I think it was around £40, it cost more because it wasn't just GCSE certificates but A' Level too.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/02/2018 20:30

Thank you Waiting

Great news adrinkofwater and booface. Let more offers come in in the next couple of weeks.

Good luck to the Liverpool and other interview next week.

2B1Gmum, I think you are doing the right thing letting your DD decide for herself what is right. She clearly weighted the + and - of not going to Manchester and made a rational decision. I can totally see her point that she's already got one offer somewhere where she knows she'd be happy, and that it is better to focus all her energy on the one other that would make her happy rather than potentially compromise this interview by dedicating efforts on a choice that doesn't really matter much.

DD is still waiting to hear from Bristol, rejections pre-interview are now coming in fast, so who knows. In November, she would have been over the moon getting an invite, but I think she now feels similar to your DD about Manchester. Her focus has now moved from interview to studies as she got a poor grade at one exam and it made her realise that her priority now needs to be her A levels.

I agree that we have to trust their decision, and that process is part of the transition of letting them go into adulthood.

Hi everyone! I'm back, after a stressful few weeks. DD has still not had results of brain scan, I'm working on no news is good news. She is seeing someone who useds CBT for pain management, she has sort of resolved herself that this will be an on going issue, just frustrating that no one can give her a diagnosis. Been catching up with all the news, some good - so congratulations, some not so good - hold on to hope. My daughters head of year said that medicine is a 2 year cycle. Interview at Cardiff was hard and odd and she had a pre interview rejection from Bristol. She isn't worried about that, I'm not even sure why she put it down! So, I'm here to share the pain and glory. I've missed you all. xxx

LoniceraJaponica · 10/02/2018 15:31

I hope she is OK Mommymoomitzi Flowers

Been wondering how your DD is mommy moomitzi. Hope you hear something soon.

Mommymoomitzi · 10/02/2018 15:55

Thank you Lonicera. Adrinkofwater, she is just fed up with feeling ill. Doing NMR for Chemistry today. i haven't been able to help her since year 6! Will keep you updated. Cardiff offers maybe out this week??? It's just a big waiting game now, for all of us. Any other offers due out soon?

2B1Gmum · 10/02/2018 16:19

Mommy, good to hear from you we were concerned and let’s hope no news good news, although an answer and solution very much needed too. Such a tough one, could be food related? My ds1 had horrid headaches/migraines turns out he has a high billirubens count (sorry can’t spell it) so gets hang over type dehydration headaches. He gave up alcohol at 19 - never was a big drinker - and drinks two litres of water a day. Blood tests would show this up. Just one of many strange but treatable causes. Fingers crossed for your dd.

swingofthings · 10/02/2018 17:45

So please to see you back Mommy xx

movednorth · 10/02/2018 17:49

Hello Mommymoomitzi, you've really been having a scary time! We're waiting for Cardiff in our house too. Edinburgh as well, which may also be out this week. I am having nightmares about two lots of bad news on one day. I am TRYING to be more optimistic and consider the possibility of two OFFERS on one day...

Mommymoomitzi · 10/02/2018 22:12

Thank you ladies! It feels good to be back in the fold. I'm just drinking a Bombay Blue and Elderflower tonic. I have drunk a considerable amount of Bombay Blue of late. Chin chin x

watfordmummy · 10/02/2018 22:34

@Mommymoomitzi it's ok I'm on the Winetonight.

So scared, but want to know Smile

Mommymoomitzi · 10/02/2018 22:36

Watfordmummy - it helps and we need help. Enjoy my friend 👍

SomersetS · 10/02/2018 23:14

Mommymoomitz try Brockmans - with Indian tonic & a couple of blueberries - 1 of your 5 a day - it's my current favourite!

2B1Gmum · 11/02/2018 09:13

Like all the G&T suggestions - just bought a bargain 1 litre Bombay from Tesco, need to try some of the new tonics and fruit additions clearly Smile
On Gap Years, planned or otherwise, my DS2 took an unplanned Gap Year, and it was the best thing for him. He had fractured his right thumb first term of A2s, for him the worst of it being he was unable to play rugby, but of course he couldn't write either - three essay subjects so that was tough! He finally got to play rugby after 5 months (and for Wasps U19s), but he had a long way to go on his fitness. He missed his A* that was needed for English at Bristol - and they wouldn't consider him even though he had a Distinction in his PreU History (plus AA at A2 and AA at AS). he rethought his plans and decided to change course to Politics and Philosophy. During his gap year he was able to have driving lessons (again fracture put stop to that), look at a couple of other universities for Politicis and Philosophy, including Durham that he eventually chose and loves; he got some bar work and played rugby for very high level non professional club, including a trip to Jersey and winning two awards at the end of Season. His confidence grew and best of all I got to spend time with him. Without the pressure of sixth form, essay writing and revision he was so much nicer to be around!. I think we got closer, his sense of humour returned and he helped with shopping and cooking! The only downside was how much I missed him we he went off to Durham early for pre season rugby training Sad.

