How competitive is it?

Yes, it will be competitive.

There is an FOI request that shows the stats for entry to History in the 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 admission cycles:

2012/13: 413 applicants, 62 offers, 28 acceptances.
2013/14: 419 applicants, 91 offers, 43 acceptances.
2014/15: 440 applicants, 143 offers, 68 acceptances.

440 applications for 70 places isn't THAT competitive. Don't forget applicants apply to five universities, so broadly speaking you'd have to have a much lower application to offer rate of one in five or six to be regarded as competitive - one place for every ten applicants is competitive!

The nationality of the applicant will also be far more important - Scottish student numbers are capped, English ones aren't at Scottish universities. So that FoI is, like most FoIs, pretty meaningless without knowing that.

InformalRoman · 26/09/2016 13:42

Those figures are for Home fee applicants - 7 applicants for each place is still pretty competitive. Also, given that the number of acceptances is rising for Home students, that could infer less places available for non Home students (unless the department has expanded).

In June 2013, 28% of undergraduates were recorded as domiciled in Scotland, 32% as international and 12% as EU / non-UK. Not sure whether that would be enough info to infer that around 28% of students would be rUK?

I'm guessing that OP is in Wales from the MN name, so possibly a better chance of getting a place as will be paying fees? Grades required will still be in the region of AAA - AAB though.

Home Scottish or home rUK?

titchy · 26/09/2016 14:04

And no you can't really extrapolate the entire Scottish student domicile breakdown and assume St Andrew History will be the same - that would be ridiculous.

InformalRoman · 26/09/2016 14:22

No, I wasn't extrapolating the % rUK students for just the History department Hmm - it was for the entire institution, but I'm not sure there was sufficient information provided.

The FOI stated Home Fee. That would be for Scotland, not rUK.

Other data suggests that generally around 50% of applications to St Andrews are from Home students, 25% from rUK and 25% from International students.
