The other thread filled up really quickly, with exciting talk of laundry, mattress toppers and lost property.

Here's where the rest of them settle in, get through freshers and the work gets serious.

DS isn't getting his DSA assessment thingy till next week. He already has a laptop so that's not the issue really. Just thought it would happen sooner I suppose. He registered with student support in Freshers' Week.

I'm really missing him and his older sister today.

Horsemad · 16/10/2017 19:38

Flowers Liney, I tend to miss mine at the weekend Sad

SoupDragon · 16/10/2017 19:39

I used my standard flapjack recipe andjust swapped the butter for peanut butter. I had to add some milk at the end (perhaps a tablespoon or two) just to get the texture right as it was firmer than an ordinary butter version.

LineysRun · 16/10/2017 19:42

I think it's because I went to the supermarket today and bought a single pint of milk.

SoupDragon · 16/10/2017 19:45

250g porridge oats (the cheap type, not large ones),
150g Butter,
2 generous tablespoons (75g) Golden Syrup
half a tin condensed milk

baking tin, no bigger than about 18cm x 28cm

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees c
  2. Line the baking tin with baking parchment.
  3. Melt the butter, syrup and condensed milk in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil for about a minute.
  4. Remove from the heat and gradually add the oats, folding them in. All the oats should be coated, and the mixture quite dense, but still sticky. Don't add so many oats that the mixture becomes dry.
  5. Pour the mixture into the tins and spread about so that it lines the tin to a depth of 2-3cm. Don't squash the mixture in, just spread it evenly.
  6. Bake in the oven for about 15mins. You should take them out when they just start to go brown round the edges, don't leave longer than this. If they're still squidgy in the middle that's fine, they set on cooling.
SoupDragon · 16/10/2017 19:48

Haffdonga you have the same basic recipe as me and that's what I taught DS1 to make. :o

Horsemad · 16/10/2017 19:57

Yes Liney, I have found out who drank all the milk. Four pints lasted days!! Prior to him leaving I was always replenishing.

LineysRun · 16/10/2017 20:43

And I bought a single banana

BehindTheBlueDoor · 16/10/2017 20:55

It's weird isn't it? There are still 3 of us at home but I can't justify an online shop as I don't need enough. Before DS went I had an online shop and probably 2 top-up shops a week. How did he eat so much?!

Horsemad · 16/10/2017 21:03

They have hollow legs I think Behind Wink

I am missing the cakes and goodies I used to buy for DS. Have tried to be good and not buy them but have a severe case of the munchies and have NO chocolate in the house. Sad

BackforGood · 16/10/2017 21:18

Thanks for recipe Soup.

Lost track of who is who now - sorry Blush - but re footie seeking ds, I absolutely think he must put shirt on and go into the union bar when match is on and he'll find his tribe.
My dd likes rugby and has found friends already doing this despite girls who like rugby being a minority. Big step to go on your own at first if shy but will be worth it.
(Sadly still not found a piano though)

Am fairly stunned she has bought and eaten veg on more than one occasion ( sent me a photo as she knew I would doubt her Grin)

AmITwirly · 16/10/2017 23:07

Glad to say DS' maintenance loan arrived a few days ago.

Inspired by this thread, I asked DS what he'd cooked for himself tonight. The answer was king prawns cooked in butter and garlic, with wild rice and a side plate of asparagus. Not your standard student fare! At least I don't need to worry about him not eating properly. Grin

rogueantimatter · 16/10/2017 23:25

Wow. How fab.

bigTillyMint · 17/10/2017 07:12

Wow! DD is priding herself on spending less than £20 a week on food so she has all the more for clubbing. But she said she made a risotto with rocket, blue cheese and some other bitsShock!

Horsemad · 17/10/2017 07:30

Well done bTM DD Smile I love how they are (in the main!) being careful with money.

I have offered DS a bit extra as he has plays quite a lot of football & his washing is costing him £5 a time.

fairyofallthings · 17/10/2017 07:34

£20 a week for food?! Wow!

LadyinCement · 17/10/2017 08:57

Rather disturbingly I am cooking the same amount as before ds left and there are no leftovers... I am feeling that an additional downside of ds's leaving is that three fatties will be stuck in the front door greeting him when he comes home.

BlossomCat · 17/10/2017 10:26

We had a very complicated text conversation yesterday.
Ds left his PS3 behind, and we're using it as a Netflix machine now. We've managed to lock ourselves out of it, and only ds knows how to reset it.
Lots of texting of passwords and detailed instructions, and Dh has stated he's giving up on 'fannying about with the bloody thing'
and 'it can wait till ds comes home'

Essentially, we've realised another reason for missing him; IT expertise.
Grin

MorvahRising · 17/10/2017 11:13

BlossomCat we're in the same boat without DS when IT problems strike - plus grandparents and elderly next door neighbour who also depend on him!

JoanBartlett · 17/10/2017 11:34

One lost his bank card into the machine (faulty machine) so that's a bit of a problem and the new car will come home first. Another has made the second badminton team (not the best one that plays other univesities) but even so he's pleased and the third team is the messing around to have a social time so I think he's in the right team for him. He says there is so much reading been set that he and the others have agreed no one even if doing anything else would have time to do it so I hope they can manage that. I suggested some kind of triage - work out what was urgent and important and try to do it in order of priority.

(Blossom before my older son left he and I did a big switch over of sky and netflix passwords and user names to me as he had tended to deal with that for me although I paid. So far it is working fine touch wood........

Lady I had been working through child's stocks of cooking chocolate, brownie mix, nuts (he refused to take it with him)..... thankfully that's all gone so nothing tempting left as I am not tempted by his 20 packets of sweets.

HSMMaCM · 17/10/2017 12:46

I would have to post a packet of sweets each week, to stop myself from eating them.

DD said she and some other psychology students were 'reading together'. Hopefully that was a good thing and not a waste of time.

LineysRun · 17/10/2017 13:23

OH recently got himself a safe (he handles a bit of cash) and I was jealous and fancied channelling my inner Phil Mitchell so I got him to install a safe in my house too.

DS has left all the codes and passwords in the safe.

So far, I have remembered the combination.

GrumpyOldBag · 17/10/2017 13:26

I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies last night for DS2. Normally they'd be gone by now.

But with DS1 away and only one teenage boy at home, there are many still in the tin ... gently calling my name...

bigbluebus · 17/10/2017 15:33

It's not good for the diet having all theses teenagers away. Grin

I had friends around for dinner at the weekend and am renowned for over catering! Usually it is fine as DS doesn't mind 'hoovering up' all the left over puddings but sadly this time DH and I have had to do it!

GrumpyOldBag · 17/10/2017 15:43

Yeah, I just gave in to the chocolate chip cookie craving ...
