Maybe because it is August tomorrow - but seems to have come round quickly. Had a nice break not thinking about anything since last exam and after full on year choosing, applying, getting rejected, getting offers etc....

Might as well switch off and try and get distracted for the next 18 days....as either way it will be v busy few days/weeks after results to get started on next phase of his life.

PFB -- any old hands out there want to give me a slap?

And amazingly with us her A* as level wasn't reported. Scanning over first choice now being given that should have been offered this morning! Sending my best wishes to you all x

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 18/08/2016 10:56

Ready my son had a place to do Mechanical Engineering but missed the grade, he has been given a place on the BEng with the option to move to the MEng if he gets more than 55% in 1st year. It's his first choice Uni so he is very happy (so are we!) And he should still end up doing the MEng if he doesn't spend his first year messing around

hairymairyfromthedairy · 18/08/2016 10:57

ice not really out of the blue but he was predicted to do better than he has & in my estimation he put in a lot of work - I think it was too much work with retaking AS levels - hindsight is a wonderful thing & if I had the situation again I would advise him to start again

oenophilia · 18/08/2016 11:02

He just came downstairs and went straight out into the garden. Then came back in and started talking about thing he needed washed for a camp next week. Walked away and then said, over his shoulder, oh it's all alright by the way. FFS. Has he no idea what happened to my blood pressure over the last 24 hours??

DD2 accepted by her firm (York) with a dropped grade.... but got an A* in subject related EPQ - so maybe that helped. Everyone really happy here.
DD1 went through an anxious remark a few years ago but was eventually successful (the day before the UCAS deadline).......so keep strong all those "pending"

fatowl · 18/08/2016 11:03

Just lurked here so far but DD got BCC and has been confirmed at Swansea to do Engineering Foundation. So proud of her as she struggled a bit with A-level Maths and worked so hard. She was very close to a B in Maths (got a C), but she has her first choice, so probably won't bother with a remark.

Congrats to all who have done well, and thinking of those who have a stressful few days ahead - it will work out.

oenophilia · 18/08/2016 11:04

Newcastle to do Civil Engineering btw

Ginmere · 18/08/2016 11:09

I'm looking at adjustment vacancies now Diglet but not sure if DS will change or not. TBH, we were thrilled this morning that he had been offered Birmingham - we live in Kent and DS failed the eleven plus and got some variable GCSE results in the local non-selective school. He managed to scrape into grammar for sixth form and it's been an absolute transformation. If we had been told the day he failed the eleven plus that he would end up going to a Russell Group university, we would have laughed out loud.

Birmingham have emailed to confirm first choice accommodation this morning as well so it's a tough call.

Sotaku · 18/08/2016 11:12

Hairy, I understand what you mean about out of the blue. DD was devastated by his results. He dropped down a grade in each subject compared to his AS results and he thought he'd done a lot better than last year. He was close to tears on the phone but fortunately he got and accepted an unconditional so I had to keep reminding him it doesn't matter (I know it really does to him though). If it wasn't for that, he'd been in exactly the same position as your son since his results aren't even good enough for the uni he was going to use as insurance. My advice would have been to try clearing and, if no luck there, resit the exams next year since, like your DD, his heart was set on going to uni. He stayed around the college after picking up his results though so I'm sure he's seen a few other people who are also upset with their results. Hopefully, that will help them see they're not alone in this. My heart goes out to you and your DD.

hellsbells99 · 18/08/2016 11:15

DD got what she needed and is off to her first choice Leeds!
For all those that have not got offers, do look through clearing if they still want to go to uni. A couple of DD's friends have managed to get good places even with very dropped grades. Good luck.

hairymairyfromthedairy · 18/08/2016 11:21

We have a possible foundation course at one of his original 5 choices Sotaku but his first choice still haven't rejected him bizarrely

almondpudding · 18/08/2016 11:33

DS got a U in one of his A levels. He got a D overall for the three AS units. Is it possible to now cash that in as an AS, or do they not allow you to do that if you sat the A2 units?

Diglet · 18/08/2016 11:38

Ginmere. What a perfect example of why grammar schools should be scrapped. Smile Last year my DS went through adjustment but it made a big difference to the 'level' of his Uni IYSWIM - even though he loved his original choice it would have seemed daft not to 'upgrade' especially as his original firm choice course was in clearing with even lower entry requirements. I'm not sure that's as relevant if your son is at Birmingham.

If he is curious there is no harm in him having a phone around as you can hold on to your firm choice while you do it.

Peebles1 · 18/08/2016 11:42

Hairy doesn't that mean they're still considering him, and he should phone them up and plead his cause? I'm no expert but that's the impression I got from PPs. Good luck.

2rebecca · 18/08/2016 11:58

Usedtobeapaxmanfan my son is doing a mech eng MEng and says there are a lot of folk who move from BEng to MEng and vv. He was worried he'd be demoted to BEng this year as needed 70% to stay MEng but was OK. The main advantage of starting with an MEng in Scotland is you have the funding for the extra year sorted at the start with no extra paperwork.
It seems mad that in England the exam boards don't text or email kids their results like they do in Scotland.

BestIsWest · 18/08/2016 11:59

DS has been accepted by his insurance but is adamant that only his first choice will do and so is going back to do a couple of fast track A levels ( he did a BTEC so had his results in July ). There seems to be no process for declining his place though. (Disclaimer, I'm in work and going by what he's saying by text) He's worried that he's holding a place that could go to someone else. He's phoned and emailed the uni.

hairymairyfromthedairy · 18/08/2016 12:01

We have wondered that peebles but it seems so unlikely given the gap between their requirements & what he's got
His head of sixth form did say some unis would rather take someone who chose them & who they've met etc than someone going through clearing

electricflyzapper · 18/08/2016 12:02

Bestiswest, my ds has just been on the UCAS site to accept his offer. There were 3 options: accept offer, turn down offer and go into clearing, or turn down offer and leave UCAS. I think that is what your son is looking for. HTH

Peebles1 · 18/08/2016 12:05

Well Hairy 'shy bairns get nowt' so he's nothing to lose by ringing up to check, if he's feeling up to it. You never know!

Sotaku · 18/08/2016 12:08

I'm guessing he's feeling a bit sore at the moment so hasn't rung his first choose to ask yet. It does sound promising though. I've got my fingers crossed for him. Let us know what happens.

Sotaku · 18/08/2016 12:08

Oops, forgot to say my last comment was aimed at hairy.

BestIsWest · 18/08/2016 12:11

Thank you electricFly, I 'll get him to look at that. Or I will try toHmm.

zazas · 18/08/2016 12:22

Terrible morning here - my DD didn't get her grades and therefore no offers. She is devastated. However the teachers are completely confused about her grades and have requested her scripts back (she is deferred entry so no need for priority booking). She got her predicted A (4 marks off an A*) for Maths so that was great but a B in History due to an E in one paper - she has only ever had A including 100 in her USM points for her AS last year. She doesn't even know how that is possible??!! Having said that they are asking for all the History papers to be looked at as all the papers are low grades. Her other paper is Economics and her teacher has asked for those to be looked at - as she has received low marks (including 20 marks less for an AS resit) - once again it makes no sense. She felt the exams went really well, and she is not someone who bottles in exams and she worked hard...Feel so sorry for her. Also puts everything back into the air...sigh...

hairymairyfromthedairy · 18/08/2016 12:23

peebles that's made me laugh for the first time today so thanks for that! He's trying his first choice now
sotaku I think he was going with what school said about being patient but we want to know one way or another!
