Hope you all find this - didn't realise I took 999! Whoops.

I expect our DCs are very different in that they don't half as much try to anticipate what their lives will be like as we do :). They're happy to go with the flow and to adjust as and when will be required.

swingofthings · 22/04/2018 12:32

Was just talking to DD and she said that they were told during the holder day that Manchester have Wednesday afternoon 'off' on their schedule for sport time and that it was the same at St George so it looks like there is an expectation of them engaging in some physical activity weekly.

mumsneedwine · 22/04/2018 12:47

All Unis have Weds afternoons allocated to sports. Otherwise they'd never be able to play each other. Was the same in the1980s when I went

mumsneedwine · 22/04/2018 13:25

The pubs were v full on Weds afternoons with the armchair sports fans 🍺

Hear Hear Movingmountains, Mumsneedwine, 2B1G, Specialted, Swingofthings et al, bring back the tone of our original (3) threads.

Our kids so far have only been interested in getting an interview, then getting an offer. Please let's not discuss whether they will get kicked out!
They have all proved their dedication to this process over the last 2/3 years (as have we) & I have no reason to doubt they won't continue to work their hardest & succeed. They need to be grounded & personable & they need time to have fun. Without that they will suffer mentally in what is possibly the toughest profession. But they will make good doctors. All different types of doctors. Some will be more focused on the science, research & ground breaking successes. Others will take care of the elderly, sick babies & children, the mentally ill & the socially disadvantaged on a day to day basis. Different things for different people. I believe that we, the original group of Mums all believe our kids can succeed in this endeavour & do all we can to support them.

We haven't been interested in discussing scores or results unless they have helped another's research in choosing a university. There was no competitiveness to our enquiries & offers of help.

We've been here purely to help our DCs make informed choices during a Year 12&13 and keep ourselves sane.

I have frequently referred to these ladies as my MN friends & their DCs (my DD laughs) and have been genuinely rooting for their successes throughout the year, irrespective of how my DD was doing in the process.

Can't be doing with the highbrow one-upmanship which seems to have migrated from the other (dead) thread into ours. Please calm down.
We are at risk of preventing future MNs & some recent additions who were entering the Yr12 dilemmas, from benefitting from our wisdom.

Let's just keep our kids well & get our kids there.

Enjoy your gin, wine, sunshine & outings to Spoons (I did know!).

Somerset some of us with slightly older DC are here not just to continue to learn about current procedures but also to offer insights whenever it seems relevant so I think there should be room for those parents too. There's a certain amount that can be added which is of value. I've found it interesting going through medical school vicariously and learned stuff about it I didn't know before. And, as we've seen, there's a good deal that's personal and weird and out of place on the thread, or anywhere in fact.

Oxfordmedic · 22/04/2018 17:34

I think our generation was less well prepared and knowledgeable about the realities of medicine than your DCs but even we learnt and matured during medical school and after. Whether your DCs will all make good doctors, time will tell but at least they want to be at this stage of their lives and have the potential to achieve it. That is something to celebrate.

IMO the strength of MN for threads like this is the plurality of anecdotes, experiences and support, rather like different pieces of jigsaw, making a whole picture. It is always useful to know a bit more about the future life at medical school from MNetters whose DCs are several years ahead.

Abra1de · 22/04/2018 17:47

My Birmingham medic child has played sport twice a week for both terms of this first year, getting back to Ranm’s post. Lots of second years in evidence too in sports clubs. They to play in medsoc teams which fit in better with their studies but some are doing university sport. When the clinical years start they drop away but some still show up. Especially for 🍷.

