Continuing the previous thread.

Exams, assessments, essays, etc.

Support, or lack of it.

Will they all get accommodation for next year and can they cook a balanced meal yet.

Ya boo.
Had planned to see DS1 tomorrow, just for fri and sat, but I've decided to cancel cos of the snow.
I'm in Essex and he's in Southampton.

I will silk instead.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 01/03/2018 07:24

SULK 😑

MorvahRising · 01/03/2018 08:42

TheOrigRights DS is also in Southampton and is peeved as they haven’t had any snow, but you must be a bit inundated in Essex. Sensible not to travel but a shame for you.

HSMMaCM · 01/03/2018 09:33

Biggest crisis of DD's uni so far. The long drive cannot be cleared and the ASDA delivery due for her house today will not be coming. Too far to walk to a shop. They will need to rely on their tins wits.

OP posts:
HSMMaCM · 01/03/2018 09:34

Also the internet is down and there's never a phone signal anyway.

Expect DD will be getting snow in Swansea. Hopefully they have some provisions in, and there is a small shop nearby.

Horsemad · 01/03/2018 10:41

DS said a lot of shops have closed where he is, 'but the food shops are open so it's all ok'!!

MorvahRising · 01/03/2018 12:59

HSMMacM Grin

DS in Southampton has had a university-wide phone message to say they are activating their emergency alert system in case they have to close because of heavy snow! I didn’t think they were due to get much down there.

bigTillyMint · 01/03/2018 13:46

AuntP, that's lovely that he wants you to meet her.

DD has a bad cold and has got an extension for her essays but is planning to brave the snow and go to the library....

bigTillyMint · 01/03/2018 13:47

Does closing just mean no lectures? Or would other stuff be closed too? What If they are in catered?

HSMMaCM · 01/03/2018 14:22

DD's have announced today they're closed until at least Monday. She phoned to ask a question and got voicemail. She phoned me looking for sympathy and I'm afraid I told her there were people a lot worse off than her. I think I was supposed to send her father 90 miles in his 4x4 with supplies Grin.

Ds Uni is open....e mail to say library open and a majority of lectures still on - he's at Dundee , so used to bad winters although it's bitterly cold and some snow( less because it's on the coast) but roads/ pavements like ice rinks ...he's got a 1 Mile walk to lectures wonder what's the likelihood of him actually making it to lectures though

I was Aberdeen Uni in 86 when the temperature got down to - 20 ( and -26 in Braemar) , we had ice on the inside of windows, a 2 bar fire in the lounge was the only source of heat, and 2 xtog 15 duvets on the bed --so he'll get no sympathy from me if he says he's cold--

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 01/03/2018 19:49

DS txt to say uni closed tomorrow.

bigTillyMint · 02/03/2018 07:42

Lol Really, ice on the inside of windows was an everyday occurrence when I was a child growing up in the 60s and 70s - no central heating in those days, though I don't think it was -20! And no duvets, just blankets, so well prepared for student life in the 80s Grin

ono40 · 02/03/2018 11:12

When I was at uni and living in private accommodation the (indoor) toilet froze as did the washing up in the sink. We had one gas fire to heat the whole house and no running hot water. Obviously the pipes burst and flooded the place and the ceiling collapsed so we had to move back into toasty warm halls. DS did try telling me it was so cold that he had to buy a hot water bottle but I gave him short shrift. He only has one lecture on a Friday but I expect he will lie in bed and watch it on catch up.

MorvahRising · 02/03/2018 12:46

I remember in my second year student house when the heating went wrong in a horrendously cold week - we all huddled in the kitchen working with the oven on full and the oven door open! I was going to bed in pyjamas, two jumpers and two pairs of socks and there was damp all over the bedroom wall which kept getting muck on the duvet. And there was no heating in the bathroom! Don’t remember having many baths that week . . . . .

Horsemad · 02/03/2018 16:36

Haven't ever suffered student accommodation but like bTM, can remember ice on the inside of the windows before we had central heating fitted!

ono40 · 05/03/2018 19:21

DS: Mum can you post me my prom suit, there's a ball on Thursday
Me: couldn't you have asked me to bring it last week when I saw you?
DS: I didn't think
Me: (Resists urge to say 'you never do') Oh well, you'll have to borrow one

Seriously? Just when I think the boy is an adult.....

Haffdonga · 05/03/2018 19:29

You could charge him the postage Ono ? That'll learn him.

Mind you, I posted ds the earphones he left behind on his last visit and managed to underpay the postage. DS was not impressed. He sent a photo of the fee notification and single word message Mate! .

Reallycantbebothered · 05/03/2018 21:29

ono My ds was exactly the same last term- got phone call on wed evening ‘ can you send me my dj, got a ball on Saturday... in Oxford, where his gf is- 300 miles form where he’s at uni and 250 from where we live ... sent it next day delivery to his gf halls for £25!!... then he said it ‘felt funny ‘ . Turns out he’s grown a bit since it was bought for lower 6th prom and his chest is now 38 in ... he managed to wear it on this occasion but bought him a new suit after Christmas... which he took back with him Hmm

MorvahRising · 05/03/2018 22:00

When DS left for university in September I tried to persuade him to take his walking boots, just in case, but no, he was quite sure he wouldn’t need them. Naturally, one of the very first things he signed up for was a long walk in the New Forest. It cost a fortune to post them, as he has rather large feet. 🙄

Eve · 06/03/2018 11:56

2 weeks til end of term and he’s home for easter!

This one has gone very quick, seems like only a few weeks lectures after exams.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/03/2018 14:57

DD said she'd be home for Easter, and her birthday, but has organised a couple of trips with friends first before we get to see her!

But realising now that we'll have her home again for a nice long stay quite soon - though I guess there may be some work and revision to fit in.

She can keep DS company in that as he has GCSE's this summer

Do2Little · 06/03/2018 18:36

After THREE years I have finally been vindicated in telling dd to take her snow boots to the frozen north. Grin

bigTillyMint · 06/03/2018 18:53

DD says she might come home next week if the lecturers strike goes ahead - a full week of cancelled lectures.

Is it affecting other unis/students the same?
