It's like that every year. No rhyme nor reason.
I did warn you all about Nottingham though......🙄

SomersetS · 15/02/2018 21:35

I couldn't fathom Notts scoring but Bham seemed straightforward. You put your data into their website & they gave you a number - greater than 7.5 & I thought you'd get an interview! Seems there's more to it.
All hail the simplicity of Sheffield.
It would be good to understand what they have done.

Mrsramsayscat · 15/02/2018 22:48

Good A level results and a gap year massively increase ones chances of a place.

A number of universities openly say that these are the students they would like to have. Also a gap year enables a person to acquire good quality experience without the worry of the competition for the time used.

comeinpax · 15/02/2018 23:31

Name changed for this. I think numbers applying are up by 1,500, according to UCAS. It's a low birth rate year, so could the economic climate have something to do with it? Job chances greater with medicine on graduating compared to other subjects?
My own alma mater turned DD down!
Was crushed and felt weirdly possessive as was looking forward to visiting the campus, looking at how it had changed, reminiscing, etc. Know it's totally irrational to feel that way. But was also heartened, in a way, that they didn't show any favouritism to former alumnus. I know some places do. It still hurt though!

pixelchick10 · 16/02/2018 00:52

Can I put this out there? I know it’s difficult but the best thing your children can do is concentrate on getting tip top A Level results - as we found that can open doors even into medicine on results day - without the grades the place is likely to be offered to someone else. The medicine course is extremely tough that’s why they want the top grades. They also really do work hard play hard. My DC got her place on results day (3 A*s) - we were all set for a gap year but now she is a first year medic and I moan about that empty nest syndrome. There is hope right to the end but you need the excellent A L results!

Woodenhillmum · 16/02/2018 07:07

1500 more applicants but 500 more places .
Couldn’t agree with pixelchick more about the resilience needed .

adrinkofwater · 16/02/2018 13:38

Any news yet from Edinburgh, movednorth?

movednorth · 16/02/2018 13:45

adrinkofwater, nothing yet. I'm refresh-fresh-freshing on TSR, as you can imagine. Offers are starting to dribble through, but mainly Scottish and other EU. Is anyone aware of any RUK offers/rejections in the last day or two? Are you also waiting for Edinburgh, adrinkofwater?

adrinkofwater · 16/02/2018 13:54

No. We're waiting for Cardiff, Bristol and Newcastle. Waiting to leave parents in law's house and making the most of the WiFi! So just wondered if you'd heard. Not expecting to hear from any of ours today, and knew you were waiting!

comeinpax · 16/02/2018 13:55

When DD has rung admissions, she's reported quite an icy reception compared to that encountered at the initial enquiry stage. Indicative of lots of complaints received perhaps?

movednorth · 16/02/2018 13:55

Thank you for thinking of us, adrinkofwater! Cardiff by the end of the month! Safe journey home.

RedHelenB · 16/02/2018 14:00

As regards firm and insurance, my dd for dentistry got offered a place at her insurance even though she only had the B in chemistry and the offer said A. She met her firm offer though so went there.

comeinpax · 16/02/2018 14:02

DD says Lancaster and Newcastle top on customer relations front. Both been brilliant at all stages. Can't do enough to calm anxieties, give as much info as poss.

Movingmountains · 16/02/2018 20:49

LoniceraJaponica how did the interview go? Fingers crossed it went well.

LoniceraJaponica · 16/02/2018 21:34

Not great Movingmountains Sad. DD lacks self confidence. I hope she is mentally prepared for a rejection.

Thank you for asking

Well you never know Lonicera she might have done better than she thinks. You can't tell with MMIs. Fingers crossed for good news

LoniceraJaponica · 16/02/2018 22:27

Thank you Movingmountains

Are all the interviews over? DD had Liverpool on Thursday and I think it was their last week. No info given at the end but I believe they won't hear anything until end of March/beginning of April.

I did get the coffee and cake vouchers mumsneedwine, but coincidentally had planned to visit the museum (where the free coffee was); it is the original university building, the Red Brick that the name comes from, now known as the Victoria Museum, a very decorative Victorian building both inside and out. I got so carried away looking round, from art to particle physics (understood about 10%) that when I got back down to the cafe it was closed due a function being set up! Interesting fact about the university, in 1880s half the students were women Smile, but at that point they couldn't study medicine as it was thought they would find it too distressing! Although I believe they were one of the first to change their minds and admit women.

mumsneedwine · 17/02/2018 10:57

One more interview to go here - 1st March at Southampton. Know Bristol and Nottingham still interviewing too. Feels like it's being going on forever here as first interview was 14th December. Offers/rejections will all be in March I think so that's going to be horrible. Lots of 🍷

I remembered after I posted DD's school friend has one more interview, the difference in timing of interviews and offers does make this process very drawn out. I suppose there are Pros and Cons . Good luck to those with interviews still to come - at least you might have a sunny day for travelling!

mumsneedwine · 17/02/2018 11:14

Southampton is a day trip so me and DD are going shopping and for lunch after her early interview. Fortunately on my day off so we can have a girlie day. Good luck to all our wonderful kids who want to spend their lives looking after others. We are proud of them all ThanksThanks

movednorth · 17/02/2018 11:24

Yes, mumsneedwine, very proud indeed. Well done to them all for their hard work so far.

sunflower1209 · 17/02/2018 11:33

Edinburgh have started giving out offers to UK undergrads! Wasn't prepared for this on a weekend, but a very happy house here.
