Biomedical engineering?

Someone has just asked me what to think of the following universities for biomedical engineering:

Kent, Sheffield, Southampton, Cardiff, Loughborough, Surrey.

I am officially clueless but would welcome opinions from the informed! TIA

I'd say Sheffield, thats where I did my degree in biomedical engineering - loved it, went onto to do a PhD in the subject too.

Sheffield is a great university and great city to study in.

Thanks! Sheffield would have been my (uninformed) first choice because my perception is that it's a nice place to be a student. What work do you do?

I have colleagues in engineering/materials at both Sheffield and Loughborough: both are good unis which are traditionally strong in engineering with good courses. Loughborough, in particular, is getting more popular and the entry requirements are rising!

Quite often the "best" courses are the ones with the higher entry requirements. I think when choosing a university you should also consider where you would like to live and the reputation of the university in the field of study. What do the students do after the degree - they can't all do PhDs? What employers are involved with the university and which course offers the best career path in terms of specialisms or quality of research and projects?

bobo - i used to work on bone cements for maxillofacial reconstruction but after post-docing for a few years i manage research within a Uni dept which i love. I'm still at Sheffield Uni though and still work through collaborations with some of my old lecturers, plus some of the lecturers i work with in my current department teach on the bioengineering degree.

I'd suggest if they can afford it to come to a few open days and get a feel for the place.
