Now that they are back at school, working on Personal Statements, doing the final Open Day visits, I thought we could do with a new thread...

Two of mine applied to Glasgow and got prompt offers - one was the quickest, less than 24 hours, the other was a bit slower, about a week. Neither were 'big' subjects though, volume of applications might affect it.

I just thought, I think I remember someone asking about this earlier - DD was able to swap a UCAS option the day after submitting. It was a very easy process!

Report
howabout · 03/11/2018 08:09

DD read out the rules on swapping to me on her UCAS acknowledgement email.

DD's kid sister was visiting while we were doing all the admin. She reckons loads and loads of people she started with swapped courses and even Unis in the first 3 months. Her Uni facilitated to try to make sure all the square and round pegs didn't spend 3 years miserably mismatched. DH's and her nephew is about to graduate and his experience was the same. So it's not a fait accompli if the exact course choice applied for is not as expected.

howabout in DD’s case it was a change of institution - she realised Nottingham was wayyy too south Grin

Well DS2 is at Worcester today and is texting back that he loves it and it's jumped to the top of his list. He hasn't done his ucas application yet though? I thought it dint have to be in till January?

It doesn't nokidshere but many MNetters' DC seem to have got theirs in early. DS is still waiting on feedback on his personal statement from his form tutor so his hasn't gone yet (and at this rate won't go until the end of the month!).

Nokids,

Those of us with UCAS Conservatoire entrants had to get forms submitted to UCAS by 1st October.

Those applying to Oxbridge had a deadline of 15th October.

For everyone else it is 'between the opening date' (which I think was back in the summer holidays, presumably for those applying after A-levels) and the final deadline in January. Schools seem to have different 'internal' deadlines running as well, probably taking into account reference-writers' workloads and other key dates such as mock exams.

Report
howabout · 03/11/2018 15:01

Don't panic, the deadline is January. I only pushed DD1 to get on with hers as she was in hospital for the best part of a month at the start of the school year and was needing the focus to get her back to normal. It also gets rid of a bit of pressure to have it done. She knows what she wants to study and since she wants to stay in Scotland her options are pretty much self-limiting around her existing grades. My only misgiving is that some of the Unis have been known to sit on all applications until the January deadline.

Would have a hard job persuading my lot South of Glasgow pancake. Smile

Howabout we have the reverse problem. Trying to persuade DS to apply to a Scottish university or two (particularly as DH's side of the family is effectively 95%l Scottish) but he won't hear of it. Far too far away unknown territory...

My DH's family are all London and further South NewModel Grin

Truly manky Glasgow weather today, so perhaps your DS has a point. Tbh DD1 has trouble getting her head round the fact that Edinburgh doesn't pedestrianise all its cobbled streets like they do in the West - came back from the Open Day suggesting she had been on the set of Deathrace 2000.

I'm with her on that one. Glasgow is so much more civilisedwalkable ! Grin

DD's boyfriend is at Glasgow. The halls are not that near the university or near the town centre. They use Uber a lot. Glasgow is very much a party place and IMO the BF's drinking is out of control. He is still behaving like it is fresher's week. To be fair his halls have a reputation for noisy parties. Maybe when they go into private accommodation in year 2 they will settle down.

DD is at Glasgow and in 2nd year. The halls are about a 20 min walk from the main campus and the city centre is about a 30 min walk - but there is the subway. and there is plenty of social life in the West End.

There is one set of halls which is much more "party" than the others but the halls dd was in last year the student support staff regularly came to "close down" parties .

Those of you wondering about Bristol's huge Widening Participation list, as I suspected from my student days, it looks like they are trying to shift their private/state balance. A Telegraph article has them 3rd highest for private school intake after Oxford and St Andrews.

dd's tutor hasn't started her reference yet.

In better news she got an A for her EPQ (needs to go to moderation but it's near the top of the grade so fingers crossed it won't go down). That means the offers for the two high grade courses should go down a grade (

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 05/11/2018 12:36

That's great news Laniakea - well done to your DD. DS did an 'unofficial' EPQ (not externally verified) at the end of Year 12 which was presented to his peer group at school.

So DD's UCAS went in Thursday and she had an offer on friday, sunday and yay first choice UEA today!!
The offers do seem to be coming really fast-
although she has a friend who got an offer from Bristol and then they said actually (or something to this effect) we're going to hold off and see so now she's a maybe.
I didn't realise that was a thing.
She also has friends who are getting letters to say offers in february Shock

Monkey yeah, I think it must be that too - but they've been giving out their contextual offers for years, it's clearly a slow process Grin

Laniakea brilliant, well done her Flowers

mumsie fab, she must be happy!

AHHHHHHH!!!
Can't really tell anyone IRL because it's mocks etc but
DD UEA has been upgraded to Unconditional!!!!
SO happy!!! She was really feeling exam pressure so this just lets her breathe and focus-
There have been tears...

Report
LIZS · 06/11/2018 08:21

That is good news. For some unconditionals can be a real plus. Do they offer incentives if you still achieve the original offer or predicted grades?
