DS wants to study this at uni. He's currently considering open days and I'm wondering if anyone here could recommend any particular university?

What kinda of grades are we looking at?

Horsemad · 26/05/2014 18:02

He should get As.

I'd go down the top unis then.

Ucl's course looks very good. I went to Durham myself, and the Computer Science degree there is also excellent.

Can't go wrong with any at the top of this list really. Is all about what type of list style he wants to lead. Cosmopolitan city, historic and traditional or somewhere in between?

Thank you Cardinal, he's looking at that list, has picked 11 to look at!! I'm hoping to narrow it down a bit Grin

They all look amazing, so am hoping someone can say X is great or Y isn't! Smile

Well I'm an oldy worldy collegiate, formal dinner in gowns sort of girl, so I'd recommend anything old!

Personal taste though. Little sister is at Nottingham now, and is loving it. Party lifestyle for sure.

SueDNim · 26/05/2014 18:34

What is he studying at A level?

Cardinal · 26/05/2014 18:43

That's the thing though! When you've got straight As there aren't bad options. All the top unis are great - that's why they are top! They just provide different experiences and you have to work out what you are looking for in a uni outside of the academics - so the town, the culture, the sport, the social side...

It's almost easier if you're getting three Cs - you can be a bit more sceptical about the quality of the study!

Horsemad · 26/05/2014 18:46

Sue, he's doing Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

Cardinal, Nottingham is on his list Smile I don't tjink he knows what he actually wants from uni - will have a chat with him and try to get him to think about it.

What about Manchester? I did computer science there. Fantastic city and lots of opportunities at Manchester. They used to offer a year abroad as part of the course to Berkeley if your grades were high enough which I thought was amazing - although my grades were unfortunately not high enough!

JimBobplusasprog · 26/05/2014 19:51

Cambridge. The course is awesome.

Horsemad · 26/05/2014 20:34

Cambridge want AAA and I don't think he'll get that sadly. He did say he'd like to go to Oxbridge, but unless there's a miracle, it ain't gonna happen!

Plinky, when did you study ay M"cr? I must admit, M'cr has jumped out at me, not sure why. Just think the city has a lot going for it.

I've just asked what apart from the study does he want from his uni experience. His answer? A city that has 4G Shock

We're doomed...!

I was at Manchester a couple of years ago so quite recent. Although I was a mature student so my experience will be a little different. Manchester is a fantastic city, I moved there at 20 and had the best time ever even before I went to uni there. Manchester Uni has a great course and facilities, they do expect you to hit ground running. My only negative was I didn't feel their pastoral care was that good. Feel free to PM me if I can answer any specifics for you

Horsemad · 26/05/2014 21:23

Thanks Plinky. Smile

Boys3, that clip was brilliant! Made me laugh and also a bit teary! Thanks Smile

Have a look for places that offer placements as part of the degree.

It is a real CV booster if you have spent a year in industry, but shorted placements are good as well.

Horsemad · 27/05/2014 11:37

Thank you creamteas.

I would agree with the rankings - so I guess you need to work out which are achievable with his expected grades (I wimped out of applying to Imperial, and went to Oxford instead back in the dark ages)

So yes, campus vs city, old vs new are the sort of decisions you need him to make....

Horsemad · 27/05/2014 12:11

Thanks Stealth. He's leaning more to the city type uni I think. Quite keen on London/ Manchester/Liverpool.
