Anyone have a child studying here? Has it changed a lot since 30 years ago - I had friends who went there who rated it highly as a vocational choice, but very good for the degrees it offered.

Has it altered massively with the expansion programme?

I am not going to say what course ds wants to do there; I supposed I am more interested in the general feel of the place and whether he would be happy with his fellow students/location. we live a hour away, it is convenient location wise for family, so not travelling down from the North or West or anything.

My DD had two friends that went there and graduated last summer. It is very popular with young people from London. One of DDs friends is intending to teach and the other one is a model - but she did that all the way through university.

I went there in the 1980s - the out of city campus at Wheatley - part time! I think it’s changed a lot and not least because it has much more property actually in Oxford now which is an advantage I think.

Get your DS to do an offer day to meet other students. I do not suppose anyone can help with that on here. He needs to have a good look at accommodation and teaching block for his subject. Then see if it’s for him!

Both my DS and DDIL have studied here recently. My DS's study was an add on to his degree. He doesn't rate the tutors or the general admin very highly at all.

My DDIL is in her last year of a full degree. She is slightly more complementary but thinks their pastoral care is rubbish!

Out of interest, what pastoral care do students expect? My DDs never accessed any or knew anyone who did.

My DD graduated from OB in summer 2016 - science degree. She loved it There! Brand new campus facilities, library etc and made some great friends. Being in Oxford- a centre of academic excellence - was a bonus. Some of the teaching was below par though.

Someone I know went there to do a Masters and left after a term as she felt the quality of the teaching and the administration were both appalling. She was an overseas student paying out an arm and a leg so got out as soon as she could.

I think it’s hugely sociable from what I hear. High percentage of independently educated doing subjects such as event management . Having said that I think for those types of vocational courses it’s very good . I wouldn’t know what it’s like for History or English though .

I would say be careful about some subjects there as it isn’t that highly rated. Of the old polytechnics though, it’s a very good one if you are not particularly academic and want vocational.

My dd went there. She had a great time but didn't learn much.

I went for ou tutorials there, the new building was lovely but the older classrooms over the road, not so much (if that is important to you).

DH looked at the Fine Art course there. It is VERY conceptual, almost to an extreme in his view, but then we only looked at one other course which was focused on the craft of art to the other extreme.

They are locally notorious for their poor administration but I have to say we didn't have problems in that regard - though dh rejected the place he was offered in the end.

Dd is in first year doing a humanities degree. She has very few hours contact time each week ( for a humanities degree that's probably true at just about any other university too) but she does say on the whole her lecturers are excellent, knowledgable and enthusiastic. Accommodation is expensive.

My son was very happy there (about 10 years ago) and said it was the best 3 years of his life! There was a lot of larking about in the shared houses but he got a 2.1 so he did some work as well and Oxford is a lovely city as I'm sure you know. He soon got a job too but he's into IT and there are jobs t be had but my grand-daughter is doing drama so lord only knows what she'll do with that but so many graduates don;t get jobs I'm not sure I'd advise anyone to go, what with the debt as well.

It is our DS's first choice for Paramedic Science.
He is also a rower and OB is excellent for rowing!

Dd is considering this for sports science. We are going to the open day on Saturday.
