A level Results - 18 days - anxiety rising....anyone else??

Maybe because it is August tomorrow - but seems to have come round quickly. Had a nice break not thinking about anything since last exam and after full on year choosing, applying, getting rejected, getting offers etc....

Might as well switch off and try and get distracted for the next 18 days....as either way it will be v busy few days/weeks after results to get started on next phase of his life.

PFB -- any old hands out there want to give me a slap?

My son got the C in English so got his firm choice.

Foundation degree in Creative Writing at Canterbury.

Very happy for him

HereIAm20 · 18/08/2016 16:36

I could see marks on parent portal at 6am BBD needed BBB. Luckily got his place at Queen's Belfast despite lower grade. So mixed feelings re grade v place and may look at remark despite new rulings due to competition in job market. Employers will still look st A level grades as well as degree results in some professions.

Rachie1986 · 18/08/2016 17:07

The head of 6th form is telling me that she will get it looked at by Geography dept (why hasn't it been already)

This couldn't happen before now as the results go into school yesterday but only to exam officer - as staff we didn't get results until today so any discussion about individual modules and papers would start today.. Would also depend which staff are in today. Appreciate it is frustrating for you though.

Thanks to everyone for sharing experiences and advice in here. Lovely to feel not alone.

Hugs and flowers to those still trying to sort things out. These things do have a way of working out but the process is stressful. Good luck to you all.

DD got her insurance place after missing out on her firm. She was disappointed more in herself and her results rather than being disappointed that she didn't get in her firm. Lots of deliberation and a girly lunch later she's decided to stick with her insurance.

shockthemonkey · 18/08/2016 17:44

I'd read the same, NewCross. I took it to mean that all they will do is make sure your awarded marks were added up correctly -- and if there was an error in arithmetic, then that will be rectified. Nobody will be actually re-"marking", they will just be re-"tallying".

My DS missed his predicted A in one subject by 2 UMS (which often equates to just one mark). So we are asking for a re-mark butu with low hopes -- he got into his firm (he got A*BB instead of their requirement of AAB), but since applying has decided that he prefers a different style of uni, and would like to Adjust if possible. He can only do that if the "re-mark" bears fruit and does so before the Adjustment window closes.

The Adjustment window of five days starts today. Have no idea if the remark can be expected within five days or not -- some take two days and some take 22.

Does anyone have experience of this???

Commiserations to anyone disappointed. I really feel for some of you, with your sleeplessness and inability to even eat. Luckily my DS and I were more zen, I'm not really sure why.

jaxxyj · 18/08/2016 17:59

What a roller coaster day! DD got AAB and A* in Epq got into her firm ( Edinburgh) so that was fantastic news, all sorted by 8am. DS made us sweat til 9.30 then called to say he had got DDD ( not unexpected as he had some illness) but that he had not been rejected from his firm, had to wait til 12 then was rejected, then insurance said would take until 5pm to decide ( all this by phone as he wanted to go to college on his own) managed to persuade him to go back to college and talk to some clearing universities even though he wasn't technically in clearing. He has only gone and managed to blag a place that he loved when he went to the open day but thought it was too risky high at BBC. Walks in blasé at 4.30 saying he knew it would all get sorted eventually! Meanwhile I have sweated buckets, kept trying to make sure DD knew I was really proud of her etc. in turn being really proud of them both and been frustrated when 2 hours went by with no info! His insurance have said they will release him and Kingston have said they'll keep his place but I will be mighty released when it is all official! And people say - oh it must've been hard having twins when they were young!( sorry for the rant- glad to see so many people have it in the bag of are getting there!)

icebeing
If you think the UK is pressured, have a look at South Korea or India or China or Thailand or France or even the US
University Entrance is the most high pressure point in the academic calendar of every country

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/08/2016 18:04

Phew. Dd's first choice just rang. They filled up through clearing but due to it being an administrator error on their part they have to give her a place.
That might help people in the future maybe.

NickyEds · 18/08/2016 18:09

Does anyone have any experience of dropping two AS subjects? My neice did very well (3 As hooray!)and got into her firm choice, but my nephew got his AS results and didn't do as well as he'd hoped. He got BCDD, school are applying gentle pressure to drop both D grade subjects, leaving him only 2 a levels. One of the Ds was in maths where he knows what went wrong, he's got B's in every module but one in which he got a U(stats) and described it as a 'disaster'. He was hoping to re sit stats this year and continue with maths but school seem to prefer dropping it?? This seems mad to me?

buckingfrolicks · 18/08/2016 18:19

Jazzj I have twins and exam results have always been fraught in consequence! Harder working DD always does better than just as capable DS. And even though we try vv hard not to compare, they're not stupid. AAA versus ABC. It's so difficult to balance appropriate responses. Glad your DS got it all sorted to his satisfaction!

jaxxyj · 18/08/2016 18:35

bucking I know exactly what you mean, luckily DS is the more laid back one , just hard on the stress factor for us!

