Anyone's DC doing a Geography Degree?

DD is considering doing a Geography Degree, possibly in human or a mix of human and physical. If your DC is doing a Geography Degree, just wondering where they chose in the end, are they happy the course, student accommodation, area? We have good transport links, meaning there is such a fast choice in England and Wales.

Forgot to say her targets grades are three As. Her current assessments for work/tests are A* in geography, B in one and C in her other subject, so hard to know how much she'll improve in a year.

DSS is reading geography at Queens Belfast . It was his insurance on a BBB offer. His first choice was Newcastle but the offer was AAA and he didn't quite meet it. He loves Belfast though

It's quite a popular degree subject with young people in my area. With those predicted grades your dd should easily get offers from RG unis. I know girls studying at Liverpool, Southampton & Bristol who all like where they are. The courses do vary in emphasis so you obviously need to do research.

When I went to my 30th Anniversary reunion from my Geography degree we had :
several accountants
three university teachers
a college teacher
a couple of geography related company directors
a couple of non geog related company directors
a banker
three management consultants
an HR director
and the owner of a chain of nursing homes
and a guy who was very cagey about what he did so we reckon he's a hit man

forgot to say, we were all BSc Southampton

My ds is doing MA Geography and Environmental Science at Dundee Uni....he gets a £2000 bursary in first year as he's a non Scottish student ( we live in Wales)
Accommodation and cost of living is cheap
He's really enjoying the course so far and is considering a semester abroad next year ( either Canada or Germany!)
He did A levels in Geography , Biology and Physics as well as Welsh Bac
Got BCC and Pass at Welsh Bacc
I did MA Geography at Aberdeen Uni 35 yrs ago....then trained as a nurse!

Talkin’s list of professions there shows why it is a great degree to do. It seems to produce very employable graduates. (Geography teacher here and unashamed lover of all things geographical). I’m constantly banging on to my students about why they should study it further. And given the state of things at the moment, I can only see it becoming an even more important subject. So your daughter should go for it! There are some excellent geography departments out there, though definitely research the different modules as they can vary hugely depending on what staff they have. For example, I studied at Kings College London and I did a module on Japanese Culture at the same time as one on Geomorphology 🤯 loved every minute of it!

DS has just applied for a geography degree and got 5 offers.

He wanted a predominately human geography degree.

He researched a lot and we were amazed at how very very different they all are.

You really need to dig down for a geography degree and read about all the modules. He wants to join the army or work in climate change and found courses which offers modules relevant to both.

Agree it’s a gloriously diverse degree. I am a solicitor now but still use lots of knowledge from my degree in my work (planning and property)- geology, hydrology, sustainability, town planning, economics...

Friends from my course have become : development workers (for Oxfam and similar), surveyors, lecturers, teachers, lawyers..

Have a look at the LSE degree. Human, with a slant towards developmental and economics. Several of my contemporaries forged good City careers by stressing they had studied at the LSE, without mentioning subject. Another wound up in the Foreign Office.

Entry requirements are 3 As. LSE never goes into clearing/adjustment and we have known someone recently who dropped a grade but still got his place.

London offers a different sort of University experience, which suits some.

I admit, I did my degree because I loved the subject.
I never intended to do anything Geography as a career.
And I haven't

We've yet to look around but DD wants to do human geography and has mentioned Bristol, Cardiff, LSE and Southampton.

WellI I met my husband while doing mine. Result! (But neither of us ended up in related careers).

Following with interest as DS is considering a human geography degree too. LSE wouldn't be ideal for him as we're London based and he really wants to go further afield.

DS did Geography at Southampton. Worked quite hard to select a course that offered both human and physical options. Had 5 offers at AAB, ABB, and BBB. Had Lancaster as reserve offer and would have been happy there.
He ended up doing mainly human in year 2 and 3 but did some physical as well, as well as the GPS stuff
At Soton you apply or either BA ( human ) or BSc ( physical) but can swop.
He is doing Accountancy , one of his Geographer mates works for a shipping line doing logistics. Friend of mine who did it works in housing.

My DSis did Geography and Economics at UCL and did not do much with it. Dropped out of PGCE and then did consumer advice Work which wasn’t grad entry. A very good friend did Geography at UCL and is now a Town Planner. Ditto quite a few Geographers we know! Others are Surveyors, teachers and a college lecturer (but not in Geography). I think it’s best to go to the university that wants the highest grades of A level if you can because the employability from some universities isn’t that great. Knowing what you want to do afterwards also seems to help!

My child 2 did it (BSc as did science A levels) and is a London lawyer. She loved the subject and the degree.