The pressure of sixth form is exhausting, so whether it is a case of making the most of the summer months or taking the whole year, a break, a change of scene, sport - whatever helps relieve the stress is vital.
Off to work soon, working with a lovely girl in a local sixth form, she going through similar trials for Art, one early rejection, an interview yesterday, sending electronic portfolios etc. One offer so far, one not even acknowledged her application!. She needs A in Art and As or Bs in English Lit and Psychology! She is managing to smile still, well at work anyway!

Stevie3 · 11/02/2018 12:48

Heehee live all the talk about gin - my fave at the moment Opihr lovely and spicy for cold winter months 😊 hope there's good news for all waiting on it this week
Mommy so sorry to hear of your DD, must be worrying - some NHS trusts have 'headache clinics' where they are v understandable about headache treatments if investigations have ruled out any specifics. As a really helpful treatment we use the white tiger balm - seems to work well even for migraine like headaches and no side effects. Hope things get sorted/settle soon.

movednorth · 11/02/2018 14:39

A large wine glass, with (any old) gin, pink grapefruit juice and plenty of ice. Thoroughly recommend it!

Mrsramsayscat · 11/02/2018 14:57

I have a lot of empathy with those of you with children still waiting for offers, as I know what it feels like to have a child going through this process.

It was said to my DS last year that if you really want to do medicine, you probably will. Maybe not always this year, but that has huge advantages too. Even people who don't quite make the grades usually become doctors eventually, providing they really want to. And people with the grades but no offers can also get in at clearing, where universities are struggling to interview far fewer people in order to fill posts which have become free for a variety of reasons- poor grades, changes of heart , sudden plans for gaps years.

Good luck to all of you.

Minikew · 11/02/2018 15:03

I wonder how clearing works for medicine. Do Unis only offer places to those already interviewed for their course or do they just start again and look at all applications received via clearing?

2B1Gmum · 11/02/2018 15:13

Minikew, a friends DD got in on clearing for medicine four years ago, having achieved really high grades, I am certain her place was not from a medical school she had been interviewed at, but was from phoning round and presume some help from her school. Apparently the universities get the results a day or two (?) before the schools so clearing places become available literally the day of results. Usually some of the newspapers (The Times) get lists but I would also suggest specialist websites like Medic Portal would have information. It is then about getting on the phone really quickly. Not as easy as other subjects of course, but it can happen.

Minikew · 11/02/2018 15:32

@2B1Gmum - thanks 😉

Waitingforsherlock · 11/02/2018 18:03

Leicester, Sheffield and St George's were in Clearing in 2017. I'm not sure about any of others. You need to be persistent and have your wits about you. Ringing early is important.. Interviews were held on the Friday and Monday and Tuesday after results day I believe, so you have to be able to drop everything at short notice.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/02/2018 18:18

It's good to hear about clearing.

biscuit2000 · 11/02/2018 18:29

We love a Bombay too ! DH and I have gin Thursdays and enjoy a Laverstoke after Laverstoke Mill where it's made! 50ml gin 25ml each of vermouth & elderflower cordial & 100 ginger ale.
@Mommy good to see you back and hope you get resolution soon.
The posts about successful forced gap years are reassuring. Ahead of the imminent Cardiff decision I've been having the no offer conversation with DD. Tears - she sees it as a waste of a year and finding it hard especially this week as 4 peers got offers for Nottingham when she was rejected pre-interview and wondering what's wrong with her! I've said a gap year would give her opportunities to do things she wouldn't be able to do and has the bonus I get to keep her for another year. She knows it's all about the grades so is determined irrespective of the interview outcomes.
Good luck to all those waiting for offers. My challenge this week is to resist from constant checking of mumsnet and TSR. It will be what it will be🤞🤞🤞

biscuit2000 · 11/02/2018 18:36

@ Sherlock very informative thank you. Was wondering if anyone has any experience of getting accommodation after clearing? Getting a place on a course may be just the first hurdle?
