I would normally advocate honestly. However so much of the process seems to involve an element of luck that I am not so sure. I think it is something he needs to figure out. Hopefully he will get another, less risky, offer soon.

If he does not and he reconciles himself to a reapplication, he could send a careful email pointing out the error perhaps putting him in a good position come August or next year.

2B1Gmum · 07/02/2018 11:06

mumsneedwine re. your dilemma, I feel for the friend and your DD too, sounds like an UCAS mistake but quite how who knows? As SomersetS says I would suggest going they talk to head of sixth form or UCAS person (some schools have a dedicated member of staff who deals with applications). I suspect if it is UCAS, it will result in a very sorry and a quick withdrawal of the offer, however, if it was the Uni I would have the thought the very least they could do would be offer some sort of interview or a personalised apology. Does this student have any other still pending?

I hope it gets sorted soon and that in the meantime your DD has some positive news soon. When do Liverpool let people know? Did they give details of offer holder day at the debrief?

peteneras · 07/02/2018 11:16

"It's not just about being caught up and the implication of it . . .Who knows what the repercussion could be of her saying nothing. . ."

For all you guys hoping to be medics, please be aware that the GMC has this little something in their rule book called, 'Fitness to Practise'. Don't forget, getting an offer now is only just the first (or second) hurdle out of very many lying ahead before finally getting registered by the GMC as a doctor. Of course, the next hurdle will be getting the grades . . . followed by a full DBS check; followed by . . . etc. etc.

Five, perhaps six years is a very long time before finally seeing your name in the GMC's Register! And the story doesn't end there either.

Two people my daughter knows at medical school are in big trouble for pinching small amounts of alcohol from a student bar and have been threatened with similar-sounding sanctions to those Pete describes.

Abra1de · 07/02/2018 12:18

Sorry, not drawing any parallels with anything described above in the admissions process!

booface · 07/02/2018 13:21

Thanks for the welcome. It's nice to be among friends! My DS has an interview at Newcastle just after half term. It seems so late when his friends are all sitting on offers for non medicine degrees, but this seems how it is! Patience will hopefully pay off for all our DCs!

Apparently Edinburgh will be letting non Scottish students know by end of 2nd week of Feb. That could really make or break our little half term break we are having as a family. Almost wish WiFi didn't exist!

SomersetS · 07/02/2018 14:13

The highs & lows of this process are awful. We've just stumbled in the HYMS process & DD really struggling this week despite good news. She never cries in front of others but I've just had to get her home from school in bits. My teeth will be ground to dust!

Mrsramsayscat · 07/02/2018 14:54

Last year Sheffield and Plymouth both had plenty of spaces at clearing.

movednorth · 07/02/2018 15:06

Booface, I wonder whether 'the second week of Feb' counts as this week or next? Oh heck!

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2018 16:42

Think school of the friend have now contacted the University. I think they should offer him an interview - he could've accepted it straight away (my DDs suggestion but she is so desperate to hear good news she's probably sell me if it secured her a place). He's a lovely lad and I do feel for him - he wants a Bristol so hopefully they'll let him know soon.
On a positive note DD took her car for her first MOT and it failed as a few bulbs were out (on the registration plate!). Lovely mechanics fixed them for free and retested for free. V kind of them.

booface · 07/02/2018 16:49

Hi Movednorth. I was wondering too whether E'boro mean this week or next. I am kind of guessing next as that is the end of the first full second week of Feb. My DS is still blissfully ignorant I think as he still thinks offer are in March, but when I contacted the admissions about something else they added in about when they were expecting to send offers.. so we will see! I haven't told him as I don't think he needs that stress!!

specialted · 07/02/2018 16:55

somersets, did DD not get campus of choice for hyms?

SomersetS · 07/02/2018 17:00

Specialted, afraid not, and it's the end of the world. Deep breath.

muddlethro · 07/02/2018 17:01

I'm so sorry to hear about your DD SomersetS , it's really no wonder that the pressure has got to her! What a process!! When you say that you've "stumbled in the HYMS process", they did make her a firm offer didn't they, and that's all still okay isn't it?
It's good to hear that the school have intervened with your DD's friend mumsneedwine. And I agree, it would be nice to see the uni offering him an interview, under the circumstances!

muddlethro · 07/02/2018 17:04

Sorry SomersetS, my message seems to have overlapped with Specialted, and I didn't refresh! Which campus has your DD been allocated?

watfordmummy · 07/02/2018 17:05

Oh bugger about Edinburgh!! We don't need any bad news, although DS has a plan B worked out.

We're going to be away next week so🤮

Just when I thought I couldn't be anymore stressed!!!

specialted · 07/02/2018 17:06

It's hard isn't it somersets. If you'd told her last week she'd get an offer but not on campus of choice I bet she'd have taken it. I'm sure she'll come round. Did she want Hull and get york or vice versa? Think several on tsr feel the same.

sluj · 07/02/2018 18:10

A couple of years ago HYMS wouldn't tell you your allocated campus till you had confirmed them. Has that changed?

LoniceraJaponica · 07/02/2018 18:29

At the HYMS subject talk last year they said that the students couldn't choose which campus to go to - one of the reasons DD didn't apply there.

OP posts:
Woodenhillmum · 07/02/2018 18:30

Yes, last year d had offer which stated which campus (she didn’t firm it ).

LoniceraJaponica · 07/02/2018 18:34

Do many students not accept offers if they don't get the campus they want?

OP posts:
sluj · 07/02/2018 18:35

Two years ago DS got his interview at York and then opted for the offer holders day at Hull just to get a view of both campuses. We had a conversation with the rather arrogant course director at the time about how it would be nice to at least to be able to express a campus preference. His view was that it didnt matter which one you went to and that basically they should just be happy with the offer.
He was a little more conciliatory when he found out DS had two other offers and spent some time trying to sell HYMS. In the end DS decided he did want some control over where he was going to be for the next 5 years and rejected HYMS altogether. At that point they would not tell him his allocation till after he had firmed them. It's a shame because one of the campuses would have been first choice but the other would have been last choice.
Obviously if he only had one offer and it was HYMS he would have snapped it up, whichever campus.

Actually having visited both campuses, I think they are both great places. One is definitely much further for us though.

SomersetS is your DD sure she has been allocated a campus and not just invited to the offer holders Day?

LoniceraJaponica · 07/02/2018 18:44

I got the impression that the course director was arrogant as well. He basically said that anyone who got an offer would be pleased to get one and should just accept where they were sent or lump it.

OP posts:
sluj · 07/02/2018 18:49

Same bloke, I reckon. Though maybe he was fed up with everyone saying the same thing to him and they have made some changes for this year?
I know DS didn't want to take a chance with the allocation so he rejected them. If he had known the campus beforehand he could have chosen properly.
Having said that, UEA is working out wonderfully for him 😁

Woodenhillmum · 07/02/2018 19:01

My d rejected it because the course didn’t suit her so well as the offer she accepted. She did have 3 other offers so could choose . In the scenario of 1 offer and having applied knowing campus is allocated after a successful interview I can’t imagine many people who were serious about medicine would reject it .
