University offers for 2018? (Part 1)

OK, I know I'm a bit early, but let the hand-holding begin...

Come and join us if you (and your DC) are about to start the UCAS process in September - applying for a place in 2018.

I've got DS1, who wants to do Computer Science in 2018. Looking at various Russell Group unis and maybe Oxbridge.

Well, DD has finally had her first offer. She has applied for medicine and had a rejection from Nottingham, but an offer for another medically related degree, which she will have as her insurance. She has an interview in a couple of weeks, and is still waiting to hear from 2 universities. She had a rejection from a 5th choice straight away.

MollyHuaCha · 01/02/2018 09:52

Medicine is so competitive. Sad for those who are struggling to get offers.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/02/2018 10:49

I think DD was getting a bit fed up. Her best friend has got into Oxford and everyone else has had (mostly) 5 offers - even those who are currently getting Es and Us.

Is getting into medicine harder than getting into Oxbridge?

CornflakeMum · 01/02/2018 11:46

Anyone else's DC waiting for an offer from Durham? DS sent application in October and has now had 3 offers and one rejection (Oxbridge) but still nothing from Durham?

Everyone says they offer late, but this seems very late if they want to do offer holder days before A levels Hmm.

DS is already saying he's not sure he would want to go there anyway if they 'aren't keen to have him' (which is his interpretation of not having heard anything yet).
?

bruffin · 01/02/2018 12:04

CornflakeMum
Durham is notorious for late offers/rejections , DS had to wait until end of march to here from them.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/02/2018 12:26

Interestingly, DD's friend found Durham rather unfriendly and "stuck up". His words, not mine. However, he has had an offer from Oxford so it is immaterial anyway. He found Oxford far more friendly BTW.

Hardwickwhite · 01/02/2018 12:30

CornflakeMum DD said exactly the same about StAndrews, that if they wanted her, they would have offered by now. Then she admitted that no one at her school had had an offer from them, and lo and behold one arrived this morning. I do wish they had a specified turn around time. That's four months they've been sitting on it.

HesMyLobster · 01/02/2018 12:46

What subject is that Hardwick?
DD is still waiting to hear from St Andrews - she had an email a while ago saying they wouldn't be sending decisions until March, but not sure if that was just for her Subject.

TonTonMacoute · 01/02/2018 14:44

A message for mums of medics, although it may not be that reassuring!

The granddaughter of a friend of mine endured 5 terrible interviews for medicine, and didn’t get a single offer.

She kept her nerve and kept working hard, and then when she got four A*s, she immediately got offers from 3 places, and is now happily studying.

It is so hard for them, I can’t think why they need to make it quite such an awful ordeal - and that’s just for the parents!

My DS is applying this year, although he did his A levels last year, which removes all stress thankfully. He has had five offers, including from Durham.

Hardwickwhite · 01/02/2018 18:33

It's Chemistry Hesmylobster

Littledrummergirl · 01/02/2018 22:28

Yay, ds1 heard from Surrey today. We figured it would be good to know one way or the other. Ds1 is... on the wait list! GrinHmmConfused

It seems he will have to wait a little longer. Gin It's a good job we have a sense of humour.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/02/2018 22:35

TonTonMacoute you can only apply to 4 medical schools these days. The fifth university has to be for another subject. Most students apply for biomed. DD applied for diagnostic radiography and got an immediate rejection.

shockthemonkey · 02/02/2018 07:14

Ah, courage to drummer and her DS1.

My DC (dear charge, not child) heard from Surrey too, but it was a rejection sadly... but it was more than made up for by a phone call from Nottingham (they finally got through!) to say that an offer would be appearing soon for her on Track.

Unnervingly, due to a technicality Nottingham still says "unsuccessful" on Track (that is because they re-considered her file on appeal and invited her to interview after first rejecting her, but could not update Track until the post-interview decision had been made).

So I feel I can only relax when Track shows the Nottingham offer.

Can anyone tell me whether, for vet applications, two interviews and just one offer is good going? The family are "not used to failure" Smile and I was actually preparing them at one point for a two-year project with a gap year and re-applying next cycle. They were not impressed -- but now with an offer, I am elated.

teta · 02/02/2018 09:31

Shockthemonkey didn’t I tell you the news would be good 🤪😜.
Many congratulations to your charge.
I think it’s perfectly normal to have one offer only.Thats all you need to be successful. Some seem to be brilliant at acing interviews and get several offers. But I’m not sure that translates to being a better vet. Sometimes thoughtfulness is a better attribute!
Dd had 4 interviews last year, but only two this year. Partially because Bristol were not selecting via interview this year but by a detailed Questionaire. Also she was rejected by the Rvc. We don’t know why and there’s no way of questioning and there seemed to be some very erroneous rejections this year by very successful candidates.
Drummer my Dd was in the very same situation last year. She subsequently received an offer towards the end of March/April from Surrey. After a offer from Bristol in early March. So there is everything left to play for! I’m glad you still have a sense of humour left as I think mine had deserted me by this stage last year🙄.

shockthemonkey · 02/02/2018 10:04

Smile thanks teta

... and positive thoughts for drummer!

HesMyLobster · 02/02/2018 12:36

Everything crossed for some good news soon for Drummer's DS Gin

HesMyLobster · 02/02/2018 12:37

And congratulations to Monkey's charge Star

HeyBells · 02/02/2018 19:13

Applying for medicine and vet sounds horrendous, so much time and energy needs to be invested in it when there are other things to be getting on with, like studying for the exams.

DS is still waiting to hear from Durham and St Andrews for physics. Hope it's not too much longer, but it definitely helps having other offers.

bruffin · 02/02/2018 19:34

Dd got her last 2 offers tonight😀 so decision time

TonTonMacoute · 02/02/2018 19:39

Lonicera My bad.

I have no idea about numbers as, thankfully, we haven’t gone down the medicine route. The point I wanted to make was to never give up, even if you are rejected by everywhere you have applied to.

I would imagine that being rejected by 4 out of 4, is every bit as bad as being rejected by 5 out of 5.

Littledrummergirl · 03/02/2018 10:56

Yay monkey thats great. Thank you Teta, that's good to hear.
From what I understand one offer for vet med is very common.

Lolimax · 03/02/2018 16:37

I really feel for everyone reading this thread. I start uni (nursing) 10 weeks on Monday and can’t decide if I’m excited, bonkers or terrified? After all who does this at 48?

MollyHuaCha · 03/02/2018 17:07

Wow Loli, that's great. Good luck!

madnskint · 03/02/2018 17:55

Well done monkey’s charge and littledrummer’s Ds great news all round. I think it’s quite usual to get an offer of a place off the waiting list/ Surrey obviously thinks he is worth it.
Dd is still waiting on Bristol and RvC- was rejected from Notts.
Vet is brutal but I guess the 5 years at uni will be tough too (for both students and parents!)
