Could we have a handholding thread? I have two DCs going through UCSS at the moment, would love to obsess here so I can appear calm on the outside.
LNAT results go to the UNIs tomorrow I think, so offers could be rolling in soon for DD who has applied for law.

My DS also has an interview at Imperial. Looking at the programme for the day, it looks more of a sales campaign than the very tough interviews given by Oxbridge. There is a buffet lunch and various tours of the campus and only a half hour interview. Does anyone know any more about it?

goodbyestranger · 11/11/2016 10:56

The Manchester interview was very definitely not an Oxbridge style interview although it was more than a hello how do you do. The interviewer talked a lot about the subject in question - it was entirely subject focused, so went beyond the purely informal. DS was asked how he thought drama linked into his (science) subject of choice, to which there's only one, or at least one sensible, answer! (I suggested he might have said it could help when fabricating an excuse for a late essay etc but DS played rather more straight).

Motheroffour - he has applied for Engineering

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2016 15:03

Jeanne - general eng. or specific branch? (obv general at oxford).

DD's southampton offer came, grades as expected. Smile

Blogwoman · 11/11/2016 15:06

Hello, my DD is also awaiting offers, though not in sciences, which seem to dominate here. Has 3 offers but anxiously awaiting one from Sussex, which is where she really wants to be.
Saw some comments about train fares and don't think anyone has posted a link to this site www.splitticketing.com You put your train journey onto it and it will calculate if there is a saving by selling you split tickets - all perfectly legal but can be complicated to work out for yourself. The site then charges 10% of the split ticket saving. Did a lot of trips for open days this year and my best saving so far was £100 on 2 tickets!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2016 15:41

Great, the more options for tickets the better! Smile I think there are quite a range of courses among the posters, but seems like some subjects interview more which generates more posts at this stage. Hope she gets that offer soon (and note the warning to check junk mail!)

Anyone else's DC got 5 identical conditional offers? How on earth to choose?

Hollybollybingbong · 11/11/2016 17:06

DS received a rejection from Cambridge, seeing his current Further Maths grades it's definitely for the best. He's outwardly quite mellow about the decision and is thinking of firming Durham and for insurance Birmingham, of course he might change his mind when he goes to the offer holder open days.

Blogwoman · 11/11/2016 17:46

Thanks Errol. Yes junk mail thing - what a nightmare! Is your DD awaiting more offers? Good luck.
I'm going to be doing it all again with younger DD next year, with early application needed as she's aiming for a dental course.

goodbyestranger · 11/11/2016 18:30

My first five DC all had all AAA offers. They simply insured with their second favourite and I suppose hoped to wheedle their way in had things gone wrong.

goodbyestranger · 11/11/2016 18:31

That's bad luck Holly but very good that he seems mellow. Durham is fabulous (I went there).

jeanne16 · 11/11/2016 18:37

Hollybolly. What course has your DS applied for? I haven't heard of any Cambridge or Durham offers yet.

Hollybollybingbong · 11/11/2016 20:35

jeanne16 he applied for computer science. We received an email from Durham saying most offers are made in January and received the offer a few days later. The different colleges at Cambridge all have different dates for making offers, he applied to Kings college and their website kept us up to date with offers being made. Computer science isn't on it yet but I wonder if they gently let the unsuccesful candidates down before giving the successful candidates the good news. www.kings.cam.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/applicant-information.html#all

Fingers crossed for your DC Smile

Hollybollybingbong · 11/11/2016 20:42

Thank you goodbyestranger I loved Durham, we stayed in the castle in the summer holiday to give DS and DD a feel for the place, it's the first time we'd been. The clingy mum in me is a little perturbed by the 5 hour drive but DH found a nice hotel for us to stay in when we visit, and thanks to this thread I've found return train tickets for £60 which is manageable when needed.

TheCheeseAlarm · 11/11/2016 20:43

DS1 has a Cambridge interview. He is very excited.

I'm sorry that it wasn't the case for your son Hollybollybingbong. DS1 also has Durham on his list. He loved it. It's a fabulous place.

Hollybollybingbong · 11/11/2016 21:19

CheeseAlarm congratulations to DS1, good luck, I hope he enjoys the experience and aces it! Smile
I'm relieved DS has had all the offers and rejection now, next stage he has to get the grades!
Blogwoman I know how you feel, now for DD in year 12 who wants to read English at Cambridge, I start the process again applying for work experience, shadowing schemes, summer schools and masterclasses for next year, really, it's never ending!

Waitingforsherlock · 11/11/2016 21:21

Waiting for my ds to put his application in. He has done his A 'Levels and is currently on a gap year. He is applying for Economics. . Has anyone had any offers from anywhere for this course?

I am resisting the urge to tell him to get a move on, he has finished the PS and I think he is now waiting for the school to do their bit.

Me2017 · 12/11/2016 08:49

My other twins also got an AAB offer from Notthingham (in fact that's the same offer their much older sister got a few years ago there), except in his case (more popular subject than his twwin) he hasn't also been given the option to switch it to firm unconditional (which does not matter as neither of them would do that anyway as it's not first choice).

Good luck to all those with interviews. Mine have not had offers yet from their other 4 universities but they only applied a week ago or less.

Eve · 12/11/2016 08:51

DS1 submitted his this week - was it just me who was surprised to find out you have to pay?

OddBoots · 12/11/2016 12:06

DS has gone for a slightly different approach to most, he has only applied for 3 courses, there is one he really wants, another he likes that is likely to have a similar offer, and one he likes but will probably have a lower offer. Ideally he will get an offer from his favourite and the lower offer one so he can firm and insurance them but if he doesn't then he has time to think again and fill the other two slots. He doesn't want to take time off of study to go to any more interviews than he has to. He has researched the past patterns of offers of the universities so is confident about his system but I will watch and wait.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2016 12:42

I think theres a lot of merit in that considered approach, Oddboots.

WalkingToMordor · 12/11/2016 18:17

That sounds like a very sensible approach, OddBoots.

Because the course ds has chosen interviews everywhere he could potentially have 5 interviews spread all around the country which would be a bit of a nightmare and horribly time consuming. But he felt it was too risky putting fewer universities as he is not a strong candidate so won't exactly be top of the selection pile. Fingers crossed somewhere will take him!!!! Smile
