New thread here

OP posts:

I also know of someone who dropped a grade and still got in last year. I have also been reading about waiting lists at some med school, which they use as a way of managing that (impossible?) challenge of knowing how many students will accept places and/or need to use insurance places and/or get the grades. So there's hope - right up until August. Whether our nerves will last that long. What's the end result of 'frazzled'? Needmoresleep, I think booking something exciting for September sounds like an excellent idea, if we get to the point of needing a diversion.

mumsneedwine · 05/02/2018 14:46

On train on way home. DD said interview was 'fine' so who knows. For anyone having one at Liverpool she said they are all very friendly and give them chocolate at the end. 😁. DD met a girl who has interview at Southampton on same day and same time - and saw another one she also saw at Sheffield. And saw an old school friend ! I love Liverpool and Virgin trains

Movingmountains · 05/02/2018 17:10

Adrinkofwater - exactly how I feel! This site is amazing - so glad I found it as no longer feel I am going slightly crazy! Not the only one with an TSR obsession ......
Thanks all 👍

specialted · 05/02/2018 17:32

Yes I thought I was going mad too! Becoming totally obsessed with TSR, I actually feel like I know most of the students on there now! Glad it's not just me. Think I will resist getting the app though, otherwise I'll never be off my phone..

JulyAphrodite · 05/02/2018 17:36

When my son went for one of his interviews one of the students was chatting behind us and I recognised him from TSR :/

Abra1de · 05/02/2018 18:21

There are several at my daughter’s large Midlands medical school with an odd B in one of last year’s A levels. Usual offer is A*AA.

2B1Gmum · 05/02/2018 18:22

mumsneedwine, did your DD stay and have a tour of any sort? We have booked a train after 7pm to allow for a quick bite to eat if possible (next Thurs), interview is early afternoon. I hope it wasn't too cold in The Crypt, and that you found a nice warm place for a coffee.

mumsneedwine · 05/02/2018 18:27

2B1Gmum no tour, but she did the Taster day and open day last year so knows the place quite well. Not sure if tour was offered. She said it wasn't too cold but she did have a jacket on. Oh and get your kids to check their texts day before - on way home mine showed me a lovely one from Liverpool offering free tea and cake in the museum for parents. Bit late DD !!!! And finished half hour earlier than said on letter so think that's just a guide time. He now and I have a shed load of marking to do.

hellsbells99 · 05/02/2018 18:37

My DD is at Liverpool university doing a STEM course and some of her January exams were in the Crypt this year. She loves Liverpool.

adrinkofwater · 05/02/2018 18:58

TSR telling of another offer for Leicester today - just 1 today so far and 1 on Friday as well. I know not everyone declares their offers on tsr, but its usually more than one at a time. They seem to be giving them out so slowly, which makes waiting so painful.Sad

2B1Gmum · 05/02/2018 19:10

Thank you mumsneedwine, we should have time for something to eat then, and thanks for the tip about tea and cake. Good luck with the marking.

Keeping fingers crossed for your 'adrinkofwater', it is certainly drawn out process for some more than others, with offers starting before Christmas for some and I am expecting much later for several others.

All - don't forget I knew someone with 4 interviews, no offers who then got Southampton in clearing - I was impressed that she kept going after the disappointment and got three A*. Resilience for you.

TonTonMacoute · 06/02/2018 17:09

All - don't forget I knew someone with 4 interviews, no offers who then got Southampton in clearing - I was impressed that she kept going after the disappointment and got three A. Resilience for you.

I posted on the general offers thread about another girl who had the same experience. No offers, kept going, got 4 A*s and received three offers through clearing. She is now at Birmingham.

Their determination is incredible, I am dumb with admiration for them,

mumsneedwine · 06/02/2018 17:09

So what do I do with this ?
A friend of my DD was rejected Pre interview from a Uni. They checked UCAS today and it says offer from that same Uni - for medicine !!!! Poor kid is happy but obviously knows it's a complete cock up. Part of me says mind my own business but this is a Uni that my own DD is waiting to hear from post interview.
So ladies, what shall I do ?

