Thought we might need a new thread for the results...

This is the link with early clearing places & someone is updating it.

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Clearing_Contacts_Directory

Some schools seems to be offering some help with ringing around, but mostly it is down to the kids (who have to do all the phoning) & parents giving advice.

THREE !!! seagull, oh my goodness.

Hopefully three sets of good news for you on Thursday morning. Are they all heading off in the same general direction, or scattered all over the place?

UselessNess · 11/08/2014 22:52

HERE is the official UCAS guidance on clearing

Last year there was a Ucas Clearing App but I can't see it this year Confused. It was a bit rubbish so maybe it's been scrapped.

Make sure you know what to do if you get a 'changed course offer'. It's been mentioned down thread.

boys3 · 11/08/2014 22:53

I know it should be a time for circling the wagons, standing firm shoulder to shoulder, battening down the hatches, riding the storm out, Dunkirk spirit, and generally mixing metaphors......but

I suppose there are near misses and near misses, and for admissions I do wonder whether it is more of a (dark) art than a science.

Lets say offer is AAA. AAA or better all fine. But then there is a whole set of ways of missing the offer

BBB, BBC - probably not too much hope?

AAB - with the B not in the degree subject might give more ground for straw clutching than AAB but where the B is the subject that a DC hopes to study?

AAB, or AA*B - again maybe reasonable grounds for optimism but maybe less so if the B was in the subject intended for Uni study?

AAC - but one of the A* in the subject to be studied - maybe not all hope lost?

When I started thinking about it there are so many permutations that maybe much as our DCs (& us!) might want a quick decision if they do miss, I can see why it is perhaps not quite so straightforward at the Uni decision making end, particularly as they don't have sight of UMS scores.

Although its a school night Wine is very tempting at this juncture.

TeenyfTroon · 12/08/2014 13:00

Holding hands with seagull, 3 is worse than 2!!

Thanks for your explanation littleham. UCAS should take you on!

seagull70 · 12/08/2014 13:04

Have just received the Source supplement through from the Telegraph with lots of useful info on there re clearing too, thanks to everyone for the rest of the info.

Clearing vacancies will appear on clearing.telegrapgh.co.uk from Thursday onwards plus there is an app I think?

I have one applying to Kings (with Warwick as Insurance) and two applying to Reading (with UWE as insurance).

Good luck everyone - I am trying to stay calm here Grin

Littleham · 12/08/2014 13:32

Thanks. Contact me UCAS with an offer & please may I redesign the system while I'm at it, with the help of people on this thread?!! When I ask around friends, everyone is really confused about clearing, with most people sticking their heads firmly in the sand

The Irish CAO system is soooo much simpler. I'm sure it has flaws, but I have yet to spot one.

Littleham · 12/08/2014 13:35

Going out to buy Source supplement now seagull, thanks.

Good luck - three 18 year olds - OMG. Get in lots of Cake Cake Cake

Needmoresleep · 12/08/2014 13:40

How many more sleeps? Are we counting Wednesday night?

eatyourveg · 12/08/2014 13:44

Second the Irish system. CAO looked confusing when all the gumph came through but it really is so much simpler.

Littleham · 12/08/2014 13:45

Hmm. Think you need to change your name to nomoresleep.

OP posts:
secretsquirrels · 12/08/2014 14:45

Needmoresleep Not sure about Wednesday night. STEP results go online at midnight.
Assuming DS can access them he might find he's done enough for his insurance. So then we could sleep? I doubt it!
He isn't hugely worried about the A levels,(although as time goes by all early confidence dissipates).

UselessNess · 12/08/2014 15:47

Last year when my son got a changed course offer it was really easy to get through to his Uni's and really easy to get through to UCAS. We were a bit confused as it's not immediately obvious what you are meant to do but everyone was very helpful. The guy at UCAS was great. He seemed genuinely happy that my DS was happy Grin DS was confirmed on the course he wanted by 10'ish and it was reflected on the UCAS website immediately.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 12/08/2014 16:23

That's good to know Ness. Ds2 needs 3 As for his first choice MGeol with year abroad and AAB for the same course at his Insurance. We've been running lots of 'what if' scenarios today around alternative course offers.

friendface · 12/08/2014 16:25

The Guardian also seems to have a fair bit on clearing and adjustment. I think their clearing Q&A on results day will be quite useful if any of our dc find themselves in that position.

Shootingatpigeons · 12/08/2014 16:41

DD has just informed me that unlike her sister who stayed up reading "boy in Striped Pyjamas" (so she would appreciate that it wasn't that important in the scheme of things) and pressing the refresh button on the UCAS site from midnight, she is going to have a restless night trying to sleep and having nightmares and get up at 6.30 to check!

BeckAndCall · 12/08/2014 17:05

Those in the know on TSR (ie the mods) have said categorically that UCAS will not update at midnight- it will be between 6 and 8.

And also, I didn't know, once track has gone 'live' it doesn't update again until midday, so if you don't have a decision 'up' when it first updates, you won't see any change until at least noon.

friendface · 12/08/2014 17:28

With UCAS is the set up the same as when they received offers? So will they get an email to indicate when track has updated and, if so, is there no point in refreshing track until they've received the email?

secretsquirrels · 12/08/2014 17:41

BeckAndCall UCAS is definitely not up at midnight but someone upthread said that the Admissions Testing Service which uploads STEP results on to it's website is supposed to be live at midnight.

Timetraveller · 12/08/2014 17:49

This is from the UCAS website:

^From 08:00 we start to update records for all applicants and you can reply to offers if required.
You can check at intervals to see if your application status has changed.^

So I think you can keep checking for it to update.

Here's the link.

ok, I am nearly going crazy now - the wait is killing me and DD1 . Just relieved we have been invited round to a friends tomorrow night to watch Great British Bake Off then have a go ourselves at the 3D baking challenge - sounds good distraction therapy ! She's going to roll into Uni as she's baking at home tonight just trying to keep busy and stop going stir crazy !!

traceyinrosso70 · 12/08/2014 19:42

just discovered that DD1s firm have advertised clearing vacancies for her course still at AAA (an integrated masters) but the BA equivalent course (which they said they would offer her a place on if she dropped to AAB) has dropped its offer in clearing to BBB - am I right in thinking then that if she drops as low as BBB (predicted AAA) she is likely to still end up at her firm ?? (but on the BA rather than the Masters). Trying not to read into this too much but could it be an indication that either a) those who have Oxbridge offers and got Southampton as insurance have all met their offers or b) all the language grades are down this year ??

Littleham · 12/08/2014 20:10

Nearly every university is offering language places in clearing (barring Oxford / Cambridge etc). My dd1 now has the Southampton BA on her clearing list!!! (especially as they have accommodation for clearing people)

Obviously, there is no guarantee, but I hope it's a good sign traceyinrosso.

OP posts:
traceyinrosso70 · 12/08/2014 20:21

Me too Littleham ! Hope your DD1 gets her firm/insurance but we got very good vibes from Southampton in terms of staff very approachable and helpful and high up in league table terms if that's important to her. They have built quite a bit of new student accommodation this year so that's presumably why they have spaces .

ISingSoprano · 12/08/2014 20:22

Evening all - just wanted to offer a bit of moral support. Ds was waiting for A level results this time last year so I feel your pain!

Ds missed his grades and on results day his Track was not updated. We had been told by his firm choice uni that this was the cue to call them. He did and got straight through to someone who was clearly expecting his call. He was made an offer for a different but similar course and accepted it. By 8.30am the bottle of fizz was open. He has thoroughly enjoyed year 1 and has no regrets.

Good luck everyone Grin
