University offers for 2018? (Part 1)

OK, I know I'm a bit early, but let the hand-holding begin...

Come and join us if you (and your DC) are about to start the UCAS process in September - applying for a place in 2018.

I've got DS1, who wants to do Computer Science in 2018. Looking at various Russell Group unis and maybe Oxbridge.

If we are talking Oxford my nephew said cocaine is the drug of choice these days.

goodbyestranger · 08/01/2018 21:07

Needmoresleep it's more than five DC but no matter, the point I made remains the same. Stella, there seems to be far more which is popular and on offer at Oxford than cocaine, just as there no doubt is everywhere else and just as there is once they get beyond uni too. I have huge, huge sympathy for your DD in her particular flat Needmoresleep but I can't quite see the difference between the Bristol set up in halls and Oxford first year accommodation, from a drugs/ party point of view. Also, drugs can be deployed as a (somewhat misplaced) antidote to academic pressure, so the idea that being at an academically demanding uni reduces exposure doesn't completely stack up. My point really was that it's too late to worry by the time they get to uni, and that being sucked into long term addiction at uni is very far from inevitable, just as it was in our day. I expect we think it's worse because we're looking at it from a protective parental perspective, but I don't get the sense that it is.

I hope that people will find some comfort from these statistics: digital.nhs.uk/media/29078/Statistics-on-Drug-Misuse-England-2016-Report/Any/drug-misu-eng-2016-rep

hellsbells99 · 08/01/2018 23:25

DD was shocked in her 1st year by the drug use in halls. Unfortunately they cannot avoid the behaviour it causes among flat mates. DD was in a flat of 11 at Leeds Uni. The accommodation staff turned a blind eye to it as drug use was obvious - little plastic bags and nitrous oxide canisters littering the living area, and tobacco and roll up stubs in the non smoking flat. The wardens did not take any action either.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2018 08:03

maybe the difference is that it's much more acceptable to be out in the open about drug use. That makes it deeply unpleasant for anyone who doesn't partake.

I'm late to the thread as DS only applied last Friday. ( I think he likes to see how far he can push me!)

He's been asked to go for an interview at the end of the month.

How usual is it to be asked to go to an interview? What does it actually mean? Is being asked to an interview an indicator that he's more likely to be offered a place, or less likely, as they'd just make an offer if he looked good enough in paper?

Sorry if I should know this already.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2018 10:55

Interviews entirely depend on the university. Some do interviews, some don't and some do them for selected courses.

Id say it's a good sign that they've made it past the first hurdle. Interviews take time and they won't interview people they aren't interested in.

bruffin · 17/01/2018 14:40

Dds occupational therapy course is interview everywhere, and i think its the same for nursing and midwiferey etc.

MajesticWhine · 18/01/2018 14:29

Was just looking for somewhere to share. DD applied on the last possible day (Monday), been stressed out of my mind with it. Today she had her first offer, from Lancaster. Feel like I can finally breathe again.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2018 14:30

Thank goodness Majestic, that must be a relief!

HammersRaised · 18/01/2018 19:19

For what subject, Majestic?

MajesticWhine · 18/01/2018 20:15

PPE (politics philosophy economics)

SongforSal · 18/01/2018 20:18

I'm really late to this thread. My DD has 4 unconditional offers, and I can't stop myself from crying every time I think about her leaving. Please someone tell me this is normal!

marmiteloversunite · 18/01/2018 20:40

SongforSal that is great that she has so many unconditionals. What does she want to study? I was at a family friend's birthday the other day and we suddenly realised that the three eldest teenagers there would be away next year for the birthday. Weird feeling! I will cry a lot so you won't be alone!!

madnskint · 18/01/2018 20:58

I generally lurk and don’t post but am absolutely bursting with relief and happiness as DD has her 1st offer for veterinary Medicine smile. The last few weeks have been difficult as she has been stressed and tense regarding her lack of offers, but she is smiling now..

Sorry just wanted to share Blush

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2018 20:59

that's great news madnskint. Well done to your dd! :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2018 20:59

Sal I had a sob yesterday!

teta · 18/01/2018 22:55

Very well done to Madnskints Dd. I had a feeling someone else on this thread would get an offer for vet. Med. this week Confused. Which Vet school is it for? The wait for your first offer is so long and stressfull for both students and parents. I swear last year aged me several years.

SluttyButty · 19/01/2018 10:27

SongforSal I’m still trying to get my head around the fact my DD is leaving home this year, taking her out for lunch for some quality time at every opportunity because I’m never getting this time back again.
She’s had two conditional and one unconditional offers so far but her top two choices haven’t offered yet (she only sent her application off on the 8th) , this is a tense time here.

madnskint · 19/01/2018 10:30

Thanks Teta it’s for Surrey

bruffin · 19/01/2018 12:49

Dd is going off to do camp america in june then back for a couple of weeks before she is off to 7ni

mumma24 · 19/01/2018 13:22

Surrey vet school looked amazing. Saw it on open day.

Trufflethewuffle · 19/01/2018 14:15

DS1 has sorted himself out and has accepted an unconditional offer from RAM plus scholarship.

DS2 applied later than I would have liked, only just over a week ago but has started getting good offers to read English. The one he is really hoping for hasn't got back to him yet but fingers crossed.

DS3 just got his application in by the deadline and is awaiting to hear.

It is possible that all 3 will b off to university or conservatoire this autumn. I won't know myself!

MollyHuaCha · 19/01/2018 17:25

Possibly three off to uni at once - a real change for your home Truffle!

And expensive

sothatdidntwork · 19/01/2018 17:43

"my advice to parents of quieter students is to look carefully at both University and accommodation."

Any particular recommendations regarding good universities for students who probably will not be in the 'noisier' category (obviously as far as specific accommodation is concerned they may have a chance to opt for 'quiet accom', but are any universities particularly unsuitable for those who aren't into large amounts of alcohol/substances etc?)

Have to admit that some of what I've read on the first year at university thread this year has made me think....
