Nottingham mix them up with others. but have medic parents to help ease them in . The halls on campus are all catered but the self catered accommodation is quite close .When I was a student at Nottingham the medics I knew were often the biggest party animals and mixed with the whole range of students present.BSMS also do the medic parent thing but limit the halls you can apply to as there the medics have different terms and only a couple of halls can accommodate this , however they can choose to be on either campus ,Sussex or Brighton .They are not medic only but often 4 or more in a flat will be medics so appreciate the need for quiet to study ( doesn’t stop them socialising at all ).My d went for self catering and has found it very manageable .

pixelchick10 · 21/02/2018 18:36

My DD (Cardiff) is in self-catered but that is the case with nearly all the accommodation. She’d prefer catered. She’s in a flat with students from a variety of courses but most of her friends are medics. Four of them (all girls, all medics) are sharing a house next year. She moved to this halls in the Taly student village from another complex - I think it’s quite noisy but she works in the library.

movednorth · 23/02/2018 12:57

Still hanging on in there, Baytreemum? Cardiff having a bit of a rest I think. Some rather unhelpful comments posted on TSR thread, not helping morale for those who wait. I have calmed down a bit. I think I ran out of adrenaline.

Hang in there Cardiff people - looks like it could go in for a few more days. I know how you feel though, once one person gets one the stress starts to build. Fingers crossed.

Liverpool by end of March now seems ridiculously long.

Lovely Julian posted on TSR last night that Sheffield are in target for 7-10 March.

Movingmountains · 23/02/2018 16:30

SomersetS - we are also waiting on Sheffield and Liverpool - seems like so long away. Although the Bristol offer has at least stopped me from having a nervous breakdown! Not sure my nails could have taken the wait with no offers. Fingers crossed for Cardiff those still waiting. The system is so unfair!

muddlethro · 23/02/2018 16:55

Baytreemum and movednorth, really feel for you both and for your DC waiting for that first offer...! The clock-watching, the nervous anxious feelings in the pit of your stomach, it’s such an intense experience, and an agonising wait! I hope and pray for you both ( and others waiting for an offer) that one comes soon. The process is so long and drawn out, and it’s only those who’ve been through it, who really understand how tough it is.....😔. Hang on in there.....💕

booface · 23/02/2018 17:26

Echo what muddlethro said above. Can't say it any better really. We are waiting on Bristol and Newcastle, but are in the lucky position of having received good news over the last couple of weeks and that makes it very different. UCAS did update for us last Saturday, so you never know.. Hoping your DCs get the news they deserve very soon.

I really do think that they could reform this process, way upthread someone suggested an offer day when all medical schools come back with their offers. It really would cut out this awful wait....

movednorth · 23/02/2018 18:27

Thank you everyone, your warm vibes make me feel better. Except that now it's nearly 6.30 again ...

SomersetS · 23/02/2018 18:44

HYMS was all at 16:42. Its so odd they seem to have a specific time.

Another 6.30 has passed. The whole process has now become the elephant in the room. I worry in silence. DD worries in silence. Regular hugs say all there is to say. Baytreemum, we're in it together.

mumsneedwine · 24/02/2018 11:19

Me and DD went to the pub last night. Last interview is this Thursday and we just needed a night out together to laugh about it all. Still waiting to hear back from the other 3. 7th March could be the day for 2 of them but Liverpool looks like end of March. We don't talk about it but last night we planned a fab year out for her. 🍷to us all. Be all over soon - one way or another.

SomersetS · 24/02/2018 13:11

Shame we can't all meet together!

mumsneedwine · 24/02/2018 13:13

I expect that would be one very good night out 😁😁. Maybe if some of them end up
in the same place we can say hi. I'll be the very grey one

LoniceraJaponica · 24/02/2018 13:17

I think DD has decided to knock medicine on the head. As we don't expect a positive outcome from her Leicester interview we aren't holding our breath. DD is just concentrating on her A levels now.

Re Nottingham accommodation. DD has an offer from them for another subject, but is disappointed that the halls for 1st year students are catered. She is vegetarian and a good cook and doesn't really want to eat shit food for the first year. On an open day visit we were told that it was generally 3rd year and post grad students who were in self catered halls.

We looked at Notts accommodation - there is self catering accommodation for 1st year students. From memory the nearest ones would be on Broadgate Park. There is also another one called St Peter's Court which is newer but this is a bit further away (15 mins walk approx).

LoniceraJaponica · 24/02/2018 14:00

We didn't bother looking at any accommodation on any open days. I'm just repeating what a student told me, that 1st year students don't generally go into self catered accommodation.

Minikew · 24/02/2018 14:29

We went to two open days and on the second one we concentrated on the accommodation as DD did not want catered and were advised on the options. It might be worth contacting Notts to check re the allocation though. If your DD does choose another course it might be worth looking at Sheffield through UCAS extra or clearing - lots of fantastic self catered accommodation.

watfordmummy · 24/02/2018 17:14

@LoniceraJaponica funnily DS is now concentrating on his A levels too. Bless them xx

SomersetS · 24/02/2018 17:18

Lonicera we will all quietly hold our breath for a positive Leicester outcome. I think you never can tell but I understand how it seems better to presume the worst & look at PlanB. Fingers still crossed for you.

When we looked at Notts I'm certain we saw self catering accommodation for 1st years - and were advised against catered for medics in fact. There must be some.

They have Mr Mans Chinese outlet in their Union which is run by the best Chinese in Nottingham (& my favourite) - great for vegetarian dining out treats! Noodle city. It is a beautiful campus & fab city (I'm biased as I went their, way back in the olden days though it's changed a lot). Tram to Uni is a big big plus. New sports block is fantastic.

You would all recognise me - the fake redhead rocking in the corner, muttering to herself.

muddlethro · 24/02/2018 17:38

Watfordmummy, it’s great that your DS is managing to concentrate on his A levels...Smile. Which unis is he waiting to hear from...?

2B1Gmum · 24/02/2018 18:36

As I mentioned my ds1 was at Nottingham for engineering, he was catered but knew a crowd of medics in self catered at broadgate which is literally just outside the campus gates. Second year 90 per cent move into houses in Lenton. Vegetarians are of course catered for in catered accommodation but can’t comment on quality!

Thank you for that post Gendarme. I agree with what you have written.

I did suggest a lot of what you've said to my own DS, but he wasn't having any of it. All you can do as a parent is support them, whilst making it clear beforehand that there are lots of alternatives. I've also made it clear to my own DS that having a medicine degree doesn't mean there aren't alternative career paths, should he want to explore them .
