Aww so sorry for those that are finding it hard. Im sure it will get better. I said to DD to think of it a bit like shes on holiday and before she knows it the strange kitchen, etc will feel quite normal Grin

Mytimenow · 18/09/2017 20:47

DS has replied to my txt that everything's ok! That's all I've had since Saturday.

Stopyourhavering · 18/09/2017 20:52

Ds has messaged to say he has joined the gym!( including use of swimming pool for £18/month).... he's been away over 2 weeks now and settling into lectures now.....studying 2 totally new subjects which he's never studied before(philosophy and geology!) so hope he enjoys them!
his eldest sister has now left home so our house is very quiet....but at least I know where all the cutlery/plates/glasses are!! Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 18/09/2017 20:54

Excellent my and stop

Ds joined the gym on Saturday, i think he went for a workout today

It is the silent disco tomorrow night, ghost tour on thursday and full moon party on friday. Freshers fair on Saturday

Assuming he is actually attending these event he should be shattered

user327854831 · 18/09/2017 20:56

Rufus there are probably no lectures on Wednesdays because that is when unis all keep the day free for inter-university sports fixtures.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 18/09/2017 21:12

Aaah now that's useful to know user

I only usually work on two days of the week...guess which days Grin

Only short days so thats alright

dahliaaa · 18/09/2017 21:15

Oh crisp :-( hope the week gets easier for him.

Auntpetunia2015 · 18/09/2017 21:16

Well after blowing the electrics in the whole block and setting the fire alarm off. DS had a good night out and today was snap chatting me as he made breakfast and wandered to the shops random pics if interesting shops he might go in. Tonight he's our with his flat mates and tomorrow he's got workshops. No chance of a lie in as his room backs into a primary school so was noisy from 8:40 onwards. At least he won't be late.
Hope everyones DC settle down over the next few days.

Horsemad · 18/09/2017 21:16

Must check when DS's rent is due; we've had to pay nearly £1000 already for accommodation and he isn't even there yet! Shock

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 18/09/2017 21:19

Oh so sorry crisp Thanks

TheMightyMing · 18/09/2017 21:25

DS said that most people are expecting money in by the end of the week - apparently they have to actually enrol first. As I said he's ok for money and we don't have to pay first rent till next month.

Horsemad · 18/09/2017 21:26

Crisp hope your DS feels a bit better about it all soon Flowers

BehindTheBlueDoor · 18/09/2017 21:29

Hi all. Two weeks until mine goes too LittleHo. He's working atm so it doesn't feel real yet. He's looking forward to it especially with reports from friends who have gone already and I think he's ready but who knows? I remember being terribly homesick but DH embraced it so maybe DS will take after him. Nearly done with buying stuff but at some point he will have to think about which clothes to pack, or should I say buy before he packs!

readsalotgirl63 · 18/09/2017 21:30

Hi all - took dd to settle in weekend of 8th/9th - 3 hours away.

Persuaded dh that we didn't need a van but did take 2 cars because of all the "stuff". Move in went ok - was a bit worried as dd only 2nd person to move in to 5 person flat and I didn't want to leave her. The upside was that she got to stake a claim to 2 cupboards and decent space in the fridge freezer. I agreed to leave when 2 other flat mates appeared.

DH arrived home before me and admitted to having " a little cry"- was quite shocked as he is not a crier. House felt very strange and quiet as dd is an only. Around 10pm DH - " do u think she is ok , why hasn't she phoned, you should call her - may be she's lost her phone"
Me in response - " My xray vision/superpowers are not working and she can't have lost her phone as it is permanently glued to her hand but I will text her to check she is ok"
1.30am - dd texts in response to say goodnight Grin

A week on and dd seems to be settling in ok although I think she is finding sharing a kitchen an interesting experience and is a little shocked at the amount of alcohol being consumed. She had been in touch via Facebook with others in the residence altho not in her flat and she seems to have made friends with a couple of girls from the flat upstairs. Interestingly one of her flatmates has already requested a transfer to halls which are regarded as more of a "party place".

DH and I did see her this weekend as we passed through en route to visit friends - she seems tired but enjoying herself and looking forward to the course proper starting today. She did say she thought she might come home for my birthday at the end of the month - but I'm going away with friends so i felt really guilty.