Movingmountains · 22/04/2018 20:46

SomersetS I applaud you! You have definitely kept me sane throughout this difficult process. Until I discovered the thread I thought I was the only one obsessively checking TSR and doing extensive research on each and every medical school - oh the joy of realising I was not alone! Since then I have delighted in everyone’s successes and felt huge amounts of sympathy and sadness for the rejections. I encourage all the y12 mums to have a thread exactly like this one, whereby it is supportive, sharing and somewhere to get advice when you need it x

specialted · 22/04/2018 20:55

Agree moving mountains! Was so relieved to find this thread when I felt like I was going through the process alone! Made me realise I wasn't going mad after all! So big thank you to you all for your support and encouragement .

mumsneedwine · 22/04/2018 21:33

Ditto ladies. You've all helped me stay a bit sane through this whole process. DD finds it funny we all chat

adrinkofwater · 22/04/2018 21:40

DD has just done a biology sample paper. She thought it was ok. Then she marked it with the mark scheme and it turned out that she didn't put the things in that they want. Sometimes she's too specific others not specific enough. She is feeling pretty discouraged just now.Sad
Does anyone know if there are sample answers available anywhere? She is doing OCR A.

specialted · 22/04/2018 21:42

Have you tried physicsmathstutor? DD says it has marking schemes for lots of papers

specialted · 22/04/2018 21:43

Actually sorry that's just marking schemes not sample answers

Movingmountains · 22/04/2018 21:44

Adrinkofwater - I can email you some sample answers for OCR for specimen papers and also some helpful advice for the higher tariff website. PM me your email and I’ll send them tomorrow

Movingmountains · 22/04/2018 21:44

That was supposed to say questions not website!!!

watfordmummy · 22/04/2018 21:46

Well done all, we started it with the mantra #justoneoffer remember that!! Wink

DS been working away today after playing his penultimate football match for his club, I on the other hand have been slepping round London watching my friend run the marathon... I'm knackered.

swingofthings · 23/04/2018 06:25

She is feeling pretty discouraged just now
Oh no, she needs to look at it that she is still in revising mode, so still learning and it's great that she is picking up that she is too specific in some areas and not in the other. What she is doing is exactly what teachers want them to do, that is go beyond learning the subject but also learning what they are expected to write down. So well done to your DD for having picked up what she needs to focus on to get top marks.

I join with the feeling that this thread has been very helpful and supportive and allow me to meet, albeit virtually, lovely and kind people who have been so supportive, so thank you.

peteneras · 23/04/2018 13:19

"Peteneras your DS sounds really dedicated to his chosen career, he deserves to do well."

Thank you, Oxfordmedic, for your kind words. DS indeed has done tremendously well - even surpassing my own expectations. First, scoring a BSc (1st Class) degree in a related medical subject the year before, followed by the MBBS (Distinction) last year of which

Ranm · 23/04/2018 13:37

Abra1de thats good to know that the Birmingham medics are able to work on their sports. Do you happen to know anyone who rejected a UCL offer for this or any other reason? I am still confused about the choice between UCL and Birmingham Shock

peteneras · 23/04/2018 13:41

"IMO the strength of MN for threads like this is the plurality of anecdotes, experiences and support, rather like different pieces of jigsaw, making a whole picture. It is always useful to know a bit more about the future life at medical school from MNetters whose DCs are several years ahead."

Well, that's what I thought but have refrained from coming in here for the last 2250 or so postings as a small group from here seems to have hijacked the thread from the OP and made it into a closed-shop private personal playground. They now dictate what they want to hear and who should post on this thread which I had mistaken for a worldwide public board and even poor OP him/herself has since disappeared without a trace.

Katisha · 23/04/2018 13:47

I'm the OP from thread 1 and I'm very much still here! Even if not a frequent poster. It's been enormously helpful

Abra1de · 23/04/2018 13:50

Ranm I can't answer that question but hope someone else can.

Hi Katisha!

specialted · 23/04/2018 13:53

Katisha, are you going to Nottingham offer holder day on wed? Did you get DS accommodation sorted?

biscuit2000 · 23/04/2018 14:39

Thank you for all your support so far which has been great!
May this thread and positive support continue to flourish as we continue on the journey of this year's application together.
