Maybe because it is August tomorrow - but seems to have come round quickly. Had a nice break not thinking about anything since last exam and after full on year choosing, applying, getting rejected, getting offers etc....

Might as well switch off and try and get distracted for the next 18 days....as either way it will be v busy few days/weeks after results to get started on next phase of his life.

PFB -- any old hands out there want to give me a slap?

The board was Edexcel btw.

hennipenni · 19/08/2016 07:13

zazas DD history board was AQA as well, she came away with a D overall for history which was a bit of a shock after her predicted grade. We're not bothered about a remark but just wanted to query it with her tutor and make them aware incase any other DC's were in the same position. She still made her insurance choice which she's happy about.

Hassled · 19/08/2016 07:20

Interesting that History is coming up - DS got a very low mark on one of the papers (British Politics? AQA). He was lucky that his high AS mark and the other paper pulled him up to get the mark he needed overall, but the History teachers at the school yesterday were clearly quite shocked at how badly he'd done on that one paper. And he'd certainly worked his socks off for it - it wasn't lack of revision, so it does sound like there's an anomaly there.

EachandEveryone · 19/08/2016 07:20

Raspberry you sound over the moon. My friends daughter got the same results including further maths and she was rightly shouting about it on Facebook it's just fantastic.

Dunlurking · 19/08/2016 07:27

Rasberry lovely to hear the news of your ds - really nice to hear the outcome after all your postings Smile

So sorry to hear of some History marking being messed up. What is it about History??!! Angry Last year a fantastic student at the dcs' school lost her Oxford History place because of exactly this. She had always delivered A essays but was given a B or maybe even a C. Oxford wouldn't wait for the remark to be sorted! Luckily she is very happy at her insurance. That was AQA - medieval history. Ds did the same course but did slightly better than he usually does and it gave him an A yesterday. History seem to be the unpredictable subject for results. So unfair! They should have second/backup markers for some subjects where marking can be subjective to the marker she says, not understanding what she's talking about but feeling the injustice anyway

zazas · 19/08/2016 07:35

Yes it does seem strange re all the low History marks...unfortunate my DD needs that grade to be an A so hoping it is a clerical error. The should have the scripts returned soon so hopefully see what the 'problem' was...her poor teacher yesterday was quite distressed!

SeaOfDew · 19/08/2016 07:36

Thank goodness I slept, awful day yesterday. Interesting about the history, my nephew got a B overall but one of the grades was a U which was a shock. However that was the least of his problems as the grade for one of his subjects was sent to the Universities incorrectly as a grade lower so he got rejected from insurance.

He did miss the insurance offer by a grade but spoke to them and they will take him on the course but by the time he got through it had filled from clearing. They are looking into whether they do a reversal of their rejection which I think is his best hope. They said otherwise apply through clearing for another course similar they have places on with a view to switching but he is worried about that. Tried a couple of places through clearing who wouldn't drop one grade.

smilingeyes11 · 19/08/2016 07:39

Low history marks this year too after an A last year - and sociology mark was adjusted 10 minutes before DD picked it up from the school, they had to amend to for her - odd

Dunlurking · 19/08/2016 07:49

Keeping my fingers crossed that grade A gets sorted for your dd zazas .

Sorry about your nephew's problem and your awful day Sea. Glad to hear sleep was OK. After all the anticipation at least the results arriving meant we/dcs could finally act on their outcomes.

BestIsWest · 19/08/2016 07:52

Fingers crossed for your nephew sea. Similar happened to my DD on results day a few years ago when a qualification was missed out of the points calculation leaving her short. The course wasn't even in clearing that year so it took 24 hours for the uni to sort out before they eventually accepted her. It's all very traumatic and stressful and Flowers for anyone going through it.

zazas · 19/08/2016 07:54

Dunlurking it does seem unfair doesn't it. Also happened last year to a friend's son but with economics, remarking went up 2 whole grades to an A but it was all too late for his offer so was forced to take a deferred entry. These are all too common stories unfortunately...

Dunlurking · 19/08/2016 07:55

Sorry to hear your dd also suffered in the History smiling eyes Very strange about the Sociology adjustment so late!