Flowers and Wine to all of us and a big pat on the back for having raised dcs who are ready to embark on the next stage of their journey through life. Fingers crossed that it all goes well.

BestIsWest · 18/09/2017 21:38

DS has spoken to him on the phone tonight. He seems to have been thrown straight into work - they've been given a group project with a week to complete. A bit of an ice breaker I suppose.

Am seeing him briefly tomorrow with replacement Duvet cover, have got instructions to bring Cards Against Humanity. I wonder if he will let me buy him lunch or coffee at least

Freshers week is tough for some, not everyone wants to party all night and I think everyone gets a bit down at times, even if it's just tiredness. Hopefully they will all settle down quickly.

kath6144 · 18/09/2017 21:38

there are probably no lectures on Wednesdays because that is when unis all keep the day free for inter-university sports fixtures.

Totally untrue. DS is entering second year of a science degree, he had full wednesdays all last year, including labs in the afternoon. Iirc, some groups did the labs on a different day, so I think there was scope to swap days if you were a keen sportsman, but it is not a given that all courses have Wednesday free.

He already has his second year timetable and it is even fuller than last year, with very little free time any of the days. He has already said he wont get home for a night in week, which he could do on Tuesdays last year, as he had Tues pm off and 10am start Weds and we not too far away.

QOD · 18/09/2017 21:48

Dd has spent her first two night dealing with other people vomit and then cried herself to sleep with a terrible headache the third night
Flat mate 1 is loud and a moaner
Flat mate 2 is a bit delicate and keeps having panic attacks and it was mostly her puke from excess alcohol

Another flat on their floors shower is broken so 6 girls 1 shower over a bath and no shower curtain. No bins no lamps no kitchen bar stools. Bit shit really for nearly £6000

I. Miss. Her. So. Much.

TheMightyMing · 18/09/2017 22:01

Qod that's a disgrace I'd be complaining ! Her flatmates sound bloody awful. Can't she move ? Oh I'm really upset after reading that.

Abra1d · 18/09/2017 22:05

That's awful! Poor girl.

The alcohol is out of hand. Hate it. Universities need to crack down.

TheMightyMing · 18/09/2017 22:06

Not sure if I mentioned it upthread but after carting a load of stuff all the way from home, I looked out of DS flat window and spied a Wilko , B and M bargains and Savers within a two minute walk. All the sensible students were wandering out with airers, plastic boxes etc. Bloody typical 😂😂

LadyPeterWimsey · 18/09/2017 22:09

May I join, preparatory to DS going off in a couple of weeks? He has not done anything to get ready but is sunning himself abroad with friends instead, and won't be home until Friday. Which then leaves us a week to get lots of new clothes, any kitchen stuff and things for his room. And a bike. He did manage to order himself a new laptop though. Hmm

I have contacts where he is going who could get me a picture of where he will be living, so DD and I could get him matching bedding and make him bunting, and generally style his room. DS refuses to let us, the spoilsport. As a consolation, DD has promised me that I can make her room beautiful when she goes to uni, because she understands me about things having to match.

I don't like hearing about these sad DC. Sad I hope they feel better soon.

TheMightyMing · 18/09/2017 22:12

Re the accommodation , I was actually pleasantly surprised when I returned to DS having viewed it a few weeks ago. Yes it's a but shabby, but his room is Huge with a double bed and lots of floor space. There are 11 flats on his floor and I believe 4 are ensuite so they've three bathrooms between 7 which I though was pretty good.

Mind you 5 floors up and no lift, was flipping shattered after the fourth trip down for his belongings.

Communal space pretty big as well and they've put in new 'leather' sofas. My niece has arrived at her place in MCr and it's tiny, grim and no social space at all. Not good.

HarrietVane99 · 18/09/2017 22:23

Universities need to crack down.

How exactly? University students are adults. Universities can't police what they do in their free time.

(In my time as a student, which admittedly was a long time ago, the most important thing most people learned in their first term was how much they could drink without throwing up or getting a hangover. Once they knew their limits, most people were OK.)

ErrolTheDragon · 18/09/2017 22:48

DD still has a week to go before she leaves, but started packing this evening. 'Stuff' not clothes.

Eve · 18/09/2017 22:54

Ds has over a week b fore he goes - but added into a what's app group for his floor in halls - 6 to a floor and some are their already.
