Dd is in Year 12 studying English, Sociology and Spanish A Levels plus a BTEC in Performing Arts.

She's not sure what she wants to do career-wise but is considering an English degree which seems to be a good choice and will lead to lots of different careers.

How do you decide which university open days to go to? She's looking at Russell Group so do you just pick a few and go?

Feel a bit clueless about the whole process as she is my eldest!

What else can you combine with English?

Have a look at the UCAS website, I think you can select 'joint honours courses' - it might take a while to trawl through all the English courses but you'll get an idea of what she could combine it with and then take it from there. There will probably be some combinations she won't have considered and subjects that aren't taught at most schools -e.g. linguistics, art history, philosophy, Hispanic studies.

If she wants to convert to Law as a post grad, be very careful about first university. She needs one with a strong Law School so she can join in as much as possible with the Law undergrads. Also get into summer intern positions/mini pupillages etc.

I know that until recently (and it might have changed now) but the Bar Society had a very small milk round! Oxbridge and a couple of others! As the Law Conversion course is about £10,000, getting a training contract or scholarship to pay for that is important. The best universities churn out the majority of candidates that get the funding. Most of DDs lawyer friends went to very few universities: Oxbridge, Durham, Bristol, Warwick, UCL - you get the picture. It’s fiercely competitive so you have to compete!
