Ive been looking at doing a design and technology secondary education with qualified teacher status degree for some time now. planning on starting in 2013.

I have 3 kids. DTG's who will be 2 and a half and DS who.will be 4 by the time I start.

future DH earns 25.5k a year. we have a mortgage etc...

am I mad to think ill be able to manage a teaching degree with three young children in tow?!! ill have mum and mil support as well with childcare.

my youngest was 2 when I did my teaching degree. It is doable if you have the support at home. (For example, I often had Sundays when I didn't even have time to dress as I was on the computer from sunrise to sunset in order to work)

If it is anything like my course then the school experiences and the uni time is well planned and the majority of assignments are due during uni time which means you have more resources (time, library etc) in order to complete them and this allows all your energy to be put into your teaching experiences.

BUT you need to be prepared that there will be fewer and fewer jobs out there when you finish especially within DT as there is less and less focus on this area of the curriculum and a lot of schools will only give the bare minimum time to it.

I thought Design and Technology was a shortage subject which attracts a bursary for PGCEs?

buttress · 28/04/2012 15:07

For me it is a toss up between DT and Geography. I've been a town planner for 20 years so I'm wondering if I would get better paid when I qualify if I do geography.

buttress · 01/05/2012 12:41

Not sure where you'd find that kind if info out Migsy. Tes website maybe??

I've decided to apply for geography as a first choice as there are more jobs and I'll go for Food Tech as a second choice. There aren't many places left for 2012 now so I might not have much choice anyway!
