Does anybody know if an English student in Germany can claim any benefits if they do not get a job immediately?
Or, do they have to come back to England?

They don't have to come back to England (EU rules give you the right to live anywhere in the EU) but they would only be entitled to standard unemployment benefits if they have worked there and paid the equivalent of national insurance contributions, see

www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-germany

If they have not worked in Germany but have paid (enough) NI contributions in the UK and can prove this they can get social security benefits.

Thank you for that link, it is very informative. There is plenty of additional information there as well.
