Looks like we need a new thread.

You OK kipper99? It looks like you’re answering four different threads in your posts. As for the old ‘if they can’t do admin, give up now’ trope, we had that in another thread about the horrors of admin - it was entertainingly wrong then, and it remains so now.

In terms of emotional support, I imagine most posters thought that was one of the duties of a parent, but I concede that everyone has different styles.

kipper99 · 15/09/2018 10:54

Hi HMC,
No idea about multiple threads . Re: admin- PS isn’t really admin.
Anyway, I was just coming from the perspective of a teacher and Oxbridge grad and was shocked by the level of parental involvement / worrying shown on this board, that’s all.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2018 11:18

I'm an unashamed fully paid up member of Overthinking Parents' Anonymous. Grin

Despite which, a year in from the proper members of this thread, DD has absolutely thrived, and competently survived the summer working away from the cocoons of home and college.

HesMyLobster · 15/09/2018 15:56

Kipper there are plenty of posters like you who like to shake their heads scornfully at the parents on here discussing the ins and outs of this process.

The truth is that being able to share the minutiae of the process with others in the same position, as well as our beloved experts who have been through it all before (some numerous times!) on threads like this enables us to support and advise our dc without driving them mad asking thousands of questions.

I'm not ashamed however of being an engaged and invested parent.

Errol I'm so pleased to hear your DD had such a good first year, and successful summer.

HesMyLobster · 15/09/2018 15:59

Heff has your DC heard anything about accommodation yet?! Confused

kipper99 · 15/09/2018 16:08
Wine Enjoy
ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2018 16:11

The parents on this thread are like swans, on the surface their DC see them smoothly gliding along, while furiously paddling under the surface.GrinGrin

Not really more of a duck myself.

Heffapotamus · 15/09/2018 17:21

Not yet Lobster - unless an email has been received and I haven't been told about it - which is not unlikely!

HesMyLobster · 15/09/2018 17:37

Haha, I was trying to stop myself from asking if DD has heard anything for the 5th consecutive day, so thought I'd ask you instead! Grin

Hubbleisback · 16/09/2018 23:36

Well said Lobster and Hingle. Far better to be over-invested in your children than indifferent.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/09/2018 22:22

Talking about college parents, dd is yet to hear who hers are yet. So she can't ask about moving in logistics. We were hoping for secret tips on how to avoid the restrictions on where to park.

OhTheRoses · 22/09/2018 08:16

Gosh it's all happening now and beginning to feel very real. DD really has to focus on her packing this week. She's happy with her room allocation and has met the girl she's sharing her set with on facebook. They had already been chatting so that was nice.

Just hope it all goes well for her.

HesMyLobster · 22/09/2018 09:52

DD leaves tomorrow for her pre- freshers week course.

She still has no info about room allocation or college parents etc.
It does feel a bit like jumping in with her eyes closed I think!

Justanothermile · 22/09/2018 10:02

Just popping in here to wish your DC the very best of luck for the coming week.

DD is just starting the application process, and some of you have been kind enough to advise and comment, hence me posting. Smile

OhTheRoses · 22/09/2018 10:56

Would anyone like a new thread for support during their first term for our changing lives as well as theirs?

fiftyval · 22/09/2018 13:25

Lobster - Dr has only got her mother this week and 2 days ago got the dropping off details. She is going up for pre course Wednesday on her own and we are going Sat with all her stuff. Luckily a wide window of time as it is a 'hill' college. It's her birthday this Monday so packing will dominate that.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/09/2018 16:52

Thank you Mile :)

Good luck to your dd tomorrow Lobster.

@fiftyval (and I think also @YippeeTeenager ?) - my DD is going back on wed to help with the medwards 'flying start' which this year is the PhysNatScis are doing together with the engineers. She found it a nice intro last year.Smile

fiftyval · 23/09/2018 08:41

@ErrolTheDragon - then they are bound to meet as that is the one ds is on. She is hoping the room she gets is the one she will keep but they are not guaranteeing that. Thanks for all your help on this thread

Lucycat · 23/09/2018 09:33

Ive been having a good nosey on the FB page as to just how much 'stuff' their DDs and DSs are taking to Uni 😮 we are trying to be minimalist here - taking stuff out of packaging and only a couple of pieces of cutlery etc. DD can leave one box at Uni over the holidays but I don't think it's very big. Her college parents have been useful as has her college siblings in terms of questions.
OYBBK has anyone else on your DDs Facebook group got any useful contacts to help answer questions?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/09/2018 15:41

ah it's all a bit pear shaped here Lucy. Having to go via train instead now, so going all minimalist too. Though looking at it, it's not looking terribly minimalist....

OP posts:
OhTheRoses · 23/09/2018 16:05

What's happened oybk?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/09/2018 16:28

dh isn't able to come along and for medical reasons I can't do the drive.

OP posts:
OhTheRoses · 23/09/2018 16:34

Oh lorks. Are you far? If you are SW London and cam bound can we do a heavy bag? We are going up Thurs.

Lucycat · 23/09/2018 16:44

Oh no OYBBK that's not good 😟 have you thought about using a company like this one? www.studentluggagedelivery.com/ at least to get any heavy/ bulky stuff delivered? I'm thinking kettle, mugs, duvet, bedding etc
