Just spent 20 mins watching DD sob on fb messenger. Feels awful not being able to give her a hug.

lazydog · 14/11/2017 18:09

So sorry simbobs Sad

HSMMaCM · 14/11/2017 18:28

Oh SimBobs you poor thing. Could you mail her a little treat? Do you have a photo of her with the dog?

Take care of yourself too BrewCake

simbobs · 14/11/2017 19:05

I can't decide whether or not to send her a pic of her and dog, as it might upset her even more at this stage. As predicted, she now says she doesn't want to come back for Christmas - she means it, too. Having lost a close family member when I was away from home I know that it is easier not to be in the place that you associate with them, to imagine that they are still there even if you are not. She poured all her love into that dog. Thanks for the sympathy.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2017 19:09

Awww.... sorry to hear about your dog, Simbobs. Flowers

I'm not sure if it's too soon to send a picture of them together... it very much depends on your DD I guess.

Horsemad · 14/11/2017 19:18

Sorry to hear about the dog. Flowers
Just keep the contact going Simbobs; the conversation about Xmas can be had later.

QOD · 14/11/2017 19:19

simbobs · 14/11/2017 19:42

Haffdonga · 14/11/2017 19:44

Simbobs Flowers

My beloved family dog died suddenly when I was at uni. It was payphone communication only with family in those days and I remember sobbing for several days afterwards on flatmates' shoulders. I miss that crazy dog to this day but it did actually show me how incredibly supportive and kind my flatmates were. They're still good friends 30 years later, I hope your dd gets some support.

Dogs... why do they have such short lives? Sad Flowers

AshleySilver · 15/11/2017 09:08

Flowers simbobs

RedHelenB · 15/11/2017 18:51

How awful for you both Simbob

lazydog · 15/11/2017 21:43

simbobs - How are you doing today? Any more contact from your dd? You've probably already decided one way or the other, but I'd think sending her a photo of her and your ddog together would be a bit much while it's still so raw for her. Flowers

fartyghost - "That's lovely news @lazydog, what's he going to do with the money - does he need it to live on or can he save it? . Happy 18th to your DS :-) "

Thanks fartyghost. x
It feels so strange not having him home for his birthday - especially as it feels like it's a milestone one (to me and dh). But with the age of majority being 19 here in BC, I think it's not considered such a big deal to them as someone's 18th was in the UK. He's saving the money for next year's university expenses. He's got no fees to pay, but will still need rent and food money.

simbobs · 15/11/2017 22:10

We have spent part of the day deciding whether to look for a new dog and DD might be able to come and meet us at the breeders. The litter is not ready yet but they would be before Christmas. It seems too soon to me, but the rest of the family seem to want it.
It would be nice to see DD too.

Blogwoman · 15/11/2017 22:47

simbobs sounds like that could be a really positive thing.

Needmoresleep · 16/11/2017 09:28

This term seems endless. It reminds me of those long autumn terms in Reception and Year 7. After a reasonably gentle start, the work is picking up. Yet still another four weeks to go. They start early and finish late, which makes about 14 weeks in all. Perhaps better than trying to cram the same content into 8 weeks as Oxbridge friends do.

After that it's a University ski trip, followed by revision for January exams. It will be a long year. She is already thinking about what she might do during her summer vacation. Some work and a return to volunteering she has done previously, but also a much needed break, after what will have been a marathon.

bigTillyMint · 16/11/2017 09:32

NMS, my DD realised that she was too late to get on the uni ski trip this year but I have told her to join up asap so she can get on the next one! She is now looking for a house for 7 of them for next year Confused

LineysRum · 16/11/2017 09:47

DS is doing some volunteering over Xmas with me - it'll be really good to spend time with him. He sends me pictures if the meals he's made, so he's doing ok I think.

Needmoresleep · 16/11/2017 10:07

BTM, DD gets to go on the medics one, which may be easier to get onto. She was quite nervous as sign up was early, wihtin the first few weeks, and she does not know many (any?) freshers who are going. She has a friend working in the same resort so even if, by then, she does not know anyone on the trip, she can hang out with the resort chalet staff instead.

That said, sign up for trips seems very early. DD was interested in going on one of the Easter sports tours, but really does not know whether it is sensible to take a week out just before her first year exams, given how much stuff she needs to know. In the end she decided to, as a break will probably help rather than hinder revision.

Hugs Simbobs Flowers I work from home so our dog is my constant companion, I see more of him than the others combined and I love all his quirks and foibles.

Your post reminded me of ringing home on the payphone after Finals only to be told by my mum that the dog had died but she hadn't wanted to tell me during Finals - possibly the only considerate thing she ever did for me xx