Movingmountains · 06/02/2018 17:33

Oh my gosh that's a terrible cock up. I wonder where the error has come from - uni or UCAS. I imagine that someone along the line will realise the error and the friend should contact the uni concerned. If I was in her shoes I would be worried that someone will realise it's an error and the offer will be rescinded anyway.

sluj · 06/02/2018 17:42

Oh dear, that's a terrible cock-up . Tempting as it is, I don't think they will be able to deal with the doubt all the way up to Day 1. Imagine going along with it and booking your accommodation, etc, but wondering every day if you would be taken to one side for the chat.

Does this person have any other offers?

booface · 06/02/2018 18:19

So glad to have found the thread, may I say "hi"? I am also a mum of DS applying for medicine. As so many waiting anxiously for offers. Hoping to hear from Edinburgh in next few weeks (they don't interview) and my DS had other interviews, but no news yet!!!

It's so nail biting isn't it? Especially as friends and family asking how it's going as they don't realise it all takes a lot longer than for the other subjects.

Minikew · 06/02/2018 18:27

@mumsneedwine - this admin error doesn't surprise me. If it was my DD I would get her to email the Uni admissions thanking them for their offer and asking them a question about booking accomodation or something else. That way they have a chance to reply and either correct the error or confirm it !! I know of a particular Uni in the Midlands that has made errors like this in past years!

specialted · 06/02/2018 18:36

Welcome booface! Hopefully you will get some comfort on this site and realise it's not just you going through this tortuous process! Agree, am fed up with people asking about offers, I now tell people I'll let them know any news so please stop asking!

Mumsneedwine, what a nightmare! I'd have to query it, I couldn't face the uncertainty. Although I have heard of ucas changing offers without notifying candidates. Friend's DS thought he had an offer of ABB (not for medicine) but logged on a few weeks later and it had been changed to unconditional. He had no idea!

2B1Gmum · 06/02/2018 19:09

Welcome booface - this thread helps keep us sane. DS a bit thin on the ground compared with DD, I believe that is a reflection of applications to some extent. Lots waiting to hear and some still with interviews to come - one more for my DD in half term. More anxious waiting around and drinking coffee! It is certainly a very different process to other Uni applications - fingers crossed within next 6 weeks or there will be lots of positive news on the thread.
Off to choir to concentrate on something different.

movednorth · 06/02/2018 20:52

Has anyone else noticed that on TSR even the applicants have gone quiet? I think they're just exhausted. (On the particular threads that I am obsessively refreshing, anyway!)

SomersetS · 06/02/2018 22:59

Welcome booface!

Yes all exhausted here - DD hit the wall tonight. Last interview yesterday & today is like she's run out of steam. Tempted to phone her in sick tomorrow. Roll on half term!

swingofthings · 07/02/2018 07:29

A friend of my DD was rejected Pre interview from a Uni. They checked UCAS today and it says offer from that same Uni - for medicine !!!!
OMG, however tempting it would be, if it was my DD, I would tell her that she has to be honest and contact them to let them know of the error. It's not just about being caught up and the implication of it, it's living through years going through medicine knowing that they got in through deception, that is if she's never found out. Who knows what the repercussion could be of her saying nothing, it might be on her UCAS application.

I do believe that honesty and good deeds always pay off in the end, and indeed, my experience is that they do. If she call them, they might actually decide to invite her for an interview after all.

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2018 07:49

Thanks all. Apparently DDs friend had had this for over 3 weeks now. Was rejected from medicine but offered biomed instead but looks like someone forgot to change the course at UCAS. My DD is v pragmatic and has told him to accept it but she also has a twinge of envy as she's still waiting. Makes you wonder how many other things get lost in the system !

SomersetS · 07/02/2018 08:55

Mumsneedwine the medical schools have all stressed time and time again "DO NOT LIE, DO NOT EMBELLISH... we will catch you and you will be out" etc - If it was my DC there is no way I would risk them signing up for the course, getting there (if it gets that far) and getting kicked out. I would ring Admissions myself if DC wouldn't and explain. As Swing says, they might even take pity and offer an interview. Just because UCAS says offer (which is an unforgiveable error really), the Uni records will surely show decline? Deceit in this instance or even deliberate ignorance surely won't work?

SomersetS · 07/02/2018 08:56

Still thinking, perhaps call the school? Surely the Head of Sixth Form or similar would have a responsibility to help sort it out?
