Medicine 2020

Ok, so I know it's super early, but I've been hovering at the medicine 18 and 19 threads. DD is keen to apply for medicine in 2020. Is anyone else in the same boat?
I thought it would be useful to share info and stories, it's all a very steep learning curve because despite me now having a PhD and working in a RG university I was late to learning and not a patch on my DD who is very driven and organised.
Hopefully people will find this group and we can share the rollercoaster of the next two years.

Congratulations to your DS!

speedyhedgehog · 03/12/2019 18:40

Yay hatti! @chickpea my dd has interviews at Birmingham and Edinburgh next week. I think they are sending them out in batches and there's still time.

MedSchoolRat · 03/12/2019 19:27

DD had interview in London today... she forgot her passport (sigh), but after panicking her dad & us finding out my phone was accidentally on silent -- she confirmed with KCL that her prov. drivers license would be accepted ID.

Interview itself went well enough but she managed to miss her London departure back... so I'll have to cough up an extra £35 or so for the excess fare, AND I have to drive 35 miles roundtrip to fetch her from nearest city (no late trains to our town).

So Bits of hassle but I'm still grateful I didn't have to take a day off myself to get her there & back. Another interview end of next week (UCL), so hopefully she'll not repeat the same mistakes (!)

Glad things are going well for everyone - bar the occasional paperwork drama 😂
Good news for DD as she received an interview for Nottingham so will have them all done before Christmas. I will not be beaten to death with 101 MMI question book for encouraging her to apply! An intense week with one on the 16th and one on the 19th December which involves an overnight stay on the 18th. I will be a wet blanket by the 20th December as I am so very very over invested in DD1 and all her hopes and dreams. Massive hand hold for the middle of December please and any Keele or Nottingham tips gratefully received too.

Pigment84 · 03/12/2019 20:57

My DD got an interview invite to Nottingham! Still nothing from Birmingham.

Chickpeamad · 03/12/2019 21:16

Ok, thanks, I think no news is still good news then at the moment. Good luck. Smile

PiggyPokkyFool · 03/12/2019 21:27

Yay @Hattifatteners and @Pigment84 - when are they going?

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2019 22:13

@Chickpeamad when is your DS going to Cambridge? Mine has his at 8:30 am on election day (Christ's) and is taking up the offer of accommodation in college as it is so early.

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2019 22:14

Is Nottingham the most popular on here this year?

mumsneedwine · 03/12/2019 22:27

The Orchard Hotel is really nice to stay at on campus at Notts. Can walk to med school through campus. Good luck to everyone. When DD went they laid on a tour for the kids after interviews which swung it for her as she loved the skills labs.

SummerbodyIwish · 03/12/2019 22:51

Waiting to hear from Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle. Interview next Thursday at Sheffield. DS so laid back about it all, hes driving me mad!

medicineappstress · 03/12/2019 22:56

Has anyone heard from Bristol? DD has 2 interviews coming up, just waiting for Bristol and Imperial.

Shangrilalala · 04/12/2019 05:03

Yes, DD received her Bristol invitation a few weeks ago. There was much debate amongst her friends that they were inviting in batches and slowly moving down the UCAT scores, but I’m not so sure. Still a number of her friends waiting too.

She’s yet another Nottingham invitee.

Boredisboring · 04/12/2019 06:07

DD had her Bristol interview last week. Cambridge is coming up next week and Edinburgh has asked her for interview in January. Still waiting for Manchester.

Hattifatteners · 04/12/2019 08:00

@speedyhedgehog good luck for your DD next week. @PiggyPokkyFool I'm glad your DD got the Nottingham interview! You live to see another day :-). DS booked his interview for 15th Jan. He has one in Leicester next week and he couldn't face the idea of travelling again on the following week. @Pigment84 Congratulations to your DD for Nottingham interview too!

FiveHoursSleep · 04/12/2019 13:09

DD has got an interview at Manchester today. She only applied for Birmingham and Manchester med schools ( applied for nursing with her other three choices) and has interviews for both of them.
Birmingham next week and Manchester in Jan.

medicineappstress · 04/12/2019 13:22

I did wonder if Bristol were doing theirs in batches. DD will just have to wait and see. No news is good news?? Anyway she's got interviews at Cardiff and Oxford coming up. It's all very stressful!

SummerbodyIwish · 04/12/2019 13:32

Manchester offer of interview here too. YAY !

strawberrypopsicles · 04/12/2019 14:41

DD also got a interview from Manchester! So that’s 4/4 interviews which is good. Hope to convert them into offers Smile

Congrats to anyone else with new interview news !

strawberrypopsicles · 04/12/2019 14:42

I believe bristol go down in UCAT score. DD had an interview quite a while back which I seem to have forgotten about which isn’t great of me Grin

Monkey2001 · 04/12/2019 14:51

Woah, coming in thick and fast now!

@medicineappstress I assume you know that Bristol is now all on UCAT and very high, last year the cut off was 2730. Around 2800 feels safe, but it is difficult to guess where it might be this year.

@FiveHoursSleep - interesting that your DD has done 2 medicine and 3 nursing applications. Does she intend to apply for a graduate medicine course with her nursing degree if she does not get a medicine offer or is she keen on a career in nursing? I am asking because DS's GF had disappointed A level results (ACD) and wants to do medicine but is thinking of doing Biomed and applying to graduate medicine. I was wondering whether she should consider re-sitting the Chemistry, hopefully getting ABC and applying to nursing with an option to do grad medicine in 3 years if she wants to. Would be interested to hear your DD's thoughts.

medicineappstress · 04/12/2019 16:17

Sorry I don't know how to tag people on the app.
Yes I know Bristol use ucat score, hopefully DD will be above the cutoff this year as well. She's very happy to have the oxford interview.

FiveHoursSleep · 04/12/2019 17:57

@Monkey2001 I don't think DD has thought that far, she just can't make up her mind yet and wants to keep her options open! I suspect she will choose nursing in the end but I also suspect she will regret it at some point!

Sgnitt · 04/12/2019 19:36

We are waiting on Imperial. They seem to be very slow this year. Anybody have any clue when we might hear? At this stage l’m assuming MMIs after Xmas?

Monkey2001 · 04/12/2019 22:15

I thought Imperial did panel interviews but maybe they have changed.
