How is everyone settling in?

DD starts on Wednesday.

The hall told us double bedding will fit, so that's what I bought; I hope it does!

Hot water from cold tap isn't good, is it?!

ImListening · 20/09/2017 06:37

Thank you lazy - couple of hours so not too bad for wanting to pop home. I'm hoping that when lectures start they get more into a routine.

In the meantime Gin for me.

Sparklingbrook · 20/09/2017 06:39

Sounds very much like when you buy a new house. Grin

Horsemad · 20/09/2017 06:40

It does! All the 'snagging'! Smile

HSMMaCM · 20/09/2017 08:15

And we're off.

Lmlistening thinking of you and your ds.
Our ds has been ok so far, as far as we know, but I worry about him all the time, he struggles socially and gets very down on himself.

The cost of halls varies so much! It is £4500 for the s/c halls ds is in, it is ensuite, but that is tiny.

HSMMaCM · 20/09/2017 08:33

ImLiatening I was really worried about DD being isolated, but she seems to have found someone from her house to chat to online, so hopefully she'll have at least one person to talk to while she settles in.

It's so hard for them being thrown into an environment where they don't know anyone and they don't come home in the evening.

Good luck everyone. It'll be interesting to see where they all are by the end of October / Christmas.

rogue RADA is on Gower Street - Bloomsbury. Lovely spot actually. Very near SOAS and some of the UCL buildings.

DD isn't moving into her halls until UCL Freshers precisely to avoid the situation you describe.

bigTillyMint · 20/09/2017 08:49

I think DD's is about £5800 uncatered (not ensuite but decent sized room, small double, 1 bathroom for 3), but DH is dealing with the financesGrin

Hope it goes well today HSM!

MollyHuaCha · 20/09/2017 09:04

Good luck to those off today! In our family we still have a week to go.

oneleftinthenest · 20/09/2017 09:20

My youngest goes on Saturday , I'm going to struggle but will hide it , not sure if all the stuff she's taking is going to fit in the car! The uni is a 4 hour drive and she won't be home till Easter . We are meeting on holiday at Christmas to visit our eldest who's living in Oz so that's exciting for us all . She's nervous but excited .

ono40 · 20/09/2017 10:56

Horse I wonder what the 50p covers?!

We are paying...cries...£8036! OK so it is fully catered, ensuite, small double bed and fairly new accommodation but still! The minimum loan of about £3k will barely take the edge off [shocked].

DS texted last night to ask whether he should get a part-time job (hell yes!) and that he was staying in and being sensible as he'd been out late two nights in a row Grin

HSMMaCM · 20/09/2017 16:57

DD's room has a lovely view of the gents toilets!

She's told me I can go nowSad

LaughingLlama · 20/09/2017 17:01

We are paying £4946.48 for a single fair sized room in modern flat with shared bathroom facilities, uncatered with a huge shared kitchen.

ImListening · 20/09/2017 19:08

Thank you - she's spoken to dh & is ready to come home. I'm hoping it improves once she starts lectures otherwise Sad

ImListening · 20/09/2017 19:08

She was so excited to go as well - it's hard for them

LineysRun · 20/09/2017 19:16

ImListening, there's such a lot for them to deal with, in one massive hit. Registering with university, library, any student support, GP, dentist - then dealing with halls and flatmates, finding out where things are, making payments, picking modules, societies, ... it's such a lot.

Then, hopefully, it settles down and becomes much less overwhelming.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 20/09/2017 19:18

Ds1 was doing a history treasure hunt today with fellow students

They gave up and went to wetherspoons Shock

I cant decide whether thats good or not Hmm

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 20/09/2017 19:39

Its ok...apparently it was supposed to end there anyway

HSMMaCM · 20/09/2017 20:33

Rufus Grin

On the way home from dropping DD you've got a friend by james Taylor was playing

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, oh yeah baby, to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you've got to do is call
And I'll be there, ye, ye, ye
You've got a friend

When she said goodbye, she said, "it's the first time I've been away on my own".

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 20/09/2017 20:38

Oh bless you both Grin

Ds1 says he feels guilty that he doesnt feel homesick, his words are

'I think i am settling in, i mean ive been clubbing the past 4 days and likely the next 6 too. So i am getting into a system'

Clubbing every night isnt a system!!!!!!

BestIsWest · 20/09/2017 20:53

That would have set me off completely HsMM, we've taken DS to see James Taylor live a couple of times.

He rang tonight (when I was out) and spoke to DH. All well so far.

user327854831 · 20/09/2017 20:54

The modern rooms seem to be really small, almost box room size, certainly a change from a large double bedroom. There are four of them in the flat; the sofa seats three but they have to be well acquainted and there is one armchair, then there is a small table and four chairs. Though the standards are high and facilities are good. They often have to queue for the lifts as there are two lifts for 200 or so students - there are too many floors to walk up.

Oldie2017 · 20/09/2017 21:11

I just psoke to one of my sons who says his tiny room is fine (his twin's room in a near by hall is 3x the size at least. May be 4x). He says it is all going well. The people are really really really nice and his corridor is 50/50 male/female (his twin is in a hall with 12 men in his little block thing). There rae 2 boys from their school in near by halls too so I think the 4 of them at least have someone else to go to see if they want a break from the activities although he seems very happy with all the activities and is about to go out. the food is fine although he has just been up in time for 2 breakfasts so far as they start so early.

BestIsWest · 20/09/2017 21:26

User, I was quite shocked that there were only 2 lifts for 21 floors in DS accommodation. Luckily he is on the lowest floor so has the option of stairs.

£5628 for ensuite self catered.
