social work degree - interview help needed

Thats it really. I have applied and didnt think I would get to the interview stage, anyway my application is being considered and I have been called in for an interview.

I think the interview will be quite intense, its from 9.30 until 5.30. A written test, a group discussion and then an interview with at least two members of staff.

Has anyone any advice for Social Work. If I do pass the interview, whilst studying, what is the work load like. Is it working every night and all weekend and watching to telly at all.

Hi, I can't tell you much but noticed no-one had replied. I am in Human Resources and sometimes deal with Social Workers in that capacity.
I think they do have a heavy work-load once they're in work, and the stress of dealing with social issues can be difficult for some people to deal with especially dealing with children at risk.

So its good that the selection process is rigorous as it should help both you and the assessors make the right decision.

Can the uni you've applied to put you in touch with some students to ask about the course/study load etc?

Have you shadowed or spoken to sw to get realistic overview of role and demands
Pattern work depends on Job you do. edt work out of hours.normal hours 9-5
All professional jobs are demanding and any newly qualified grad does feel stretched

Have not spoken or shadowed anyone. Although, a friend of a friend is a social worker, so I need to meet up to discuss.

I am absolutely torn, do I just stay as I am, or do I give it a go ? I know the only person to answer that question is me. I keep thinking I am probably best just staying where I am, but every time I think I should give it a go !

I have interviewed for a similar degree course. During the group interview we look for how people interact with others so show active listening skills and an interest in others. It is amazing how many people just jump in to show off how much they know and pay no attention to others.
Shadowing someone is a great idea. As social workers work in a very wide range of settings it would be worth research on the range of client groups they work with, the settings they work in and the type of support they provide.

You need to demonstrate a realistic understanding of role,and academc ability
Ask yourself honestly why want to train,and what motivates you about sw
Have you considered placements,travel to u I,o you need childcare when at uni?

The role I first thought about was a Hospital Social Worker, this is what first got my interest. Having had major health problems myself. On thinking about this and before my illness, I ran a Children's Nursery for eleven years so I have Early Years qualifications including a Foundation Degree in Early Years. With this in mind I am also very interested in Child Protection and also Adoption.
So Social Work appeals to me in different areas.

My children are now teenagers. So, I now feel at a loose end. So the studying will fill some of my spare time.

sw isn't for faint hearted or unsure,it's not a fill time degree.full on with placements

Have you considered impact on your teens if you're on placement
