Eldest dd got in touch and brilliant news. She has accommodation (Bristol Uni) and has paid the deposit. Smile

So both of them have really nice accommodation for next year. What a relief.

Headofthehive55 · 11/02/2016 22:38

They must be happy if they aren't talking much!

I get to FaceTime mine several times a week which is lovely. I always let her ask me though so I don't feel I'm intruding!

hellsbells99 · 12/02/2016 07:59

Littleham - glad Rus have accommodation sorted out. DD still hasn't.
DD2 is off to visit her tonight so I am sure I will get a report back tomorrow.

hellsbells99 · 12/02/2016 09:46

Rus should be yours!

1234Littleham · 12/02/2016 14:04

Lets hope Rus isn't an added extra in the accommodation. Grin

Just wondering whether anyone has looked into the Meningitis B vaccine for their university dc?

By the way there is a petition for children to be vaccinated if you want to sign and forward to friends / family.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/108072

Quietlygoingmad67 · 18/02/2016 13:04

My daughter had a meningitis vaccine but unsure what it covered as she organised appointment etc! Think is was xwy or something similar!!

Quietlygoingmad67 · 18/02/2016 13:06

Okay I probably should have googled before I posted - she had the ACWY not B! Need to do some research into the B vaccine now Hmm

hellsbells99 · 18/02/2016 13:07

DD1 had the Men ACWY vaccine last year which is the one recommended for students. DD2 needs to get hers done.

1234Littleham · 18/02/2016 13:12

Yes it would have been ACWY.

The B vaccine is currently not available on NHS (just privately) but as the B strain is a really nasty one I wondered whether anyone had considered it yet.

I have enquired and it is only really feasible in the summer holidays as it is a two part vaccine so they have to be back long enough to takes both doses. Also it is expensive.

HocusCrocus · 18/02/2016 13:48

I looked at the Men B vaccine last year before DS went but had left it too late to get both parts done. Apparently there is a shortage of the vaccine at the moment but I think I will keep an eye out and get DS done in the summer holidays if they have supplies then. (There's a couple of threads in chat but obviously a lot of people more concerned about infants. )

1234Littleham · 18/02/2016 13:53

Drat - how did I miss this? Seems some unis may have the odd vaccination session so worth keeping an eye out.

Just had a message off DD they have a ballot system for second year accommodation and she is 282 out of 295 so it looks as if she will be about 20 mins away from the centre of town and she might not have such a pretty room like she does now. The positive side is that in her final year she will go to the top of the ballot when they get to live in the picturesque college grounds.

DD seems to be suffering with a delayed version of freshers flu and has a hacking cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis.

Hope all DC's are doing well now they are all half way through first year.

voilets · 22/02/2016 14:50

Half a year already!! Never thought about that sassy. My DS is stuck hard in to courseworks at the moment and feeling the pressure. Did fine in exams though - very fine actually - DS said the examiner must have been high when he marked one of his papers! Grin

He has managed to get a buddy recently that has helped. Also is seeing his personal tutor this week and went to one group help session so I feel my Ds is trying to get some of the assistance on offer to help with a very challenging course.

Accommodation sorted - 2 mins from uni with friends from halls so that hopefully will be fine.

Just still finding it hard not to worry. Just getting used to one having flown the nest.

I forgot how much work goes into a degree and how self - organised one has to be.

MrsBartlet · 23/02/2016 15:51

Oh gosh sassy - hope your dd's accomodation is ok. I think my dd hears about room ballot this week. Like you say, though, yours will get first pick next year!

Dd is coming home for Easter in 2 1/2 weeks. Can't believe that will be 2/3 of the first year done. It goes so quickly. Is it wrong that I thought she had better start doing more extra-curricular which will help her when she starts looking for a job? Grin

Horsemad · 23/02/2016 17:04

Still no word on exam results Hmm I've just sent him a text asking again if he's had them yet - nothing back from him.

I suspect he's had them and they aren't great tbh. I am itching to ring the dept to find out if they've had their results, but know this would be A Bad Thing To Do...

He's been allocated the same halls for next year, so he's pleased about that. Wonder if he can pay a storage rate to avoid us hauling all his stuff back home for the summer? That'd be good! Smile

1234Littleham · 24/02/2016 18:59

Don't do it Horsemad Grin

Can't believe how quickly it is all going.

SparklesandBangs · 24/02/2016 19:14

DD1 has managed to find 3 people to share with next year and to secure a lease on a house for a very reasonable amount so that is all sorted.

We had a medical emergency last week, I knew she was unwell as she had booked a GP appointment for herself without prompting, it turns out she was quite ill and needed hospital treatment, she arranged by herself to get a taxi to the next town where here appointment was and to take a friend with her. She even took a phone charger and a book, but no clean clothes, toothbrush cash or snacks.

DD2 was on there way to visit her as it was half term, so she had to get off the train at a different stop and get a taxi to the hospital, it was all then a bit of a flap as DD1 had to stay in on a drip overnight so couldn't be responsible for DD2 in halls. Fortunately the university were very understanding and allowed a friend to be responsible. It was a very good example of standing on your own two feet for DD2 who is looking to go to uni next year.

They were reunited the next afternoon.

NiceCardigan · 24/02/2016 19:19

Ds did a surprise visit home on Friday. He was on the door step with flowers for me when I got back from work Shock

He had been visiting some friends at other universities during his reading week and thought he call in on the way back. It was nice to see him but a bit surprising!

Horsemad · 24/02/2016 19:34

How lovely NiceCardigan Smile

DS has had his results but all is not well. He said he is having to re-sit 2 modules but has volunteered no further info, so not sure why it has gone wrong.

He is currently ignoring texts and calls. Probably avoiding a discussion on what he did or didn't do I imagine.

I don't like parenting, I've decided. Hmm

1234Littleham · 24/02/2016 19:34

How lovely NiceCardigan. Smile

Hope your dd1 is over the worst of her illness Sparkles. They are SUCH a worry.

I had a full week of worry when dd2 found Tinder Shock but luckily she got fed up with the hassle & deleted it.

FoolsAndJesters · 24/02/2016 21:52

Horsemad Does he have to wait long to resit. My DS missed one exam due to an operation in a Jan/fab set of exams and had to resit the following August.

Horsemad · 24/02/2016 22:39

Yep, his re-sits are in late August Fools. He's got Sem 2 exams before that, so if he doesn't come up with the goods in those, it will be pointless I imagine Hmm

hellsbells99 · 25/02/2016 10:44

DD hasn't got her results yet - I think they are due at the end of the month. She is expecting to have to do a resit in August but is very matter of fact about it. Her tutor told them before the exams that most 1st years on her course end up doing a resit.

voilets · 25/02/2016 18:43

It is so hard for them all. So many exams - resits and coursework. My Ds has managed to miss one small component - he has to find out how! I'm amazed he has got his courseworks in on time - in his school deadlines were not really an issue. They weren't a hwk school more a revision heavy school.

When I was at uni - no exams until end of year. There is a lot of pressure for them.

Horsemad - being a parent certainly has its ups and downs!!
