2B1GMum - My DS1 is at Manchester (not medicine) and lives with 2 girls studying medicine. It is a lovely city and they really rate their course. The university is lovely and has the advantage that accommodation is very cheap - first year in halls was only £4000. My DS1 loves it so much he wants to stay in Manchester. My best friend did medicine along time ago there and she loved it - hospital placements were local but it also had the advantage of being large conurbation so lots of specialities. I would say it is worth a look at. I can't recommend the city highly enough. My DS2 regrets not applying there but didn't as he said he didn't just want to follow his brother.

DDs three interviews were in March. She only heard about two in late January and did not have any offers till end March/early April.

We talked a lot about the things she could do in a gap year, and how it would be a great chance to do something different before she started years of training. Not getting a place first time round would not matter.

Yr 13 really ground her down. She found it difficult to lift herself for the A level exams themselves, and performed someway below predictions. (Luckily predictions were high.) She also picked up a nasty virus before her last exam, but had to sit it, even though she was barely capable of getting out of bed.

It was a tough year. (She had been seriously ill at the start as had her dad.) So I was not surprised that once the offer came in, she wrote asking if she could defer.

One surprise advantage is that after a year away from studying she is enjoying being back. In contrast a few or her peers seem to have suffered a first term slump. Yr13 was tough and so having got in, it has been difficult for them to raise their game straight away to cope with new demands of an intensive course.

My daughter suffered a big mid-term slump last year (around week five). I think she was still burned out from A levels. She was weepy and low, saying she was going to have to drop out. Fortunately her first med school exam results and assessments reassured her, but it was yet another one of those road-to-becoming-a-doctor tough periods. She seems fine now. It doesn’t end when they get their place. A GP friend of mine told me our daughter would need a lot of love and support for years to come.

"So she’ll hit the admissions process next year all guns blazing with excellent results and a knowledge of how it all works and be one of those very confident gap-year applicants"

Yes, that's the plan plus, hopefully, she will have a lot more medical work experience under her belt.

Thanks for the nice wishes. I hope all of our DS and DDs are soon sorted. My DS has an interview right after half term in Newcastle FAR FAR from us! I think getting far away from home is an attraction to him rather than the nuisance it will be to us on moving in and out days!

SomersetS · 09/02/2018 17:24

Happy Half Term everyone. Hope you & your DCs get a chance to recharge your batteries for a few days.
I think we all deserve it.

Rather hope we get snowed in - that always makes everything stop.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/02/2018 17:41

Shit. Just seen on DD's medicine interview application that she should have had copies of her certificates endorsed. Will have to pay a solicitor £££ on Monday to get this done as school is now closed for half term.

I wish DD would check things properly!

Lonicera One day you will both look back at these few months and smile.......

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2018 17:45

Lonicera email school. Teachers will still be going in next week (it is true we do not have holidays in holidays 😁). If it was me I'd happily make sure I could endorse her certificates - and exams might be in too as it's deadline for SEN.

adrinkofwater · 09/02/2018 18:09

We had good news today. DD has an offer from LeicesterGrin! So happy and relieved! She definitely feels that it was her best interview. Hope everyone else has good news soon.

specialted · 09/02/2018 18:16

Great news adrinkofwater and boo face! Congrats to your DC.
Such a relief!

muddlethro · 09/02/2018 18:22

Huge congratulations adrinkofwater 😊. Is this your DD’s first offer too...?

adrinkofwater · 09/02/2018 18:26

Yes, 1st offer!

muddlethro · 09/02/2018 18:32

Such a huge relief! Have a wonderful, and restful weekend! 😊

Abra1de · 09/02/2018 18:42

Hurrah, adrink!

SomersetS · 09/02/2018 18:50

Lonicera - oh no - DD turn up at school on Monday on the off chance or email her favourite teacher? Or do you know any solicitors? Has she done the poster?

Adrinkofwater Fantastic News. Wow. Think my DD will be firming Leicester too.

2B1Gmum · 09/02/2018 19:08

drinkofwater - fab news, have a lovely evening with your DD - great way to start half term.

Lonicera, I hope you get is sorted soon, there is a way (tell your DD you can do it and not to worry).

After a brief but serious conversation with DD, she pressed the button and has cancelled Manchester, she feels she will be slightly less stressed for Liverpool now. I think a few have Liverpool next week - good luck to all - I am hoping I have time to pop into the Tate this time!

I was keen for it to be her decision, my parents made all my decisions and took no notice whatsoever of my views and I vowed I wouldn't do that for my DCs, I don't want them falling out with me the way I did with mine over it! Water under the bridge now of course...

LoniceraJaponica · 09/02/2018 19:36

Congratulations to your DD drinkofwater

I have emailed school and will ring them first thing on Monday. I wish DD paid more attention to stuff like this.

Adrink 🍾🍾great news!!
Lonicera you made me double check the Liverpool info - these things happen and there's always a way - Liverpool say if you don't bring documents you have a weeks grace to email them in, I'm sure Leicester is similar if it comes to that.

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2018 19:42

Lonicera the copies only need to be certified if you don't have the originals. My DD said you have to hand in originals and they check them while being interviewed and they leave the copies. Hope that helps.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/02/2018 19:59

Oh thank you mumneedswine and Stevie3

Result Mumsneedwine! Good spot.

Waitingforsherlock · 09/02/2018 20:12

Lonicera my DS made a same day appointment with a local solicitor who then copied and signed them for him there and then. I don't think Leicester wanted originals.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/02/2018 20:14

How much did it cost Waiting?

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2018 20:15

If it helps Liverpool couldn't care less about AS level certs. They only cared about DDs GCSE ones.
