hi

I've just been reading recent threads on weekly living costs and what to take to uni and found loads of useful info. I'm certainly finding that there was so much focus on getting the results/not tempting fate that it all feels a bit of a panic now. I have a dd going to warwick and a ds going to bath.

Wondered if there is already a thread for other general tips for those with dd/s starting uni this September?

I think we need a bigger car! Currently cramming all DD’s stuff into the boot and i can see already there is too much. As she is going 400 miles away we are making a weekend of it so DH and i need a bag for our own stuff for thee nights away. At this rate i am going with spare pants and a toothbrush in my handbag!

Oops. Sorry about the double post.

Late to this thread! I'll catch up on all posts later.
My DS is going to Lancaster. He doesn't go until 2 October!

He is excited.

Teenagedream · 15/09/2016 18:28

Re Insurance - check you own household insurance. Ours covers student children living away during term time.

Our home contents covers DS while away at uni

I didn't pay extra for it, was included.

Thanks for tips re bedding. I have ordered mattress protector and fitted sheets from Amazon and will prob get the rest from Dunelm or Ikea.

We are being very rubbish about sorting anything.

But this week we've made small steps. Ds has had his meningitis jab (made him quite feverish the next morning), he's opened a student account, he's handed in all his signed off DofE Gold stuff to school, he's ordered his lab coat.

Small steps.

LIZS · 15/09/2016 19:21

Thanks , will do.

Leeds2 · 15/09/2016 20:08

Good start, Benny. Small steps will get you there in the end.

hellsbells99 · 15/09/2016 20:25

Try insurance4students or cover4students - can't remember what's it is called. They were brilliant when DD broke her MacBook last year.

GasLightShining · 15/09/2016 20:53

justaweeone DS is going wait a couple of weeks to see whether he thinks he will use a pass. I am going to complete the form so he can take it with him and then if needs one he can just had the form in. He is on campus so that may make a difference

NapoleonsNose · 15/09/2016 20:54

I just had a moment. Bringing all DD's stuff downstairs in boxes and I suddenly felt really tearful. It's worse because she said to me earlier that she'd had a bit of a cry while she was home alone today because she's made some brownies to share with her flatmates tomorrow, and dropped them on the floor. She said she suddenly felt really overwhelmed and nervous. I know she'll be ok, but she's my baby and I'm not ready for her to go Sad

GasLightShining · 15/09/2016 20:57

Napoleons - I know I just want my little boy to stay home!

It will be overwhelming bit they will be fine (especially compared to us)

BennyTheBall · 15/09/2016 21:02

Anyone bought Office for a laptop lately? Ds has just reminded me his has expired. I cant seem to find a decent student one.

Squirrills · 15/09/2016 22:02

Don't buy Office, students usually get software free via uni.

lovelybangers · 16/09/2016 07:49

DS still hasn't sorted out his bank account yet.

He is just changing the account type with his existing bank.

Did anyone get a speedy changeover ?

He has two weeks before the start of term....

Hmm
Northernlurker · 16/09/2016 08:04

Dd was changing over and it definitely got done in under two weeks because that's all we had from results day as she was hoping to Dundee and started on 03/09.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 16/09/2016 09:29

Ds change over was quick too.

We have a week to go. I don't know about ds who can never really say how he is feeling but I am terrified quite frankly.

GasLightShining · 16/09/2016 10:51

DS has decided he hasn't got enough underwear so we are off shopping in a bit for that. Not what I had in mind the day before he goes.

hennipenni · 16/09/2016 11:38

Good luck to all the DC's going this weekend, if it helps at all my DD is nearly a week in now, at home she was very quiet and reserved. I've heard from her several times this week and she's really enjoying uni life- she's made lots of new friends from around the world, has joined a couple of societies and has really enjoyed the parties that she's gone to- she has drunk at these but not a great deal (or so she tells me!)

I was very worried about how she would cope but I've been pleasantly surprised at how quickly she seems to have settled.

LIZS · 16/09/2016 11:44

That's good to hear hennipenni. One more sleep here! He's gone upstairs to pack.