Diglet · 18/08/2016 18:41

justdontevenfuckingstart

How stressful Confused
I'm glad that it worked out ok. Did the mistake effect her accommodation?

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/08/2016 19:00

diglet no idea! Haven't been able to think about anything.
We were so shocked this morning that she didn't get Lincoln that we haven't thought about anything else.
She went over and over everything and KNEW she would get it. So when she didn't it was a real wtf moment.
We'll sort everything, must have some recourse through it being their (Lincoln or ucas?) error tho. Everything can get sorted. And I mean that for everyone.

kath6144 · 18/08/2016 19:15

NickyEds - can he carry on with maths, do a re-take, maybe get a tutor to give him a little extra help.

My DS got B and U in chemistry last year, overall D, but U was due to being in hospital in middle of ASs. He re-took module, asked us at xmas for a tutor to help him with resit and papers - he turned it into an A this year and A overall in Chemistry. And he got his uni place to do Chemistry! Money well spent, she gave him confidence.

A friends DD dropped 2 and picked up a new AS 2yrs ago. She was intending to do an extra year to take new AS to full A level but got into her preferred uni with 2 A levels and the AS, plus an interview. Not a RG but a decent one and the course she wanted.

BaconAndAvocado · 18/08/2016 19:48

Phew, my week long tension headache is finally over!

DS1 got A* A A B and got his first choice, so he's off to Manchester to do Chemical Engineering.

He hasn't stopped working over the past 2 years, we are so very proud Grin

He's getting ready to go out for an all-night booze up Shock

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/08/2016 19:54

bacon we need an update in the morning as to what state they are all in! Was supposed to be two pub crawls in neighbouring towns tonight but they have been merged to our town..............

hennipenni · 18/08/2016 20:07

My DD and her college friends have gone to a student night and I'm told drinks are 2-4-1, should be interesting in the morning!

Diglet · 18/08/2016 20:15

Justdontevenfuckingstart. I went with my nephew to look at Lincoln for maths last year and was really impressed with the place. The maths course was brand new so DN didn't apply but we both thought it looked like a brilliant place to be a student. I liked the look of the new science buildings and the library and the accommodation options were good too.

Rachie1986 · 18/08/2016 20:21

NickyEds depending on the school and board etc, it might be that the students will do no more stats at all. So he would have to learn it all again on his own as well a doing c3 c4 and another applied (presuming m1 or d1?). This is much harder than resiting a core module as the skills from c1 and c2 are used and built on in c3 and c4 so students get practice and generally better at the AS core modules without much extra work. It will be a lot of work to study s1 again without studying further stats, and there will be very time in lessons for support and help due to the a2 content.

Does that make sense? We don't stop students resiting s1 but we do warn against it often due to the extra work (and results we've seen previously with little improvement).

Saying that, 2 A2 subjects may well be tough to get into uni with. Presumably they are suggesting he takes another as as well? Or just continues with 2? I'm guessing fast tracking another a-level in a yr isn't an option.

Tough one. What does he feel about it?

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/08/2016 20:27

Diglet she loved Lincoln to be honest I haven't heard a bad word about it plus we are in Norfolk so if anything happens we are not far away.

hobobulate · 18/08/2016 20:33

just checking back in to see how everyone is doing. I really feel for those still up in the air - sending positive vibes that you can get things sorted and be happy with the outcome.
DS has headed out into town with his friends - I don't expect he will return until the early hours, and yes, I expect he may be a bit the worse for wear!
I am totally done in and have gone to bed!! Going to read for a bit then hopefully get a good night's sleep.Grin
Only 6 days till GCSE results - joy!Hmm

BaconAndAvocado · 18/08/2016 20:40

justdon't haha that's a great idea.

I've told DS1 to have a great time, look after himself and, if he's going to, to vomit before he gets home!

He doesn't go out drinking very much at all but when he does it gene real ends badly Hmm

RandomMess · 18/08/2016 20:47

Well I was busy all day helping the clearing team at work.

Sadly DD didn't get her grades (not sure if it was nice to know to be prepared or awful as I was so sad for her) however she is happy with the course she has chosen through clearing.

Best wishes to all of your DC.

Clearing is so complicated just double checking that a student as the necessary minimum requirements is just like ShockShockShock - I can understand why mistakes get made...

dottygamekeeper · 18/08/2016 20:48

DD is just heading out clubbing for the first time, as she didn't reach 18 until near the end of exams and has been to busy to go out since. She's wearing high heels - very unusual for he, and as she is tall already, she is now towering over me (we've just measure her, she is 6' 1 in heels. I'm worried she will have a few too many drinks (esp as she never normally drinks much at all) and will fall off the heels.

Good luck to all of those for whom today didn't go as well as planned, hoping you all get things sorted soon.
