Now that they are back at school, working on Personal Statements, doing the final Open Day visits, I thought we could do with a new thread...

Yes, it is a high performing grammar. DD can cope with the work load, but obviously 3 A levels is easier than 4. And it’s not as though she is passionate about maths - she is good at it, but it does not come as naturally to her as languages do.

MarchingFrogs · 17/09/2018 09:54

You can drop / change subjects after UCAS submission, but must inform UCAS and all your universities that you have done so.

UEA has a lovely lake (not sure what is offered there in the way of Ancient History etc, though), Birmingham a smaller one on campus, but there is a lake out the other side of the gardens of Winterbourne House, which is just across Edgbaston Park Road and is free to enter for students.

MarchingFrogs · 17/09/2018 10:06

@nokidshere, depending on how far you are from Loughborough, like most universities they have regular guided campus tours (it's not a university that DD is looking at, but I've just looked at the website and there are lots, including during half term), also you can just visit and take a 'self-guided' tour. Most don't include specific departments / accommodation, but if your DS contacts the relevant academic department in advance, at universities we have just 'toured', at least, it is sometimes possible to make an appointment to speak to someone before or after the tour.

Thank you @MarchingFrogs

Anybody there with DC considering choral scholarship at Cambridge? DS has applied for a vocal assessment next week.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/09/2018 16:17

Didn't Eddie Redmayne have a choral scholarship?

Monkey2001 · 17/09/2018 17:18

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I just looked him up and you are right. Thanks, a choral scholarship just got a whole lot cooler!

Piggywaspushed · 17/09/2018 18:00

I remember when I applied to university, the prospectuses all said how many places were available and how many typicall applied. Dies anyone know of an efficient way of finding out that info now? Unistats doesn't seem to do that. DS is likely to be a borderline candidate and I'd like to know where he's have a fighting chanceand where might be a wasted application.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/09/2018 18:13

Piggywaspushed I've not come across that type of information yet. It would be very helpful to have those facts to hand.

Mokey2001 glad to be of service Wink.

Decorhate · 17/09/2018 18:18

I would also be interested in that info. For the course ds is interested in, I found the intake in some prospectuses & it's been mentioned on some open days. But it would be handy if it had been collated somewhere.

I do know Unifrog does something like that but can't keep hacking DS's account!

I have just found on the Which site the % of candidates receiving offers , which is sort of the same thing, although it doesn't say how big the cohorts are.

The course I am looking at ranges from 100% to 40%!

LIZS · 17/09/2018 18:37

Dd has just submitted her UCAS application ...

Oldowl · 17/09/2018 18:40

Anyone got a DC applying aboard?

DD has her heart set on studying politics in The Hague (Leiden University).

Her school knows very little about applying to European universities, so if anyone has been through the process, I would love to pick your brains!

Decorhate · 17/09/2018 18:53

Wow LIZS must be nice to have it out of the way!

Nailbiting, had forgotten music grades until I reminded her!

Monkey2001 · 17/09/2018 20:51

Well done LIZS DS. Where has she applied? Will she have to go to interviews or just wait for the offers to flow in?

Monkey2001 · 17/09/2018 20:54

Meant DD!

LIZS · 17/09/2018 21:07

Not sure about offers flowing in! One interview and test (Cambridge) if she gets past selection process, others probably not although we will visit for any applicant/ offer holder days. Her school have an early submission deadline for medics, vets, Oxbridge etc but some have already gone in apparently.

Monkey2001 · 17/09/2018 21:27

Which college and subject is she going for? Sorry if you have already posted that, my brain is not what it was....

LittleSpace · 17/09/2018 21:49

Wow LIZS. That was fast.

BringOnTheScience · 17/09/2018 23:01

Dashes in late & pulls up a chair!!!

DC1 looking at linguistics. 3 open days done in summer with 3 to do this term. We're in Cambridge so I'm somewhat relieved that they want to move elsewhere!

Skyrabbit · 17/09/2018 23:19

Hi, can I join in please?!
This is our first time sorting through all this. DS has just completely tanked one of his mocks. Is this going to be a disaster, application wise?? He's so laid back it's sending me crackers. I'm stressing, but he's not 🙄

Gaelforce · 18/09/2018 02:26

OldOwl
I'm in Ireland and Dd doing the rounds of unis. This is a website that may help, you with info about universities in Europe. They have information days in Ireland every year - not sure about UK.

I guess he'd need to talk to the teacher of that subject about his predicted grade and his reference. Did he mess it up because he hasn't understood, or just didn't work, or did he feel prepared and it went wrong in some other way?

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2018 07:04

I am envious of all the people on this thread and, no offence intended, it is stressing me out. Please tell me I am not the only person with a DC who has no clue what he wants to do or where. He also 'tanked' his mocks (all of them really) with CCD . His MEGs , as they call them are only CCC , even though he got an A* in Spanish GCSE , so hopefully he can do better but I am not sure his teachers have vey high expectations. Sigh. School told me his UCAS predictions will basically be his mock results, which doesn't really seem in the spirit of things. But, essentially, he needs to pull his finger out and a) do some actual work and b) make some decisions. It is very very stressful. It also makes Open Days difficult as there is not just one talk to head to. He says university seems just liek anotehr three years of school and can'r see the point. He was also shocked by the UEA accommodation : and his bedroom is a shithole so that tells you something! He cannot cook, clean , or look after himself either ( I know! I have enabled him!!) Aaaargh!! So much anxiety!!

We have only done one proper Open Day so far and have got Huddersfield this weekend, and then Derby. But I am sure they won't be very fulfillign days out for me. I am not sure it's all worth getting up at 6 am for.
