Continuing the previous thread.

Exams, assessments, essays, etc.

Support, or lack of it.

Will they all get accommodation for next year and can they cook a balanced meal yet.

Horse it was my DS' birthday this week too and it was weird seeing photos on Facebook but not seeing him in real life. Birmingham doesn't seem to be on strike so he has lectures/seminars as normal.

RedHelenB · 22/02/2018 16:04

It feels awful not having them around for their birthdays Horse. Dd passed her first essay so can celebrate at the dental balk this weekend.

Horsemad · 22/02/2018 18:01

How can it be a year since his 18th? Shock That has gone so bloomin' quick, scary!

He's had a good day, one lecture was on and he heard he'd got a 2.1 in his exams so he's happy Smile

Off out to celebrate tonight and home tomorrow Grin

Horsemad · 22/02/2018 18:02

Well Done to your DD RedHelen, bet she'll enjoy that Ball! Smile

RedHelenB · 22/02/2018 18:49

Well done on your sons exam results Horsemad!

Do2Little · 22/02/2018 20:37

Look at this article! Handing out leaflets is one thing but this is wrong.

RedHelenB · 22/02/2018 21:28

Not really sure why explaining why they are asking for support is wrong?

Do2Little · 22/02/2018 21:51

She seemed to feel hassled. What feels like 'explaining' from one persons point of view might feel like intimidation.

From that BBC news article it does seem a bit of a stressful mess in some places.

I'm OK with my daughter missing lectures and lab time if her lectures are cancelled (don't know how she feels about it) but if they are happening then she should be freely able to go to them and not have to battle across some picket line.

I think industrial action certainly has it's place. Many of our rights and freedoms are hard faught..
But plans should be put in place to minimise disruption or any distress or disadvantage to students.
I think they should be given some clear indications of what is expected of them, and how they should best manage their time and continue their studies in the circumstances.

Someone recorded it. It seems to me that the guy was in the wrong for turning violent and the chanting group were in the wrong for disrupting the lecture & winding everyone up. I felt sorry for the students in the lecture hall who just wanted to study.

I think they should be given some clear indications of what is expected of them, and how they should best manage their time and continue their studies in the circumstances.

And the vast majority of lecturers will have done precisely this - left detailed materials for self-study on virtual learning environments, left guidance for students on how to work through them, perhaps even left pre-recorded lectures for students.

A big chunk of students won't bother to do any of this work, the same ones who don't show up for contact hours anyhow.

Sorry - Proud Mum post coming up - I had an annoyed DS phone me today - exam results day- he only got 57 in his economics exam, which meant he only just got a 1st overall in his exams ( overall average 72).

I may have shed a tear as he’s worked hard to get here, and I shed a few more tears when I wished I could tell my mum, she would be thrilled with him. ( she died 18 months ago of aggressive ovarian cancer).

He was in mood to chat and was telling me that out of an intake of 25, he knows of 5 who have failed at least 1 exam and 2 others who have also got 1sts. Sounds about an average distribution?

RedHelenB · 23/02/2018 21:12

Well done Eves son!

HSMMaCM · 23/02/2018 21:12

Excellent news Eve. DD phoned today (she never phones), to say she passed an exam she thought she had failed because she didn't revise properly. She is starting the countdown to end of year 1 already!

I think my Dd would love this year to carry on forever, just as well considering she's doing a 5 year degree!

Horsemad · 24/02/2018 08:19

Grin RedHelen!

DS home for the weekend 😊

JugglingFromHereToThere · 24/02/2018 11:41

Well done Eve's DS! I was delighted and slightly surprised that DD also managed to come in with a first overall in her first January exams.
What a great start for them both!

Eve · 25/02/2018 19:44

Just so that I have something to worry about - now worrying if he’s putting himself under too much pressure! 😁

JugglingFromHereToThere · 25/02/2018 19:51

I got the impression they were trying to be encouraging with these first January exams - DD's were all multiple choice for example, and for once she found she had enough time and didn't feel under too much time pressure.
But still really nice that she did so well!

MorvahRising · 27/02/2018 00:21

DS has got his exam results and seems to have done pretty well; so chuffed for him as he worked incredibly hard. I’m not sure where the boundary for a first is, but he got in the 80s for three of the exams and in the 60s for the fourth so a pretty good effort. Well done to all who have their results; it’s lovely to hear how well so many of them have done.

His birthday was on a Saturday earlier this year and he came home for it which was lovely although a rather fleeting visit.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 27/02/2018 17:53

Well done Morvah's DS!
It's great to have these ones under their belt isn't it?

Eve · 27/02/2018 21:49

Well done to Morvahs DS! Great results

ono40 · 28/02/2018 11:44

Saw DS yesterday as I happened to be in Birmingham for a meeting so I took him out for dinner and brought him all the birthday cards that had arrived after he left (my family are very tardy). It was nice to give him a hug. Not much snow here today and school was open, much to DS2's disappointment.

Horsemad · 28/02/2018 11:49

Haven't heard from DS today but I gather the weather is quite bad up there. He is probably still in bed Hmm

Auntpetunia2015 · 01/03/2018 06:54

Had DS on text last night moaning about the snow but also wanting to arrange to take me out for a meal to meet his new girlfriend!...erm..this despite me telling him to keep away from girls for the next 4 years as they’re too much of a distraction!!
