Anybody with a child going to University of YORK this year? Read this!

Have namechanged - obviously.

I am a York Uni alumnus and live in York. Today I got an e-mail from accommodation services at the uni asking basically if we wanted to rent or give rent free a room to a new student.

The e-mail says 'This year there has been an increase in applications to the University of York from new first year international postgraduate students and also an increase in applications from new undergraduate students. Accommodation Services are therefore making contingency arrangements for those students who do not have a guaranteed offer of accommodation.

We would like to hear from alumni living in York, either in their own house or in rented accommodation, who have a spare room and are willing to help a new student when they arrive in York in October'

When I went to York they guaranteed accommodation to first years. I think they've stuffed up their offers this year and have too many new students for the space that or some slippage on something they are building. they are asking for short term and longer term options.

Anyway - my point in posting it here is that I rather doubted that they have notified the students yet. I hope I'm wrong. However if I had a child starting uni this year I would jolly well want to know now rather than in a week or two so am posting it here.

Hope that is of help to people.

I am also a York alumnus who lives near the university. I didn't get an email but possibly not on the right lists! H works for the university and said that this does happen (definitely happened last year) and that it is due to the fact that some people won't turn up, or will drop out quite soon after the year starts. So hopefully the situation won't be too bad.

My DS and his GF are going to York St Peters and I know on its Facebook page there have been lots of kids desperate for accom. Luckily we managed to get them a tiny (and I mean tiny!) studio flat

I mean York St Johns! Blush

I got the email too. I think it may be (at least partly) due to the fact that they haven't finished renovating Halifax College. This happens every bloody year with one of the halls (at least since I started there 5 years ago.) They say the work will be done and then it blatently isn't. Not to mention having to find a bridge open so you can cross the lake.

The students do know - many are still waiting to find out what 'centrally allocated accommodation' actually means.

I'm a York alumni and my own DD is about to start there. But its not any different in dozens of other unis right now - its the way it works out most years - too many students for the places taken up.
