? It's all so complicated.

Aurea · 06/12/2018 15:43

They have been told they are free to leave from 4.30pm. My DS is staying overnight as he has a long train journey back to the Highlands.

PantTwizzler · 06/12/2018 15:45

Ah so that’s definitely it then Aurea. 33% chance doesn’t sound too bad for Law I suppose...

ErrolTheDragon · 06/12/2018 15:50

Called to St Benet's, a Permanent Private Hall. No idea what to make of that.

Never heard of one of those, but maybe it's just where the interviewer finds convenient?

pandasandpeas · 06/12/2018 16:11

I don’t think they have to pool back, no. They may have taken from the pool despite not pooling if they didn’t find 6 candidates they liked - I was just trying to make the stats as hopeful as possible for your DS!

pandasandpeas · 06/12/2018 16:16

DD’s had her other two interviews now, has been released is now safely stowed at her friend’s house in a village just outside Oxford. She will make her 4.30am coach tomorrow! She said they were both okay - one very difficult but the interviewers were nicer and it only went on for the allocated 30 minutes so she was okay with it. The other one was again fun... as she puts it, “I just chatted a load of utter shit
and it felt like he was lapping it up”. She reckons she hasn’t got in but is pretty happy she didn’t because it doesn’t seem to suit her. I’m also relieved if I’m honest. She’s very much looking forward to being home again! DD2 has been enjoying sleeping on her double mattress though so is not.

pandasandpeas · 06/12/2018 16:19

She did inform me that she not only referenced Pirates of the Caribbean in one of her interviews but also managed to slip in a nod to the Kardashians AND the Delevignes. Shame there isn’t a pop culture degree. She also started quietly humming when one of the interviewers unintentionally said a line from a song. They probably think she’s totally nuts.

Puzzledmum · 06/12/2018 16:32

Pandas your DD’s antics did make me chuckle! She certainly sounds.... eccentric Grin. I am sure she’ll end up in the best possible place for her! As long as she enjoyed the experience and had fun!

Malbecfan · 06/12/2018 17:25

Pandas DD1 sang a bit of the periodic table song in her interview 2 years ago. One of the interviewers then googled it (whist DD was still writing it out) and played a bit to her to see if it was the right version. She did get an offer, albeit from a completely different college & is now a 2nd year there.

Aurea it means that they've either firmly accepted or firmly rejected all of the candidates and that none of the eighteen are under consideration anywhere else. It doesn't necessarily mean that six of those eighteen will get places at Trinity though, since it's not known if they're bringing in pooled applicants tomorrow. And no, there's no reciprocity since that wouldn't make sense.

Puzzledmum · 06/12/2018 17:51

Coleoptera I am sorry your son had a bad second interview. Perhaps he was interviewed by the two horrible women someone mentioned in another thread? Apparently they are very unfriendly and hostile. I hope he did better than he thought!

TheFrendo · 06/12/2018 17:56

Son had his Cambridge maths interviews this week. He seemed quite relaxed, but I was nervous and pacing about at a distance of some 150 miles.

All the questions were maths questions. Not a single mention of, or reference to, anything in the personal statement.

He felt the questions were reasonable, almost suspiciously so.

Now begins the long wait until January the 14th (or whenever it is).

Wallows · 06/12/2018 17:59

Aurea, DD had the same at Christ Church for History of Art- three candidates for every place and no candidates were pooled.