Because ds and his classmates knew about the low marks/Oxford disaster in year group above they spent all year working their socks off and being marked harshly by their teachers and I think that was to their favour. I suspect the Modern History group, who got the As last year, while none of the Medieval students did, may have suffered this year, from the sound of it. Waiting for the local paper to publish the school results tomorrow, where you can see the As and As for everyone.

Dunlurking · 19/08/2016 08:02

zazas I never thought of a deferred place still being given. Horrible that your friend's ds was in the same position last year. Possibly the girl we know was offered one in the end but felt fully committed to her insurance by then. It shook the whole school up - we only get a few Oxbridge candidates every year and they are normally Maths/Medicine/Science so a Humanities success was their pride and joy!

zazas · 19/08/2016 08:29

Yes it seems that sciences allow less chance of error the marking although another school I know are having all their biology papers remarked due to similar clerical error concerns. As my DD pointed out at the moment for this one paper she has average a U in both questions to give her an E overall! After the shock she is now she's just finding it amusing as it's impossible everyone in the class received U's for both essays!!!

Cocolepew · 19/08/2016 08:30

Raspberry you don't sound at all smug, I wouldn't blame you even if you did! Congratulations to your DS.
Not sure what Nanas problem is Hmm
I hope your nephew gets sorted Sea.

smilingeyes11 · 19/08/2016 08:38

Thanks Dun, it is fine - she got into her first choice uni so the grades really are academic. Bit of a blow to her, but overall it really didn't make any difference. After a really tough few years I am so chuffed this is over and so proud of what she has achieved. So excited for the next chapter for her too.

NapoleonsNose · 19/08/2016 08:40

We had a similary unexpected lower grade in AQA English Lit/Lang. DD's class were all high performers - AS levels were As, As and a smattering of Bs. Same with their mocks, yet not one managed to get above a C in the A2 exam. DD got a B overall, and was one mark off a B in the exam, which luckily hasn't affected her place, but she was expecting an A or even an A so is a little disappointed.

Thank you so much for all the lovely messages this morning.

I really do hope it is coming together for others. We actually spent much of yesterday supporting my friend's daughter, whose AS results were not as she expected.

jessabell · 19/08/2016 08:54

Son history grade was lower than expected D at A2 was AQA. Was expecting C possible B. Feel a bit sad for him as was his strongest subject. Interesting to hear that other people children have had problems with grades for this subject. He has got into his firm choice as was going uni needing UCAS points. Thought ICT would be a problem but managed a B at A2 as the exam is horrendous. You just can't tell.

zazas · 19/08/2016 09:14

Dunlurking no she's lost her place but it was deffered entry. Unfortunately she also got a lower than expected Economics result, which are also being remarked. One was a resit from last year and she scored 20 marks less, another amusement moment. Her teacher feels she's unlucky as the papers were good and overall marked high, others have scored much higher than her when she's always been grades above them. She certainly worked hard and realistic about how her exams went so I believe her that things don't 'add up'. Still she went out to celebrate her A in maths :) it would just be nice to not still be worrying about it all...plus we have GCSE results next week.....

buckingfrolicks · 19/08/2016 09:20

same issue at my DCs school with history - lower marks all round than expected and the history 'star' student, off to study history, got a D on one paper, unheard of and impossible to believe. No A stars at all in history at this school which has a v strong history dept and usually achieves several a star student grades.
Something amiss somewhere

EllenJanethickerknickers · 19/08/2016 09:23

Blimey, where else can we boast if not on an anonymous forum? I've run into that particular poster before, always grumpy.

No one knows the whole story. My DS1 has done amazingly well and it was a little bit unexpected. He got 3 A*s and achieved his 'aspirational' firm of Warwick. I also have DS2 who has ASD getting his GCSE results next week. I will be equally delighted if he gets his C for English so he can get on to the college course to do a BTEC. He is unlikely to go to university, but that is fine.

This thread has been lovely, generally. Celebrating successes and equally giving really good advice and empathy when required.

Cocolepew · 19/08/2016 09:41

DD still doesn't know if she has a place.
Apparently it might be Sunday before she knows one way or the other Shock

lovedaisychains · 19/08/2016 09:42

Really intertesting re History , my DS was predicted a A but got a B due to very low exam score , had always got A or A* in tests prior to this ( AQA ) luckily for us he was offered his firm .
