Best ex-poly Universities?

So DS is looking at choosing an insurance universit. What are the top 5 from the ex polys in your opinion across the board? I don’t want to name any yet as it will skew things a bit.

Last but not the least, wish there was a poll function on MN.

Difficult! Because they did such different things.

For across-the-board, then probably the only one i's definitely out on the list is Oxford Brooks. But if you could give some idea what subject area/s you have in mind, then then will be others to add.

Depends on the subject but I’d say Nottingham Trent, Coventry, and Oxford Brookes

I'd look at specific courses at the Unis under consideration, some lead on to excellent jobs with a great alumni network and other courses, even at great Unis don't really give you any advantage. Depends on the subject and what career might be suitable, for my subject, ex-Polys were the best places to go but the courses had varying reputations.

It’s computer science. My first go to was Oxford Brookes But I read some reviews on TSR about The Computing dept that really turned things on it’s head and not in a good Way. DS visited Coventry and hated it.

Huddersfield has gone from strength to strength.

Just looked at the subject in the Times Good University guide 2018. Of 106 universities, these ex-poly's were in the top 50:

University of West London
Nottingham Trent

Liverpool Hope, Aston, and Aberystwyth are also in the top 50 and though not ex-poly's, they may be easier for her to get into if she doesn't get the grades next week for her favoured choices.

I am glad you started this thread as there is no way my DS will get into a top 4- university (might get BCC if he starts doing any work). I have been trying to look into this myself lately! Trouble is, different league tables say different things and , although I am a teacher, my own knowledge is limited.

We send a lot of leavers to Nottingham Trent. Lincoln is increasingly highly regarded and I, too, have heard good things about Huddersfield. Not sure of your circumstances but Aberystwyth claims to do contextual offers.

What is The Oxford Brookes thing? I feel like there is hidden MN code about this one!

Dundee, by the way, which ahd definitley always been a university, has A level offers in line with most of the possibly more dubious new universities. that may be too far away. As a place, Dundee used to be a shithole but is apparently becoming very desirable (according to one of those articles committee written in the ST by people who have never been there anyway...)

I've been to a top 10 Uni and an ex-poly (OB fan here too), enjoyed the latter more. I thought it was better taught but I was older and more organised. It was very well connected to industry for my subject.

Problem with some Unis is that they are research Unis and prioritise that over undergrad teaching...

If you believe in league tables (which you shouldn't), Liverpool Hope is the highest-ranking post-92 for computer science.

Is there a particular reason why his insurance has to be a post-92? They don't necessarily have lower entry requirements than many pre-92s.

@Piggywaspushed - Dundee has probably the best medical school in the UK and an absolutely world-leading school of life sciences. Don't know what it's like for computer science, though.

Oxford Brookes has always been at the cutting edge for development of teaching & learning technologies, innovative approaches to learning, etc. I haven't been there myself but my daughter tells me the student accommodation is really well designed, too.

Dd is at Ox Brookes. Fab.

I think OBU is well regarded , too, but on MN recently I have come caross it being talked about in hushed tones, as if there is some terrible scandal....

Piggy - Well...your DS sounds like mine. We can't all be headed for Imperial! but at least go to the best they possibly can. I've also got my beady eye on Nottingham Trent, i've heard its quite good.

Oxford Brookes just doesn't sound great either online of through word of mouth for Computer science. There's a awful review on TSR from a student that really out me off from lectures being cancelled, rubbish programming software not used in industry etc. OB online information about Comp. science also seems rather dull. But the university overall seems one of the best of its category.

Yes, my DS may well be like yours , but I did mean there is no way he'll get into a top 40 university, not top 4! Oops. MN is getting to me...

I've never heard of Liverpool Hope, heard of Liverpoool John Moore, is it actually in Liverpool?
