Interesting and worthwhile visit to UEA, very good turn out, they had to bring in extra seating to the lecture hall. Applicants went on their own day, including walking to the hospital, over the bridge and the river - all very scenic! A very excitable and passionate tour/talk by an anatomy lecturer who fired questions at them, etc. Parents asked endless and sorry but to my mind pointless questions about finance and admissions (all of which they could/should have found out before the whole process). Lots also worrying about not reaching the entry requirements and UEA explaining the 'dark arts' of how much to over offer by and that the only guaranteed places are to those with AAA. It was a shame the current fourth year student didn't get asked more from the student perspective.
Speaking to a few other parents most DCs had more than one offer, although DD said in her group that wasn't the case.
Only thing DD didn't like was the only accommodation that was open on the day, the dated but interesting Ziggurats - but she knows others are on offer and as we pointed out, 'don't let your room in the first year dictate your choice' - Hull accommodation is probably the best I have seen of any Uni, including those I visited with both boys.
I was also finally able to talk to someone about DDs eyesight issue, she declared in on UCAS but it has not been questioned, UEA confirmed she will need changes to the Ophthalmology part of the medicine course (you usually have to use both eyes to examine and she can't) and that she must speak to disability people right at the beginning and register with them. She was relieved because she told me she had been getting quite concerned about it. We did ask at SpecSavers.... despite their training and clear expertise they were not helpful, selling designer glasses was more important
DD also learnt about the advantages when applying for junior doctor posts of having done intercalation - she was told it bumps them up the deciles when added to exam scores. 50% intercalate at UEA which I think is similar to many others.
She will choose either HYMS or UEA as firm I think - course changes at Liverpool is putting them at the bottom on the list for DD now.
I spent a 40 mins wandering around the Sainsbury Centre - such a great space and collection. Didn't have time for the Roger Law annoyingly.
Sluj I am sure I will get back to you with a few more questions over the next week or two, thank you for your help so far.
