Hopefully this is in time!

OYBBK, FWIW my DS is at Warwick doing maths and loves it - the campus, the student life, Leamington... Oh yes, he even enjoys the course too Wink

fiftyval · 12/01/2018 13:48

Well done to all our dc whatever the outcomes.
I have been reading with interest the dilemma some of our dc re whether to accept offers as drink been lucky enough to get pooled to Murray Edwards for nat sci with standard offer of AAA. She is not rushing into
a decision as she loves York and can see herself there. She will go to offer holders overnight stay in March to get a proper feel of things. She is very impressed with ME so far and their communication with her.

Risotto301 · 12/01/2018 13:50

Kitten, sorry I may have missed/forgotten, what is the CO of your DD?

We have the same “problem” here, DS was too convinced by me about his second choice (imperial) being as good and Oxford is “just another uni”, before D day. So he was not as thrilled about the offer as people expected and now said he has to further consider which one to firm!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2018 13:57

a a a in any order and a 1,1 in STEP 2 and 3.

It's good to hear of others considering things carefully.

Fiftyval, DS shares the same happy problem.

Do you know if Oxbridge and Imperial host offer holders day?

toomanytolist · 12/01/2018 14:18

Just coming on to say an A in FM and an A in maths is very unlikely but I see it's already been said. DD who is also Engineering at Cambridge has got A A* A for maths, FM & physics with no specification which is which, plus a B in her fourth subject.

Risotto I think most colleges at Cambridge hold offer holder days but Imperial doesn't - at least not for the strand of engineering that DD got her offer for.

Hubble25 · 12/01/2018 15:50

We are lucky here. Oxford all the way. Decision made.

Risotto301 · 12/01/2018 16:44

Happy for you Hubble!

HesMyLobster · 12/01/2018 16:53

Us too Hubble - no question!
DD has spent the last 2 days reading every bit of information available and compiling lists of everything she needs to do before she goes and pack to take!
I think she's mentally already moved in!

Dancingdreamer · 12/01/2018 17:46

I did a post grad at Warwick part-time. I can’t speak for all courses but I found the teaching and support was outstanding. I have to agree that the campus and location for a young student could be a bit soulless.

HarrietSmith · 12/01/2018 17:51

Could I ask what your particular post-grad course was DD?

kaiserschmarrn · 12/01/2018 18:02

Thanks, roisin and pallando for the STEP advice and links.

DS's offer is A in Economics, and then AAA in any order for the rest (Maths, FM and Physics). And 1s in STEP II and III.

Rather him than me. Shock

alltheworld · 12/01/2018 18:06

I would like to cheer up a friend’s daughter who got a rejection letter this week from Cambridge. Could I say that the fact they put her in the pool means they liked her they just didn’t have enough places at the college or is everyone put in the pool if their first choice college rejects them?

goodbyestranger · 12/01/2018 18:12

To be fair Hubble and Lobster, it's almost a no brainer with PPE, Law, arts and humanities because of the relatively low standard conditional offer - slightly tougher if you're facing the pressure of two A* or STEP. Well done both however, delighted to read their news!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2018 18:23

It's not the offer that's putting dd off, the step is a little daunting, but its ok, I think she genuinely loved Warwick too, for different reasons. It's such a massively different prospect from Oxbridge and that I think can make it harder to compare. It's like trying to decide if you like cheese or chocolate best.

Alltheworld, if she was in the pool it meant they thought she would be a good candidate for cambridge, but that they didn't have the space for her at that college.

goodbyestranger · 12/01/2018 18:35

Some people are put off by the pressure of the offer though Kitten. Although academic pressure is a dominant feature at Oxford and Cambridge, so....

That said, it's pleasant to have the pressure off for a bit with a AAA offer and makes the remainder of Y13 that bit more chilled, which has to be good. DS1 reaped the benefit of having an offer for Medicine in 2012, the last year of AAA, which was especially nice :)

Hubble25 · 12/01/2018 18:40

Yes Goodbye a no brainer regarding offer (although not much in it) but more importantly the type of teaching is perfect for my DS.

goodbyestranger · 12/01/2018 18:45

Is he happy with his college Hubble? If he got pooled, then I would say that sometimes being put sideways to somewhere else ends up with a better fit. Very glad it worked out anyhow, and the initial gloom was unfounded.

Hubble25 · 12/01/2018 18:50

Thank you so much Goodbye. He is really happy!! :)

RaindropsAndSparkles · 12/01/2018 18:58

Alltheworld dd had three Oxford interviews last year and was rejected. Was happy with Edinburgh and then got 3 A* dropping very few UMS points. Within ten minutes her response was "Oxford had their chance", I'm applying to Cambridge. And ten minutes later changed subject too.

She's happier, more secure in herself and was better placed for interview and is better placed to go.

Her Head had a lovely phrase, something like "fail well - it opens doors and provides new options".

DD is yet more thrilled today, the two friends also applying on gap years were also successful. They are out tomorrow night Smile. The third fessed up today, they were all worried about each other so kept it off public social media.

DD now has her ucas offer and has hone upstairs to accept. She also bought a Moleskine journal today for Cambridge bullet journal plans.

She is so happy; four years ago she was in the depths of depression, pre anorexia. It is bloody marvellous Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2018 19:05

I'm so pleased for your dd Raindrops :)

OP posts:
goodbyestranger · 12/01/2018 19:11

Try to make sure she's as grounded as possible before she leaves for Cambridge in October Raindrops. I wouldn't say that except for your post worrying about the sickness earlier this week, which suggests you're still jumpy. It's very easy to slip back at Oxford and Cambridge, although the support is mostly excellent and in that sense a better environment for the vulnerable than many other more anonymous places. At least she's post qual, which will give her nine months of relaxation to put her difficulties even more firmly to bed. Glad it worked out as I know you were dreading a negative outcome, understandably.

Hubble25 · 12/01/2018 19:12

Raindrops that brought tears to my eyes. So, so happy for her and relieved for you.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 12/01/2018 19:27

Thanks for that Goodbyestranger. I know. But nothing like sapping the joy.

Lucycat · 12/01/2018 19:31

Kitten - my DD is having the same wobbles about her Oxford offer. She isn't totally sure about the course and I think that the 100+ congratulations on FB has sent her into a spin' what happens now if I decide it's not for me' Two unconditional offers don't help at Unis that she would be more than happy with.

I'm backing off now until mock results are in and she's has time to process everything.
